  1. Jim: You should've grabbed a few of those Coestoga wagons. Would be neat to compare the ride comfort to a Comanche. My first car was built by a company that started out building conistoga wagons. (Dam phone spell chucker).
  2. So why does this fellow want to sell such a great truck? What is he going to buy that is better? People are stupid. I know what is right and wrong with my Comanche. I have literaly dumped thousands of dollars into fixing it after an accident and having it stolen. then recovered. I know what has been done right to fix the truck. Sometime, down the road, I need to rebuild the transmission and the engine, to get rid or fluid leaks. But when the truck gets used 3-4K miles a year, it is hard to do everything right away. What else can I use to haul 2200 lbs. of cement blocks home from the Home Depot? And haul more than 3000 lbs of back yard waste to the dump? I really love this truck for the work horse it is. And I get to write off the repair costs on my taxes, because it is a work truck. I don't really care about the 13-15 mpg when the truck is working. Just a cost of doing business.
  3. Good question that should be stickied.
  4. San Diego is home for me. Sometimes I stay in Orange County for the weekend. (like last week).
  5. First of all, my 91 lwb has the 23.5 gal gas tank and if I slow down, it is good for more than 500 miles between fillups. (My bladder can not match anything close to that range). But since I own a 96 VW Passat TDI wagon that can travel more than 1000 (that is correct One Thousand) miles on a single tank of diesel, I keep looking for a way to get more miles without a gas stop. To meet that 1000 mile goal I will need a second gas tank. To install a second gas tank, I need to figure out what to do with my spare tire. The most reasonible place to put a second gas tank is in front of the rear bumper where the spare tire resides. That brings up the question of what to do with the spare? Can anyone offer other thoughts? Several solutoins come to mind. But first I seemed to remember a extra long range tank for an 80's F150 truck with the winch for the spare tire traveling thru the rear gas tank. Net result, the spare sat below the 19 gal. gas tank. Can any of your old guys confirm this? Next option would be to mount the spare tire on my front trailer hitch. Not good looking, but it would be cheap. Question is how would it affect/effect the engine cooling temperature? There are some very large fuel tanks in full size late 60's and 70's full size GM cars that had very thin, cut long and wide gas tanks of about 24 plus gallons. One of these tanks could fit in place of the spare tire in most MJ's. A transfer fuel pump could be used to fill the primary fuel tank. Total range could be more than a 1000 miles, but we still would have the bladder range problem.
  6. Would be nice to see the build sheet on the truck. Larger tank was an option, just like a/c, auto trans, etc.
  7. So tell us what was left on that 91 - Sounds like you got it early. I am looking for a 91 column shift cluster. Did the 91 have one??
  8. You are looking at a marketing package only. Nothing special in equipment. Just a color and decal package. Not worth a bucket of spit extra.
  9. Should work fine. As I recall the FORWARD front seat brackets bolt into the same holes on the XJ and MJ.
  10. Time for an update. The truck is running fine and back in San Diego. All the electrial work was done very well in Tijuana. While the truck was in and out of the shop, I manged to gather a few "extra items" for a couple of upgrades. First upgrade was to install a power mirror switch from an Isuzu Rodeo so I could adjust the 97+ power mirrors. Installed it in the left most rocker switch polition. Shop did a nice job on the switch install and fabricating a harness to the Jeep power mirrors. Second upgrade was to install the mirror with two switched map lights from a late 80's GMC. Now it works very well. Third upgrade I did not know about. Last night was the first night time drive since I got the truck back. I went to the store, turned off my lights, but the headlights stayed on. I checked to be sure I turned the lights off, but the headlights were still on with the switch off. Then after about 15 seconds the headlights went off. Same thing happened when I went home. Well, I now have a timer that keeps the headlights on for 15 seconds after I turn the lights out - just like on the 2003 Camry. Saturday I got a set of aluminum wheels and put 4 new 225/75 x 15 tires on the truck yesterday. Still have to install the New b-pillar lights, a radio and upgrade the instrument cluster. But the truck is looking good.
  11. Thanks to all 3 of you for the explainations.
  12. On my Isuzu Rodeo, I can go from 2wd to 4x4 High while driving on the road. But to shift into 4x4 Low, I have to stop and shift into low. Is this the same way "Shift on the Fly" works with the NP 242? Just toying with a 4x4 conversion to a NP 242 AW4 from a 2wd AW4 for the Comanche. I don't drive off road, just looking to use the Comanche as a tow vehicle for my camping trailer for some possible winter use in wetter places than Southern California.
  13. I will take it. Let me know if you take paypal. Let me know with shipping to 92020. See my PM
  14. Bump! All I really need is the face plate for the fuel gauge with the cut out for the auto trans shifter. Somebody must have one. Please let me know!
  15. I will agree with 87Warrior, check your sending unit with an ohm meter. I know the correct resistance levels have been posted, not sure where exactly. If the range is correct, then the rod must have been bent. With an 18 gal tank you should get 250 miles between fillup in town and 300 plus on the highway..
  16. Miles per tank? Without knowiing the size of the tank? Long bed has 23.5 gallon tank, short bet has 18 gallon tank. And you don't know at what tank level the "gas light" comes on. First thing I would do fill the truck with gas, write down what the odometer reading was, i.e. 190612 miles. Second, drive your truck like normal and make some notes as to what "normal" is for you. Third, when the "gas light" goes on, write down the odometer reading is. i.e. 190802 Fourth, fill the truck with gas. Note how much gas you put in the truck and again write down your odometer reading, i.e. 190818 miles and 15.100 gallons Now, do the math. In my example, you drove 206 miles on 15.1 gallons of gas for 13.64 mpg. Using that mpg figure, when the light went on you had burned 14 gallons of gas and if you have a normal 18 gal short bed tank, you still had 4 gallons of gas in your tank. Here is a thread listing how many miles per tank: http://comancheclub.com/topic/29859-whats-the-most-miles-you-got-from-a-full-tank/?do=findComment&comment=304222
  17. Take a good long read on this site: http://www.sounddead...i-bin/index.cgi Years ago, before this fellow started selling sound insulation he did tests of various sound deadening materials, including roofing material. Roofing material turned out terrible. DynaMat was pricy and not the best stuff. I would use the site for education and then look for local sources. But I live in San Diego and not far from Los Angeles, so I can find just about anything on any given Saturday or Sunday. In a "rural" area buying specialty items is much more difficult unless you do mail order. Here is another interesting source for sound deadening information that does not sell anything: http://www.myturbodi...roofing-car.htm Not for a Comanche, but good information and pictures. Just found this thread for what it may be worth: http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/topic/53026-second-skin-vs-sound-deadener-showdown/
  18. Looking for a large fuel gauge for my column shifter. Year doesn't matter. Just looking to use it as pattern. I have a full gauge cluster to trade if you like. I will also pay if you do not need a full cluster. Thanks,
  19. I do not like the shortened short box. Like the idea of starting with a 2 door xj for an extended cab.
  20. I went back to the yard this morning but someone else got the visor and the cargo light before me. Just reminds me when I see something, I need to fougrab it when I see it. I also got the cable from the automatic transmission speed sensor. This should be the last of the electrical items I need to repair because of the theft damage to the truck That said, I found a 91 Cherokee Wagoneer just this morning. I got the jack, lug nut wrench and the crank for the jack. Also stolen with the rest of the truck. May go back and grab the front grill and quad lights from the Wagoneer on Sunday (If I get permission). What else do I need to get to install it on the truck?
  21. Sorry to sound like a chump, but how much difference is ther than a $750 YJ and a $750 XJ?? Or a $500 XJ and a $600 YJ? Spend the extra $100-250 on the YJ, when something goes wrong, then you fix it. The YJ may be stronger than you think.
  22. What years of the Grand Cherokee?? Is this the same years as the XJ? I see lots of mid 90's Grands in the local junk yards, not so many late XJ's
  23. Take a look at this thread: http://comancheclub.com/topic/28450-gas-tank-relocation/page__hl__tanks It may give you some ideas.
  24. You want to use the search function. This has been discussed several times and I seem to recall, has been done once or twice (at least). I have toyed with it off and on over the last 5 years. The question I keep going back to is why would I do it? My 91 long bed has a 23.5 gal tank and I can milk 23 mpg out of it so that gives me a highway range of 500 plus miles. (My Passat diesel has a highway range of more than 1000 miles - WAY more range than my bladder). Simplest place to put a second tank is in the bed. Use a tool box/transfer tank combination. No relocation of the spare tire required. Next option is to find another place for your spare tire and locate a second tank where the spare used to reside. Easier on a short bed than a long bed - because of the big X brace under the long bed. But I could add a 20 gal or so second tank even to my long bed. Other option to look at is a custom built tank - think about going over the drive shaft. Google "long ranger tanks" in Australia for some illustrations. Then come back and tell me "WHY".
  25. Anyone seen another visor maker than Lund? Saw one recently I did not think was Lund, but I have never seen a Lund in person, so I do not know. This visor seemed to be like a "J" on edge, with the hook of the J over the windshield, also had a passage for air flow under part of the visor. Please share your knowledge. Thanks,
