This is what was advert. I thought that the engine wouldn't matter. But looking at my pictures, the replacement is a half inch wider in diameter. The bolt holes don't line up. It is missing the notch the fits next to the 4wd lever. (See lower left on the old.) http://www.teamgrandwagoneer.com/parts/ ... /4630.html Can it be "re-lined"? It doesn't need to look pretty. It just needs to stop the air from flowing into the cab.

Does anybody know where I can get the lower shift boot for a 5spd? See picture. I found one listed at Team Cherokee, but is was for a 2.5L. (That is the one on the left.) Image Not Found There is a cold breeze blowing up through the 4wd lever.

I replace the catalytic converter two years ago. It clogged up and just about killed the engine. I limped it home...just barely. I will switch the o2 sensor, and new plugs and wires. This may be completely unrelated, but last summer, on a 100+ degree day, I was stopped at a light for a long time with the engine temp rising. Eventually pulled into a parking spot. Shot off the truck. Got out. When I closed the door, I heard a "pop" noise. Looked under the truck and saw the coolant pouring onto the ground from the res. bottle. The screw cap popped off. It would not screw back on. I called my mechanic for help. He told me I could have a leaking head gasket. This could cause back pressure in the cooling system that caused the cap to pop off. I got a new res bottle and cap. Replaced just the cap and have not had that problem since. However, could a back cylinder be the issue?

MD has historic plates for vehicle that are 20 yrs+ old. So, that is an option. But I believe there are restrictions on driving it - ie. maximum miles per yr, holidays and weekends. I will look into it. This is a daily driver.

Well, after 25 years, the truck has failed the MD emissions test. Once every two years, MD requires an emissions test for all vehicles in certain counties. Every previous test it has passed with flying colors, but not yesterday. It failed two tests - hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide tests. The liturature lists some likely causes. The first cause for both tests is "air to fuel mixture too rich." Which leads to my issues/questions. About two years ago - after the previous test - I replaced the distributor. (I was replacing the cap and one of the screws broke inside the distributor. After failed attempts to remove the old screw, I just purchased a replacement distributor.) Ever since then, the truck does not have the same pick up (HA-HA) it used to have. It starts fine, it runs fine. However, it just doesn't have the excelleration it used to have, either starting out or on the highway. For example, on highways I have to shift down to 4th to maintain my speed on even modest hills. I was careful line up the rotor when I installed the replacement. It only seemed to fit in one location. Is it possible that I didn't line it up right? Can I adjust the timing? My Chiltons and Haynes indicated that I cannot adjust the timing. Or are my issues elsewhere on the truck?

I've had success at PepBoys. Many other retail outlets carry it or can get it with in a couple days.

We (wife and I) went to one back in '98. It was outdoors. Jeep set up a course in a field. We drove one of their vehicles. A rep had to ride with us. If I remember, it was "invitation" only. We got the invite in the mail and had to RSVP.

The ebay bumper lists only black. I would like to stay with chrome. The custom bumpers look nice and the price is reasonable. I don't know what shipping from MN to MD would cost. I had asked the question about license plate mounting and lights for the plate, but no one replied to that inquiry. MD requires lighting for the rear tag. Also, see above about keeping chrome. Those things said, I do like the looks of the custom. It looks really solid. I don't know what it could tow. I personally wouldn't be hauling alot.

Thanks for your input. I not looking to tow anything heavier than a small landscape trailer.

Does anyone have experience with this brand of bumpers? http://www.westinshop.com/product/Westi ... p149-c8844 I am looking for a replacement for the '87. I looks closer to the orignal then others advertised in other threads. It claims to be "universal" but how close is it to fit? What is the quality?

Go to http://www.jeepz.com/forum/vin.php enter the VIN. It will tell you what month it rolled off the line and what options/features it had from the factory.

My Comanche will be 25 this year. Technically, it's my wifes. She bought it before we were married. So, it has lasted longer than our marriage - which is still going strong. I hope it continues that way. TW, Where in MD are you? Don't the "historic tags" come with restrictions on driving?

I had similar problems like that in past. Check the engine speed sensor. The engine would crank but won't fire cause the sensor wasn't working. Just my $.02

Follow up to my brake light problem. I checked the ground on the rear tail light. That was ok. I traced the wires from the fuse box to the brake light switch then to where it disappears in the steering column. Traced from the tail lights back the other direction. I deternined it was the turn signal switch. Bought one at PepBoys. Just replaced it. NOW I HAVE BRAKE LIGHTS!!! This forum is great to help diagnose and fix my issues. Now I want to get my Comanche restored.

Here is my brake light problem. My turn signals work, both R and L, my flashers work. All front and rear. Running lights work, as well. My brake lights don't work. Replaced bulbs and brake light switch. Still no brake lights. We should I start to diagnose?

Are all MJ Laredos longbeds?
87MJTIM replied to terrawombat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yours is a Laredo - top of the line. I was simply stating that the fold-away mirrors were not a Laredo-only option. All model trims could get those. Do you have any pictures of the interior? Another thing I've noticed is that all Laredo's come with red or tan interior. Here is the interior. I always though of it as brown, but I guess it would be tan. Tim -

The bumpers are chrome with black caps. One thing I have not seen on other Comanches are the swing are mirrors. Mine are original equipment, but most of the others have the lower profiles. Does anyone else have these mirrors? Tim Yea, those are the "towing" mirrors. My '88 SporTruck had those, so it wasn't a top of the line option - could be had even on the basest of base models. It came with AC, cruise control, AM/FM Cass, power windows & locks, off road package. Not the typical "base" model. As for the color, it is the original - minus the clear coating. It has thin, red stripping down the sides and on the hood. The tailgate "Jeep" name is a sticker, not painted. I want to spend the $$$ to restore it. Keep the original color. Tim -

My Lorado '87 has the long bed. -
Forgive my ignorance, but what is "QD cleaner"? I have had a mas cyl leak previously, and I believe currently, too. I am also having multiple electrical issues - radio has power but not sound from speakers, fan blower doesn't work, brake lights don't work. I have felt behind the fuse box and it is damp. I plan on pulling it off and looking at it. What do I clean it with? Tim

What's the most miles you got from a full tank?
87MJTIM replied to Jerry's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I get 400 +/- on a tank. That is mostly commuting back and forth to work and the auto parts store  I can get 450 ++ on highway driving. 87 4.0, 5 spd, 23.5 gal. Tim -
Hello Everyone. I found this site a few months ago and have been snooping around. I finally signed up. Its an '87 4.0L, 5sp, 4wd, Longbed, 260k original miles. My wife bought it out of college new. I started driving it in '91 when she moved up to a Cherokee. It became a spare vehicle when I got a '97 Wrangler. Both the Cherokee and Wrangler are long gone, but the Comanche LIVES ON! About two years ago I started to drive it regularly. It is showing its age - lots of aches and pains. I am wanting to get it restored to (almost) original condition. While I have the apptitude and physical ability to do most of the work, I do not have the time, space or tools to take on that task. I am asking for advise/suggestions on what to look for in a shop to do the work. Should I find a shop that specializes in restorations, specifically Jeeps? Can a small local mechanic take on this project? Can it be done in phases - engine and drive train, mechanical, body and paint? I live near Frederick MD, so if you know of a shop in MD or southern PA, let me know. Thanks Tim
