Noticed some squeaking just started in the last 5 days. Guess I need to look at the balancer also. Both the water pump and the belt are a few months old.

Don, You and I were in Jr. High when the first Ferrari California come out. The "California" name tag has been used by a number of automakers before. The geographic names never bothered me. I don't like the ships named Reagan, Ford, Carter, Bush, etc. Funny thing the Kennedy never bugged me and Lincoln and Washington are old enough that it doesn't bug me.. I always liked ship names like Midway, Enterprise, Wasp, Ranger, etc. Things like "Redskins", "Indians", "Navajo", "Kiowa", Apache, etc never bothered me. Nor did the old Studebaker "Scotsman" name for their cheapest truck ever bother this guy who was born in Scotland. Guess I am just totally, insensitive.

Great View! You will have a lot of fun building out the inside of the house. The kitchen will be a fun project all by its self. As for the garage/shop, I always thought a shop/garage that you could drive thru made for a lot of flexibility. But never did have one.

Axel and spring pack identification?
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Tend to agree, Don. But it will be a while. After the engine transplant is finished, running properly and the truck is registered in California. Will be very happy if I get it back home and registered by the end of September of this year! Next will be an upgraded turbocharger and retune for around 340 lb/ft torque. Then maybe time for a new axle and spring pack. -
Good to chat with you today. Nice looking project that will not need a whole lot of work, sure hope you stick with it! Post up the pictures here and keep us updated on the progress - no matter how slow. You are puttering away at it and making good progress! You might also ask around here for a lead on another truck to do a 5.3 conversion on. Might take a little while, but you can find a good truck to do the 5.3 swap on for a good price. Just let the Club members know what you are looking for. Again, thanks for talking and for the pictures.

Lots of guys here will buy it "for the right price". Problem is what you think as a seller is the "right price" will not be close to what the buyers here think of as the "right price". You have an incomplete project that you will not complete. Even if you do finish the project, it will cost you way more than you can ever sell the truck. That is just the nature of our "old car" hobby. Also, You put 3 different "for sale" posts in 3 different wrong forums, all with no price listed. Per club rules you have to post an asking price AND someone joining the club SIMPLY to post a for sale ad is NOT COOL. Club rules require 10 decent posts before you post a for sale ad. But you know that and decided to spam the board anyway. Lastly, for your own market research. I purchased a 1986 factory MJ diesel for a very good price as a buyer last July. If you want to know more...please send me a p.m.

Axel and spring pack identification?
johnj92131 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I actually count 5 leafs on the drivers side and 6 leafs on the passenger side. It may just be the point of view of the camera, not sure. I have another picture of each spring pack to look at taken from the front side of the rear axle to look at. The truck is in Michigan and I am in San Diego. So I have to rely on pictures. Asked Jeep for a build sheet, but was told it was too old to get the factory build sheet. The VIN on the truck decodes to a standard payload, not the metric ton payload (the VIN on my 91 does decode into a BigTon/MetricTon payload). Question: How many leafs would the standard payload 1986 spring pack have? Guess I can ask Automan and a couple of other diesel owners here. -
86 Diesel MJ to VW TDI conversion

More pictures added March 7 to first couple of posts. -
Picture below is the 86 diesel MJ. To me, the axle looks like a dana 35 and the leaf spring pack seems to have 5 leafs which means "metric ton/big ton" package to me. Can any of you tell me more about this picture? Thanks

Automan, Drop the url in where? When I drop the url in on the picture icon, I get a message that this file extension is not supported. https://youtu.be/Gkyb3PRWwbk

Alexia's 1987 To 1997 Comanche

Don Is their a supercharged PentaStar project in the future? -
He made a copy of the Drawtite hitch. I have a bumper Krusty built for me. His weld quality is EXCELLENT. If I did not have an original Drawtite hitch already, I would buy his hitch in a second and use it without any hesitation. Honestly, his hitch is a bargain at the price. There are no quality short cuts. The steel he uses for the hitch brackets is actually thicker than the Drawtite hitch. I actually have a set of his hitch brackets and compared them to the Drawtite hitch brackets. Lastly, I suggest you powder coat the hitch. I sand blasted, primed and painted the bumper he made for me. Frankly, baked on powder coating will last longer and not cost anything more than the quality primer and paints I used.

703 injectors for 92 4 liter?
johnj92131 replied to 1989 comanche mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Your 92 is designed by the factory to run properly at 32-39 psi. Your 97 is designed to run properly at 49 psi Do not make the mistake of thinking more pressure is better. Or the mistake of taking one part from column "A" and another from column "B" then expect it to work properly. -
Don't forget to check the "Amazon Warehouse Deals" when looking for a parts bargain. Recently I got a Bosch fuel pump for the Comanche for just $30. 1 or 2 others here scored the same bargain deal. Last summer I got a Bosch Oxygen sensor for $20 in another warehouse deal. And right here on the Comanche Club is a great place to find parts also. Lots of members here are willing to help out by sharing their own personal parts stash with another member in need for a very reasonable price and quick shipping!

Don't forget to check Ebay also if you have a part number. Example: I just got a Walker 47605 exhaust pipe for Comanche with 7 ft bed for less than half RockAuto's delivered price. RockAuto: $29.79 Plus Shipping of $58.99 Total $88.78 Amazon from Auto Parts USA $47.60 with free shipping Amazon from Pep Boys $48.99 with free shipping Ebay from Pep Boys $44.09 with free shipping

Mitsubishi J54 diesel Jeep
johnj92131 replied to thejim42's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
26 year old cars can be imported with out having to be Federalized in the U.S. Canada has a 15 year waiting period. The 86 diesel MJ I got from Canada it was 30 years old, so it would have been OK to import, per customs. But the truck was built in the U.S. anyway, so no issue either way. -
I like this answer. Everything you need for a fire. Heat, fuel, air.
-
Looks like an electrical short under the instrument cluster area to me. See how melted the lower dash area plastic is next to the steering column? What high current wires are in that area? The smoke from burning/melting plastic is all over the interior of that truck and the only heat on the roof is just over the dashboard.

The Corvair has a real, original 25,000 miles on it! Carbs don't look like they have ever been taken off or opened up. Original floats were metal, but with current crap for gas, who knows what kind of shape the floats, etc are in. Also, want to put off opening the carbs if possible for as long as possible.

Just checked my January, 1988 Mopar Jeep parts book. It list the same right and left part numbers for the A pillar trim for both the Cherokee and the Comanche. Minuit, think you are talking about the 97+ trim being different from the 85-96 A pillar trim?
-
Yeah i want those and the A pillar ones as well. are those interchangeable with cherokee ones? Ive got my hands on a 2000 cherokee and was thinking of switching the interiors over...That being said i have a tan interior now which is in fantastic shape and seeing the prices of those panels my brain is saying "Hell yeah grab those things and lets get wrenching!!" but then my wallet is saying "Remember we are trying to do this on a budget..." If the stinkin JY would stay open longer i would have more time to go through the yard and try to find a MJ. I find that alot of them have tan/burgandy interiors. We all know the Cherokee doors fit the Comanche, so it is reasonable that the factory used exactly the same part number on both the Cherokee and the Comanche for the A pillar trim. Guess we will have to look in the parts book to verify an exact match.
-
Those exact panels have been on eBay for months. In the meantime I've sold all sorts of stuff Jeep and non-Jeep here and elsewhere. There's no cashing in going on when stuff just sits waiting for a sucker to come by. And they will be there next year also. You have to admit, it is cheaper to list your Junk Yard Treasure for a Kings Ransom than to buy a couple of Lottery Tickets every week

Sounds to me that you need a UniSyn . Gotta make sure all 4 carbs are in sync both at idle and a bit above. I've never needed anything more to tune multiple carbs. Hi Cruiser, I have had a UniSyn since the late 1960's. Used it first to set up the dual carbs on my 63 Sunbeam Alpine in 1967/68. Later used it for all the Corvair multiple carbs I had. The UniSyn is a great tool. Don, My hearing is a problem for using the hose as a tuning tool. The hose used to work very well on the Corvair Rochester carbs. Add the UniSyn, then properly adjust the linkage as you say. End result was a very smooth running engine with either 2 carbs or 4 carbs. Guess I am trying to at least move into the early 1990's with an O2 sensor!
