Definitely prefer earthquakes here too! Glad to hear you are safe Don.

Check to see how wide that 3.6 is first. Then measure the MJ engine compartment width.

Comanche power/towing
johnj92131 replied to SatiricalHen's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hen, I suspect that your Comanche engine has a problem if the 4.0 is underperforimg a 2.5 XJ in the same or near same towing situation. Also the issues with running in 5th gear tell me some thing is not right with your engine. My sister-in-laws 4.0 91 XJ had a 5 speed and 3.07 and it would tow a boat with no big issues. -
Sucks that the transmission shop closed. Suppose the failed rebuild on your truck tells us why they closed. That 2017 Ram 3500 looks like a real bargain for $41K. It is hard to get a half ton truck for less than $40K.

Good to see you back! Hope to see more from you. JJ

The harness upgrade should be the first thing you do. It is inexpensive and will improve your stock lights. SilverStar lamps are an improvement over stock at a modest cost. Their life span is a bit shorter than stock lights. I have a set of TurckLites on my 91 Comanche and they are really excellent. Light pattern is great and very well controlled. Not something you get in cheap LED kits. Also have a set of Hella Ecodes to install in the 86 TDI Comanche and a relay harness as well. The E-Codes will have an excellent, well controlled light pattern.

I have owned 2 different Isuzu Rodeos. Don't forget to look at Honda Passports of the same years. They are the same truck. First was a 1998 with V6, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed transmission. Factory rear end was 4.30 - Dana 44 Second was a 2001 with V6, 4 x 4, automatic trans. Factory gearing was 4.10 - Dana 44 front and rear. Both trucks have/had 6 bolt wheels and disk brakes on both front and rear Rear track was 1 inch narrower than the Comanche rear track. Links to some Isuzu forums below: http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewforum.php?f=25&sid=70607802c1a86e7669e85b00d536c775 http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/51-isuzu/ This thread has specific information installing a standard 5.13 gear set in the 98+ Rodeo rear end: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/isuzu/603807-definative-tech-thread-1998-isuzu-rear-dana-44-axle.html Hope this helps someone.

I watch the video with interest. No problems following it. 720P did not bother me at all. It kept my interest all the way to the end. Quite sure I will get even more out of it the second time I watch it. Also have to say I admire the steady hand with the cutting wheel. Good looking work.

Bo dropped the truck off about 10 a.m. and showed me the 86 only interlock to press so I could get the key out of the ignition switch. Friday I contacted Bo and asked if I could pick up the Comanche on Sunday. Bo sent me a text saying he was picking up a shell for his Dodge Saturday less than 10 miles away from me. How about I pay for the Uhaul trailer and he drops my Comanche at my house? You really have love all the people on these car club forums who just simply help other forum members. Makes for a great community. My thanks to Brandon, Bo, AutoMan, and other Comanche club members who have provided help when needed.e On the TDICLUB, both David Oh and Matt Whitbread freely provided their professional technical expertise. David is a superb, highly experienced, PhD level engineer with years of diesel experience. His guidance in this TDI Comanche project has been fantastic. Matt Whitbread has again shown his excellent craftsmanship on this project. Matt simply does excellent work. Ask Bo and Brandon. My first task now that I have the truck home was to fix a flat front tire. Then take the truck to the AAA to register it on CALIFORNIA. Unfortunately, because the truck was imported from Canada, I have to go to the DMV. My appointment is March 20.

Yes, that is true. But if you want to quantify results from different sound deadeners, you really want accurate before and after sound meter readings. Same thing if you want to know if simple peal and stick over a bare metal floor is better or worse than standard factory underpad and standard carpet. I suspect that the #1 source of noise is the tire tread and the #2 source of noise is old window and door seals. Without actual measurements, we really don't know accurately. So I am ordering the sound meter Minuit linked from Amazon. It is inexpensive at $15 and will give good information I can cross check with Minuit's results.
-
Guys, without a before and after sound meter reading, it just like a butt Dyno. No real way to compare real results
-
My suggestion is to buy a sound meter. Then you can measure where the sounds come from and take action on the largest source first. Someone posted a link to a very reasonablely priced sound meter

Take a bit more time to do the trip than Brandon did.

You really have to watch Las Vegas. Nobody leaves, without paying there!!!

I towed an 86 Comanche from Vancouver Island to upper Michigan in the summer. My 91 Comanche has all factory h.d. towing equipment. My only issue was the cooling system. First because I failed to properly fill the system and get all the air out of the system. Second, for going over the Rocky Mountains with 4000 lbs - the Comanche is marginal. But once in the mid west I had ZERO issues. So get your truck in good shape, use a proper hitch (from krustyballer16) and you will be fine with the little Honda.

Jeep Driver, Thanks. Instructions seem clear!

Any chance of a "how to"???
-
Would love to see the how to on those striker. Or would buy 2 sets if you would like to make them.

"Wilson"???? Your spell checker got it wrong. It is Mt. Whitney.

That Red Comanche looks good in the California sun.

97+ Bucket Seats with Bench Brackets
johnj92131 replied to Comavalanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here is how I did it. I simply used 4 pieces 1/4 x 1 1/2 flat stock to make a frame like a number sign (#). The 2 lengthwise pieces bolted to the front and rear Comanche seat brackets. After I cut off the feet of the 97+ seats, I used the other 2 pieces of flat stock to connect the slider / seat rails side to side on the 97 seats. Now put the seat on top of Comanche brackets. Bolt together. Ok? Send me your email and I will send pictures when I get home from vacation. -
High Output Alternator
johnj92131 replied to kill_burst's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just looked on DIY forum, didn't see one. Know there is a 130+ amp Dodge upgrade. Check Cherokee forum. Cruiser or Don may have a link. Then Please do a DIY write up for us here. -
Used to tow a 4500 lbs comping trailer all over the Western U.S. and Canada with an Isuzu Rodeo. 13.5 mpg, even in the Rockies. I sure hope this Comanche TDI does one heck of a lot better towing than 13/14 mpg.
-
Wow, only 13.5 mpg with the Dodge Diesel??? I got that same number towing on a dolly from Vancouver to Michigan with the 91 Comanche. Does the snow/bad weather kill the mpg?? Looks like the truck is in for its first WARM/Dry night in a while. Good to see you are home safe. Thanks.
