Project CRD MJ is born:
mfpdm replied to Sir Sam's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Looks like you've made some good progress and got some good deals. It's good to see someone else uses those little moving dollies. I've good about 4 or 5 of them now holding a couple of axles, tranny, 2.5 motor and tranny, and the 242 for the MJ. :D Best $10 little helper you can have. -
Upgrading the 'new' MJ's interior
mfpdm replied to XJs4Ever's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I'd say its do-able. I was lookin at these buckets when I was drilling out the rivets to attach the buckets to the bench framework and it looks like the fabric peels off. I was wondering cuz I was thinkin of machine washing them but changed my mind. The washer probly eat them so I used a pressure washer on them and that worked great. Yes it can be done and I remember someone on here saying they had done it. When I changed mine this week, I did pull the 4dr seat cover and put it on the MJ seat. There is less material on them where they come together. Again doable, but I don't think they would hold up nearly as well. So I just put them back on the frames they came off of. I don't have a center console so getting behind them is not bad. And yes you can throw them in the washing machine if they are in good condition. -

I like it. Lets me know how ours will look one day. How did you end up fixing the side piece on the seat back? -
Upgrading the 'new' MJ's interior
mfpdm replied to XJs4Ever's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
:agree: I did the same, found the o so hard to find black interior and jumped on it. I'm going to keep the short console just to help with the non-tilting buckets problem. -
Got the dash swapped today. PITA but its done. Maroon one out. Black one in. I have to do a little bit more to the details of the dash, but it's done for now. Will get the rest of the black pieces sooner or later. I used the a-pillar pieces out of the XJ as well. Just have to trim about four inchs off of them and they're just like MJ's. I painted the column and somewhere I have a black horn button. Just have to find it. Pieces that are cut of the a-pillars.

Amen brother! I would have at least five others that I've seen in the last couple of weeks. Past up a 60's Jeepster Commando for $500 this past week. Had no rust and was complete. The guy just took it apart to restore and didn't have time or money to finish.

Nope, neither leaked. Did take a good chip of powder coating off the rear bumper when I dropped the axle on it. I've since pick up a cargo liner for the rear but like was said earlier, that carpet is really not worth a whole lot. Back to the topic. After looking at the listing, I'm a little courious about his claimed gas milage. The 4 bangers came with 28 or 29 inch tires and he is running 31's. It didn't mention anything about re-gearing. True his rpm's are lower with the bigger tires, but the increased mass should be dogging that 4cyl out thus making it work harder and use more gas. Just rolling hills would make it hard to maintain highway speeds. I think I'm with a few others, if you want more room for the family, get an XJ with a 4cyl. I've been looking for one and have seen plenty of mid to upper 90's for less than 2-3k. Remember, kids grow up and that back seat is small. I got rid of a VW Jetta for that reason. Kid out grew the rear seat leg room.

It's funny how that happens once you have one. I've even looked for the third. The addiction is worst than crack.

I've had pretty good luck with CL for the most part, but I've had a couple of times where they wouldn't get back with me. I've got both MJ's from there. We have had some people get robbed here. Someone would show up about a listing and get held up for their cash.
-
Well, have you decided yet? Forgot about this pic, but if your worried about hauling space, it's what you make of it.
-
Yep, that be the one. Took me like an hour to finally decide to get it, then about two more to get it all pulled. Passenger side was fun because the door would not open. I'm out there every weekend, so if I find another, I'll shoot you a line. And by the way, it's half off everything this weekend, 18-20 July. I really hate those things. Will yank it out when I get an overhead console for it.

I cleaned up all the black interior pieces today and put some of them in. Didn't like the way the dash pad looked so I'm holding off on it until I decide on what to do with it. Anyway here's some pic's. The seats and door panels cleaned up better than expected. I'm thinking that I'll put what I have in and vinyl die the rest. Once the other project is done, I'll pull the carpet and die it black.

Bucket Seat "Skins" - Can you Wash em?
mfpdm replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It was 90 something here and yes they dried very fast. I used purple power and a medium brislte brush on the vinyl. Just have to be careful with the purple p, because it's strong and may hurt some colors. He's a pic of the after and in the truck. -
You'll spend more money on the TJ than you probably would on the MJ. What kind of trade in value are they willing to give and will that really make that much difference in the payment. On the other hand, if your going to get a TJ, at least go for an 03-06 Rubi. You can save the money you would spend on the 98. The Rubi stock is very capable off road. Like mjeff87 said, look in the sig line. Keep the MJ, go find a junker for a few hundred bucks, then trade that in and demand 2-3K for it, and buy the TJ.

How do you know if your track bar is worn?
mfpdm replied to mknherhappy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's what mine looked like that went out last weekend. You can see the hole got elongated, thus causing it to work itself back and forth until failure. Was lucky enough that I heard the popping noises coming from it when my son drove up and turned. Knew something was bad. -

It's the gray one! j/k You so inspired me about the whole washing the seats thing that I stayed home form work today and did the black set I just got from the jy. A couple of tips for the rest out there. If your going to put them in the machine, vacuum them first as this will save a lot of sand from getting into the wife's washing machine. Also the washing machine will do hardly nothing to the vinyl. Scrub it down after you vacuum them and then throw them in the machine. Oh yeah, also make sure you take out all those little metal rods. :D  -
Yep, I'm wondering about them as well. The thing that really bothers me is that this seems to be a growing pattern with large companies being bought up by an overseas company. Yeah they may not change anything but the company profits are not staying in the good old USA. It's just sad that the all mighty dollar is worth more than American Pride.

Project: Getting the paint on before the paint goes bad...
mfpdm replied to Pete M's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
You could put a block of wood in there to hold the shape and then use a ball pein hammer to tap the lip back into place. Might have to heat it up a little, but if you do use heat, place a piece of metal on the inside with the wood to prevent a fire. Once it's back flat, use a washer to help spread the load of the bolt and keep it centered in the hole. Just a suggestion. -
It's gone. I had been working with the guy to find out a few things on it. I went out of town for the day and he dropped the price down to $500 and sold it. If you look at the pic's though, he claimed it was an 86 with a 4.0 jasper. Yeah it's doable but the truck had the pioneer stripping which was not an option in 86. There were a few more things that I saw that made me believe it wasn't what it appeared to be so I'm kinda glad I didn't go get it. He deleted all the other post with the exception on the originals. That's the first time I've noticed it. Well it's not a ghost, however it is another Heavenly Being, my wife. She was standing beside me when I took the pic and I caught the reflection in the glass.

Well, I ran into an 87 dakota at the JY this weekend and it looks like what you had in the other thread. I did measure it and the actual lens (red part) is the same size as the MJ. Don't know if it could be separated from the trim piece, but it doesn't look like it.

MJ#757 ..it's an 87...no, it's a 95, no, it's a...97+?
mfpdm replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I was referring to myself as the one being overly anal. :D I can't get a bolt on without planning what color to paint it and how many turns it should have. Like the stance with the 33's. If I remember right that's going to be a 6in lift? I hope so because if it's like 4.5in, I'm going to have to reconsider the 31's on ours. -
I've been toying with the idea of getting a Macbook. I've been a dos and windows guy since the beginning so I figured what the heck. Plus, graphic's and multimedia are what they are designed around and that's more to me than office apps. Just a thought.

All that room to work and help. I hate you Pat. J/K :D I can't walk completely around mine in the garage. To much stuff in the way. I wish I could work at your speed, and be overly anal about the details. This is like number 5 or so since I started our build. Looking good. What size tire are you using? -
The frame and the prone to rust badly items got POR-15 products. everything else is getting degreased, blasted or wire wheeled, then 2 to 3 coats of primer, then 2 to 3 coats of semi-gloss. Number of coats depends on how much abuse the part will take. I don't expect it to never rust or get dirty, but I'd like it to last a little while. :D Far as who's next, the garage will be closed after this for a little while to catch up on the honey do's.

I found a few things this weekend in the JY for the Mild build that I couldn't pass up. Going black. No rips or tears just dirty. Would have worked on cleaning it up but between the Wild build and then the unexpected track bar going south on this one. Son pulled into the circle and all I heard was pop pop as he circle round. Knew something was bad. Pulled the dust cap off and that's what fell out, Dust. Had to use a pickle fork to hold pressure on it because the nut and stud just would spin together. Pulled out the 2K TJ's old track bar and low and behold, their the same size. :clapping: Will work on the interior as time allows. I'm in the market for a set of black b-pillars, the behind the seat stuff, and a short console. :D
