  1. ... correct. except that you didn't mention that he cannot run any H.O. BUT a 97+ with the 97+ wiring. it will not work...no way, no how.
  2. agree 100%
  3. same here. 96 and older no sniffer test :D originally when the state found out I've got a 96 camaro motor in the 3800 they wanted to do an inspection and sniffer test...then that law passed :D they're trying to make us pass our 96 cutlass supreme though
  4. lol...lucky me, I do have headrests....
  5. I have an 88 4-cyl with an AX4 tranny that has an internal slave. I'm sure the AX5 was the same setup. yes, but the only difference between the internal and external bearing retainer plate is that it's got a sleeve on it that covers the input shaft about 3" and allows the throwout bearing to slide on it. OP leave the external slave assembly and set it up for external....you will be WAAAAY happier to replace it when it fails, than having to yank your trans to do it.
  6. lol...and that is understandable. I wasn't directing that as you...merely making a point reguarding those rednecks who think chain is the only way to make a recovery. sadly they're also the guys drinking and driving out on the pipeline here in WI while they wheel
  7. I am so glad I live in a place without inspections and without emissions. agreed. I got pulled over by an inspection trooper however just this last year with my 87. couldn't find any height spec measurements on a comanche so I got off free :D
  8. chains breaking = unloading tension = flying metal. this can go backwards, sideways, upwards, downwards...but no matter where it goes it is a threat to life when it breaks. I've watched youtube vids where chains break for no reason and go straight through a window narrowly missing the person inside. there are horror storys of them breaking and killing people. a strap breaks it unloads but doesn't go flying everywhere unless the tow point broke off with it (weighs down the end and goes flying). it is not a hazard to life as much as a chain is. pretty much...if you've got a chain as your primary recovery, YOU ARE NOT WHEELING WITH ME. I steer clear of it, because I value my life and that of others.
  9. why don't you use the external slave cylinder. because your internal front cover is a different size. it won't bolt on Why not? I have an 86 External Retainer bolted onto a 93 AX-5. IIRC the only thing ever changed in the AX-5 was the size of the input bearing. oh. perhaps I confused the ax5 and ax15 bearing retainers?
  10. would it be a problem if you have a cherokee with 4.5" to run 6" shocks? they're out of the 4.5" shocks and my friend jake wants these but just wants to know if it will be a bad idea to run 6.5". he's not worried about over-extension on them as he can put limiting straps on. (p.s. I ordered all cherokee 6" monotube xtreme travels about 10 min. ago. I will re-work my rear mounts as needed to make these work, and I'm gonna put some 2" BPE's on the front so I can safely run the front ones with 6.5"-7" suspension)
  11. the gasket is installed on the windshield BEFORE the windshield is glued down to the vehicle. the gasket ensures that the windshield stays in the vehicle in case of the airbag deploying. this applys pressure to the air bag and keeps it in front of you...rather than going through the windshield and allowing you to pretty much impale yourself on the steering wheel. It's a great upgrade. I just wanted to set straight that it IS for safety as well. -Pat
  12. why don't you use the external slave cylinder. because your internal front cover is a different size. it won't bolt on
  13. I pronounce it like it's spelled... Moo (like a cow) with a g at the end, but not a "gah" sound. just Moo-g why are we discussing moog pronunciation lol :clapping: :dunno:
  14. BADASS! too bad you guys don't get snow down there...his feet will be awfully warm driving that thing :rotf:
  15. that method works too. It's sometimes easier though to just pull the clevis pin, toss the strap through clevis, and put it on the reciever (which is inserted into...well, the reciever lol)
  16. Thanks...I didn't get so far as to pull the tank tonite...having some issues with my dad's diesel MJ so I pulled it in the shop and started pulling the timing cover got the crank timing pin keyed in and will hopefully get everything lined up to replace the timing belt tomorrow, and put the new mechanical fuel pump on it. hate that stupid truck...we need to finish the new motor for it (stupid renault) :headpop: anyways, he's driving the 87 rest of the week and I'll get to work on it this weekend.
  17. hasn't happened yet haha. I've got the plasma cutter out now :D removing the gas tank tonite, and relocating it to the bed. only gonna drop about 2" of it through the bed, and gonna chop up the factory skid and weld it in underneath the gas tank to protect from the driveshaft. also will have to remount the e-brake splitter bracket onto the skid plate. I'm cutting the rear of the bed floor as well, to make some storage where the spare tire used to be. the bottom of the storage will be welded to the bottom of the frame and sealed with RTV, and the floor will remain stock height but in that section will hinge up as a toolbox lid. pull out drawers will be on either side of the floor storage for tools and spare axleshafts to go in. the floor storage is just for recovery gear. gas tank going in front of bed, air tank behind that, spare tire on top of both. I'll build a cover for the air tank and gas tank. this is gonna put the filler neck for the gas tank on the passenger side of the bed, inside the bed. one optima red top on either side of the gas tank, with a custom cover. this will still leave plenty of storage :D pics as it happens -Pat
  18. The gasket will fit. The changeover was because of the airbag. The gasket gets glued in and the glass gets glued to it. This keeps the windshied in if you have an accident. x2 on it fitting, but not on the other stuff. The windshield is glued to the body, and the trim is glued to the windshield for aesthetics. The rubber moulding has nothing to do with structural or safety concerns. actually it IS there for safety...when the air bag deploys, it blows OUT and hits the windshield...the widnshield is supposed to absorb the impact and in extreme cases pop out.

    MM's MJ

She is the cousin of one of the moderators on the site that I admin.. She was supposed to be at our annual campout weekend last April, but he ended up having to go to Japan because of his job and couldn't be there so she wouldn't come either. haha, yea? well I've played water polo with Tony Romo (he's from my home town) so there. (but she's hotter...and the girl part is the winner lol)
  20. no way, no how, never. you need 4.0 specific parts
  21. you can rebuild the neutral safety switch if it's an automatic aw4 by removing it cleaning it, repacking it with dialectic grease and putting it back on. -Pat
  22. yes, you open the door and look at the sticker on the inside of the door, or open the hood and look at the sticker on the driver's side firewall. those will tell year. you may have a viable reason to keep the engine, trans, and wiring from your old comanche
  23. there is no point unless you're doing ALOT of custom wiring, or doing a full on 98+ conversion. absolutely NONE of the dash wiring is compatible with any other cherokee or comanche be it high output or renix. the gauges WON'T operate without the 97+ engine computer as they are computer controlled rather than the old style with one wire and a sensor and a gauge. just giving you a heads up. on a side note, I've got a nice, uncracked set of headlight bezels if you need them...one is red, one is black. unsure which side is which color.
  24. Yeah, but we really need to formalize that data bank. Perhaps we need to start a thread in which people can post what year and tranny they have, and what the spline count and length of the shaft is. Mostly we all just sort of vaguely think "21-spline" or "23-spline," and we know that Jeep changed around 1991 (or so) -- except they didn't change the 4-cyl (unless they changed the shaft length), and ... Yeah, a comprehensive compilation of permutations and combinations would be handy for reference. yup. I have no intention of ever messing with tearing ax5's apart again however...so I will not be able to give us an exact year on when they changed the long/short input shaft on the np207
  25. seeing how there are zip ties holding it on, he probably knows that............ :fool: :agree: he asked for input :dunno: :rotf: figured I may as well let him have the full brunt of it lol. :rotfl2:
