Softening the rear suspension
mike replied to feerocknok's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i never tried this but just guessing you could take 1 leaf out at a time on each side and try that and see if it's any smoother? -
i have an 86 with the 2.5L and it has the oblong one. i'm sure it came that way from the factory as the original owner was an older guy and never did any messing with the truck except normal maintaince.

yea it's the master cyl. i had a dodge dakota do the same thing, i replaced the master cyl. and problem was solved.

i have a bench seat in my parts truck but shipping it to wa from in would kill you. if i was you i'd take the seat out and flip it over and see whats broke. sounds like some springs are either broke or stretched. you could probably fix it with some more wire ran back and forth.

we're about 40-45 miles south of the badlands, just take 41 south out of attica and go to 47 then go east about 7 miles and we're right across from a golf course. saturday would be the best.

i have an 86 , 2.5L , it has an oblong one and there are 4 outlets, 2 on each side so like jeepthing said it might be 2 canisters in 1. the larger size vacum hose goes to the intake manifold, the smaller size hose goes to the heater controls in the dash. not sure if this is the same with all other mj's but thats how it is on my parts truck. also it doesn't have air conditioning so i'm not sure if that effects anything. i can try to get some pics if that'll help.

i know that those things help keep the gas fumes from getting out and redirects it either back to the gas tank or to the engine. i had a line break on another truck i had and it had a strong smell of gas around the engine that i thought was a broken fuel line but it was the cannister line instead, and when i found the break and fixed it i didn't smell gas anymore. as far as removing it and doing something different with the lines i have no idea on that i'm sure someone on here knows what to do. 8)

i'm about 30 miles or so from the state line, and about 10 miles northeast of rockville. right on st. rd. 47 by the montgomery-parke county line. there's a golf course right across the road, very easy to find. as far as parts, i have an 86 2wd, 2.5L, auto, that i'm parting out and still have about %80 of it left. everything is up for offers. let me know what you need and i'll see if i have it.

i have a set on my doner mj, no locks but everything else is there. make me an offer. i'm in indiana also so if you want anything else maybe you can take a drive over here and load up on parts :D .

i replaced the ones on my 87 and it's not too hard, i was lucky and had the code #'s for the locks i put in and was able to go to a locksmith and he made a key with the code #. hardest part is seeing what you have to do to unhook the linkage rod holders, then the lock itself has a spring type clamp holding it in place that you have to pry off then the lock will slide out. if you can get the lock out then take that to a locksmith and he might be able to repair them if you can't get another set of locks.

muffler or straight pipe??
mike replied to 1987MJfreak!'s topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i agree! put on a glasspack, i have one on my truck and it sounds good and flows free. i had a piece of pipe on there before as the muffler rotted off and thats what i replaced it with and it sounded good that way but when it's reved up it sounded like a ricer and it got annoying so i put on a 15" glasspack and it sounds good at any rpm. i have a 4.0 5-speed in my truck also. -
before you tear anything apart try this, i was having the same problem with my e-brake so i took some rust penetrating spray and sprayed it all over where i could get it and worked the pedel up & down a bunch and it loosened it up and now it works. i also sprayed some silicone spray lube after i got it working and it's been fine for a couple months now. sure was easier then taking it all off and fighting it to get it back together.

hey i have a pair of headlight bezels i'll sell ya, from an 86 that i'm parting out, i'll see if i can get a pic.

Bolt locations and Removal of short box
mike replied to nipcat202's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
well it's not easy but if your doing it yourself this will make it easier. i used an engine lift to lift off the bed after i got the bolts removed and gas tank and e-brake bracket and tailight harness all removed. i just tied rope to all 4 corner brackets inside the bed and hooked them to the arm of the engine lift. and the arm for the engine lift was long enough to reach the middle of the bed and it lifted it right up nice and level. -
well if he gets that much then i'm putting mine on there :D just think what all i could do with my other one with that much $ to waste.
-
yea i saw that show also, they need to do one on a comanche :D

Help... it won't start, and I can't figure out why!
mike replied to Boiler74's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
hey boiler, i belive the fuel pick-up is right in the middle, so either nose up or down won't help, have the truck sitting level ( or fuel tank if the truck doesn't sit level) and it should get most of it out. or at least that is what the tank on my blue on is like, the one where you got the flares from, but it has the 4 cyl engine and the tanks probably the same for the 4.0's. too bad these trucks don't have a drain plug on the tanks, that would make it easy. -
how about #2 but with the word COMANCHE across the top in chrome colors, like in my avatar, just a idea.

Help... it won't start, and I can't figure out why!

here's a quick way of seeing if the pump even works, turn the ignition to on and listen for a humming sound coming from the gas tank. should humm for a few seconds a least and then stop. don't turn on the engine when doing this just turn key to on. your guages and lights should come on but not the starter to crank it over. if there is no humming then i bet the pump isn't working for some reason, maybe a wire got jarred lose when you took it off the stands? if there is a humming then i would say the pump works but the fuel might not be getting to the engine. i know the fuel line is metal except for the connector hoses for the filter but i'm sure you have noticed if you accidently crushed it with the jack. also check for any blown fuses. kinda strange why it would start on stands but not after it's back on the ground. -
 well crap i don't know, i'll take 1 of each :D
