Cool Idea! I would like to see some pics of this mod.
-
I am not arguing at all that Jeepco's way is the wrong way to adjust the steering wheel. I was trying to figure out how you could do it at the firewall. I thought I was going stupid for a second there.
-
I checked both the 97 and the 89 Columns when I got home from work. You CAN remove the steering shaft from the steering gear and adjust it that way. But, you can't do it on the upper side of the steering shaft. They are BOTH shaped like a square and they will only go on one way up there. (This is where I was confused, and rightly so) I do not suggest that you use this method but, it can be done.

Long arms have disadvantages too. Unloading while climbing a steep ledge or on a side hill are two of the biggest problems with them. Advantage. They offer a tad more flex than DBs and a little smoother ride. More often than not, flex is going to be limited to your shock length. Which means DBs will flex just as well as LAs. I had RK LAs on my old XJ and they were nice. But lately I have been seeing the advantages of DBs (price) becoming more of a deciding factor.
-
Nope. Most of them have fallen off years ago. It will just take a little longer to warm up in the mornings.

Let me see if I got this right? I know there is no keyed groove in the steering shafts in either of my trucks. Never said there was. I said they "had an indexing groove in them where the lock bolt went threw them". Are you saying that, You remove the lock/jam bolt from the steering shaft. Release the shaft from the steering cloumn. Then turn the steering wheel to where it points straight Then re-install the steering shaft on the column. How do you get the lock/jam bolt back in once you turn the steering cloumn?

The tube allows the engine to perform better until it warms up. Is it needed? Yes and no. If you have emissions testing where you are it can fail a visual inspection because of the tube being gone. You can usually pick a replacement up at most parts houses for a small fee.

I just pulled the steering shafts of both the MJ (89) and the XJ (97) and they both had an indexing groove in them where the lock bolt went threw them. There is no way possible to adjust the steering wheel by removing the steering shaft and turning it. It only goes on one way. This is off topic a little bit. A 97 steering shaft will fit on a 89 steering gear without any modifications.

It had me confused at first. Then I thought back a few years and remembered rebuilding my Trac Loc. -
Locker install problem
shelbyluvv replied to comanche 88's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Trac Lok in a Jeep D44 is called a 2 Pinion Trac Lok. The center or cross pin for the spider gears is called the pinion on a Trac Loc. There are 2 clips in the carrier the holds the pinion in. Step one out of the 88 FSM for the Dana 2 Pinion Trac lock, 1) Using 2 screwdrivers, remove pinion snap rings. Using a brass drift and a hammer, remove pinion shaft from case. The pinion shaft is what is commonly refered to as the cross pin. As you can see the Trac Lok does not use the little bolt through the carrier to hold the cross pin in. -

Posting your items for sale or wanted in Tech threads.

Thank you everyone for the the support. We can give this a try. If the threads turn into a bunch of talk about anything other than tech, (IE- Price, shipping, or anything sales related) the thread will be locked. I will then allow the Godfather (Pete) make the call on weather to re-open it or clean it up. Like hornbrod said, we are volunteers. We are doing the mod duties because we have a love for these old trucks and this board. This is the single greastest wealth of MJ knowledge on the web, PERIOD! I do have a "military" prospective when it comes to the rules. I do not read in gray. I see things as they are written in black and white. Maybe it has something to do with my up bringing? :dunno: I will be as fair and tactful as I can be when giving out warnings. There are a few things that I will earn you a warning. 1. Being disruptive. This is a really relaxed board and it has that friendly feel to it that we all like. 2. Cussing, there is no place for it on the board. I have a 10 year old son who reads the board as much as I do. I am sure others have kids as well. Lets keep it clean. 3. Bashing someone in the classifieds for their asking price. It is not our place to tell them how much their stuff is worth. Kinda like the Jeff Daniels Jeep. If you don't like the price move on or PM them a counter offer. That is about it. Unless you do something totally off the wall. This is a very good club, let's enjoy it. I do have one last request for everyone. If you see something that you do not agree with, as in a rules violation, please report the post. We are not on here 24-7 and we do not catch everything. Again, thank you for your support! Bo -

I think you bought a locker for a open carrier. The LSD carries are different as you have found out. Post the #s off the locker and lets see which one you got. -

It will apply to everyone, sorry. I totally understand where Pete is coming from, as I do with you. It is a suggestion he has asked us to try and keep in check. So I will do as he asks of me. I at one time did not check all the forums. I do now, and I help with what I can. If someone is actively looking for a part I am sure they will check the classifieds. -

Sorry for the delay. I was not ignoring you. I had to get home to measure the distance from my skull to the roof. I am 5' 9" and I have 6" from my head to the headliner sitting in the passenger seat. I used the passenger seat because normally the do not get sat in as much as the drivers seat and tend to be a little taller. Hope that help you.
