Took me a little figuring out too... Mike, try Comanche Club Image Hosting next time, I think you'll find much better results. The MJ looks good, and not really all that rusty (underside a different story?) I'll be getting to work on mine eventually, Stuff keeps coming up that gets in the way, and I have to stop being so damn lazy... Good luck on the MJ build, and eventually, we will wheel the MJ's together, although, I'm betting yours will be first out there.

get Ho bottomend, take renix head to machine shop. Drop the $200 it's gonna cost at the machine shop for them to grind it flat, put new valve guides and such in. Put rebuilt renix head on good bottom end, voila, cheap and easy rebuild. all your renix stuff will work if you use the renix head and manifolds. Just no knock sensor, unless you drill and tap a shiny new hole for it. -
About the plates, mine has them, it's just not moving right now. I work on my projects in their order of priority/budget. I also do most of the work on my sister's WJ and YJ, so that makes less time for me... and yea, I do a good amount of net surfing, but my hands always carry the traces of actual work. As for the falreside, did you notice I said "natural"? As in mother nature doing what she does best to metal, oxidizing/corroding it? Anyways, last I saw that red MJ of yours, it was cold, and salty out, not to mention, dark, so it looks way different. Sorry about that Mike, as well as everyone else, But we can return to your regular programming now. Make the camera like you! Words don't do the justice!

4.0 Stroker engine controls
rockhardzj replied to cherokee's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have the entire electrical harness, and ECU out of my old 93 XJ, it was a 5spd, but should be easy to adapt (I think there is a tranny add-in harness???), but I'm not sure if the ecu would need to be reprogrammed, or swapped completely. You know how to get a hold of me. -
But road rage points are the best when you hit stuff! lol j/k of course. haha, i'm in enough legal troubles right now...one bad year full of dumb decisions for me. luckily it's not a permanent damper on my life, but right now, I can't afford any police contact...period A few tips to help you out. Here, in NYS, the state troopers have the "trooper's friends" program, its like five or ten bucks a year, and you get a new windshield sticker every year. Cops see tha, and keep going, they will give you leeway. Look into a similar program for your state. Also, giving a small wave at them doesnt hurt either. I have actually gotten out of getting a ticket by this the officer pulled me over after i had waved as I was going 10mph over, and he just told me to slow down, and said i seemed like a nice guy cause I waved, and he decided to not give me a ticket. Beleive it or not, little stuff like that can be the determination between ticket or no ticket.

I have no clue of the worth of a drivetrain-less, non-rolling tj... Gotta still be fairly good as a whole like that, parting it out would net more cash. I'm sure my mom would love me if I brought it home :D At least I do have axles I could stuff under it to make it look complete, and some plates to keep neighbors from bitching till I decided what direction to go with it... Hmmm................ Texas is just really far for me, from here in NY, to my dad's house in FL is a hell of a drive enough, add in the extra fuel for the weight of a trailer and a boneless TJ, and milage hits the $#!& pretty quick. My assumption is since I know of several 2003+TJ's, non-rubi's go for like 7-13k. Yours would not have the engine, electrical, tranny, tcase, axles, tires, and a few other small things, I would say like $1800-$2100 would be a pretty good asking price, Being that if you sell it to somebody who wants to build a nice trail rig, half their work is done (taking all the underpowered, and lower strength stuff out), you could probably fetch like $2300-$2500, if it comes with a title, which I assume it does. Selling it without axles and drivetraion components would allow somebody to have the vehicle body they want, with say a cummins 12 valve engine under the hood tossing out some high torque through a purpose built tranny to some custom built currie axles on some 38" super swmpers or something. The skin of your TJ could leave endless possibilities to the next owner, without him (or her) feeling guilty of terrorizing a perfectly good vehicle.

Opinions on motor options
rockhardzj replied to fendermb4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Doing that right now  Just when you think you have everything you find something else you need :headpop: Charles Well, lucky me then...98 4.0L, got the tranny, got the wiring, dash, everything. I'll be tossing in new engine/tranny mounts, and swapping to all synthetic fluids, and new filters, hoses, and thats about it. -
He has (maybe had?) a red one with so much rust on the bed sides, that there was more left to the inner fenders, and it might as well have been called a "natural flareside bed"!
-
Wildman has you beat, you have nothing on him!
-
How bad would the MJ look if it had no interior panels in it? Just the seats, dash, belts, consoles, maybe headliner and the panels that go over the doors... The old K.I.S.S. saying (keep it simple, stupid).
-
I will give you $500 for it :D I'd pay more than that! Besides, my use for it would be to get the AEV Brute conversion Kit for it, and build up some nice axles for it, if I got the whole thing... Otherwise, the hood and grill would be used for a buggy...
-
Hey Mike, glad to see you made it over! Thought that name looked familiar. Wheres the pictures at?

I know where a '98 4.0 that needs a little lower end TLC can be had for about $150... :D -
Price?Like I really need another project, but if the price is right, and all that good stuff, I'd probably be interested... Or, if you'd be parting it out, consider the hood and grill sold.

You will want to look into upgrading the front shafts, especially the stub shafts. My buddy twisted the ujoint end from the threaded end, just doing some light offroading. I had to bring him one of my several spares so he could get home. Granted, his Rubi was wheeled pretty hard previous to that (6-7' jump and bent the front axle). He just got I think alloy usa shafts. The thing is, the inner shafts are 44 shafts, the outers are 30's, meaning a weaker weak link. He also upgraded the hubs to Timken ones.

How the EFF did you find such a perfect MJ??? Mine needs to be fixed, although the LWB I'm looking at looks to be mint. Looks like that one must be one that sat in a storage shed since it was bought...
-
For a little inspiration, check these pictures. They are what my buddy is building for his girlfriend's Chevy Tracker, and it will be her DD.HERE! It's overkill, for sure, but I doubt her tracker will go snap anytime soon.
-
I got my eyes set on another MJ, a LWB one. But I don't want to buy it right now, if I have to, It will be sitting out at the farm for a bit till I finnish the first. Plans for another would make a pretty wild ride..

The 98 I just stripped had slightly more damage (folded pinch weld where the wheelwell meets the rest of the unibody) It was a 40mph hit, and only took out the header, bumper, and fender. Radiator was installed i guess like 2-3 months prior to the accident, and it is in perfect shape, noleaks or anything, still had a the full amount of antifreeze. he windshield washer tank was fine, however, the motor that is lower was clipped from the accident. The other damage waas all front axle damage, however, it pushed the driveshaft back hard enough that the 231 got cracked in half and the tranny tweaked enough to bust the tailhousing, and strip the tranny's oil pump shaft. All in all, I would say that the XJ took the hit pretty well, considering there was no sturctural damage.

Hold that camera more still! Good catch(es).

Advice on a Welder
rockhardzj replied to JeeperjohnfromPA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yea, Been a while since I first learned all the names, The MIG welder without the IG part is just a "wire welder", nothing special, but not good for anything more than doing small hobbys that require more than soldering, but less than good welds (those expensive RC car shassis, I guess...) I should add in the point that, I paid 300 bucks used for my hobart 135, at the welding store. It even came with a 3yr warranty from the welding shop to cover any parts that decide to poop the bed. I have a good 45+hrs on it. My Hobart 120 cost me shipping from my dad, as he didnt have a use for it anymore. Both are 120V welders, and I will be upgrading eventually, but so far, they have done the job for me, without complaints, or hassles of any sort. -
Here's a truly heartwarming story about the bond formed between a little 5-year-old girl and some construction workers that makes you believe that we CAN make a difference when we give a child the gift of our time. A young family moved into a house next door to a vacant lot. One day a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family's 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the workers. Eventually the construction crew, all of them gems-in-the-rough, more or less adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week they even presented her with a pay envelope containing a couple of dollars. The little girl took this home to her mother who said all the appropriate words of admiration and suggested that they take the two dollar "pay" she had received to the bank the next day to start a savings account. When they got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her very own pay check at such a young age. The little girl proudly replied, "I worked last week with the crew building the house next door to us. "My goodness gracious," said the teller, "and will you be working on the house again this week, too?" The little girl replied, "I will if those a$$holes at Home Depot ever deliver the f-u-c-k-i-n-g sheetrock..."
