Airaid Or K&n Intake Air Filter Systems
RockMJ replied to Keyav8r's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you wanted to throw a half CAI into the Jeep, Rusty's makes an "Intake Tube" which utilizes the factory intake hose, removing the box, and putting a K&N cone filter in its place. This is about the only product I would mention from Rusty's and it is fairly inexpensive as well. Link below. http://www.rustysoffroad.com/jeep-performance-parts-products/jeep-intake-systems/rustys-airtube-xj-cherokee-1.html Unfortunately, as you have found out, not too many manufacturers make much in the way of aftermarket for the Renix equipped Jeep's. Hope this helps, RockMJ -
So you adjusted the worm gear on the steering box? That is a big no-no unless you know what you are doing, and being as it is a new box you would have no reason to adjust it as it is in spec from the factory. An adjusted worm gear way beyond spec can cause a whole host of issues including binding. Not good to adjust unless absolutely needed and even then it is a one shot deal. The loss of power steering could very well be due to air in the lines. Have you thoroughly burped the system for trapped air? As for the wandering, when you put the box in did you make sure you centered the box one and a half turns to center from full lock? If you are off the steering box is going to try and correct and recenter itself leaving you fighting to control it on the road. IIRC, the Durango box is a standard three full turns from full lock to full lock leaving you with a centered steering at one and a half. You would have to confirm this as its been a number of years since my Durango/Wagoneer box swap. Hope this was helpful. Let us know what you find out RockMJ

Based on your posts I am sure you have done this but have you checked for vacuum leaks in and around the intake manifold? Generally with the IAC you are fine cleaning it in the manner you did. If it is shot to begin with it really would not matter. Did you torque the manifold bolts down to spec? It sounds like you reworked your TPS to spec as well. If you have done all this minus the vacuum check, go over the lines and make sure nothing is unplugged, broken, or missing. A buddies 90 XJ was running away all of the sudden and upon inspection a tap on the manifold went bad and gave up the ghost. Quick replacement and re-routing of the vacuum lines fixed his problem. Good luck RockMJ

37's are aggressive for any smaller Jeep running stock axles. My ZJ with built 44's was safely running 35's as the benefits of 37's did not outweigh the risks. Are you going for bragging rights or functionality? Keep in mind I am asking this totally unbiased as it is your rig, yada yada. Sticking to 35's can be accomplished with a bit of work and depending on your driving style, that size tire will not overly stress components. If you are going for functionality 35's are your best bet if those two tire choices are the top of the top. Coming from someone who has run both over the years, I would go 35's every chance over the 37's RockMJ

Looking good so far! I like the LCOG builds the best. And I'm not sure what it is, but every MJ I see outside of the forum has the grille upside down, including the one I just purchased. MJ owners lol RockMJ

First Jeep I Ever Touch! Kinda Need Help! Lol
RockMJ replied to Sohosh's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Well, this post reassured me to never travel outside of the US. I have a buddy who wants me to go to PR with him when he visits his family. I like my blood right where it is currently so I will pass. As for the retro-build, you would need to keep it within the proportions of the Jeep already or it would like Sarah Jessica Parker's face rolling around with a Jeep tailgate chasing it. Could work if don't properly. Good luck RockMJ -

haha yeah I go in cycles with CL. I get burnt out though because the majority of the stuff on there are useless and people ask a fortune. I have big plans for this one and I will keep a build journal up to date, not sure if I will do it in here or start a new one. I feel like I'm thread jacking my own thread lol. Currently the Jeep is about an hour from my house so ill be taking a trip up there today to really assess her formally. I should also point out that we have gained a good number of FL MJ owners recently, its great! RockMJ -

For sure! I did pick up a 1990 2WD, AW4 Eliminator for next to nothing. Its a one owner Jeep that has lived its entire life in FL. Its got a few issues, mainly the trans got wet and is not shifting (electrical bug someplace) and a few dents. The Jeep has a dealer installed moonroof which needs a gasket (anyone know where to get this), an unhealthy 213K mile 4.0 which is getting yanked out and fully rebuilt, and surprisingly zero electrical issues minus the trans not shifting. I'm very happy with the purchase and my good buddy Drahcir495 and myself are going to be tearing into her very soon It is the perfect platform for a restoration build, but enough yapping, here are some photos. -
Awesome build thus far! Looking foward to seeing how she progresses in the future

Been a LONG time since I checked your build last. Fantastic work my friend! I don't like those wheels on the JK's but they look proper on the MJ! I need another MJ soon! RockMJ -

Hey man! I was just looking at your continued build last night! And they did make the GTI in orange but ive got a soft spot for the white ones lol. It is a great car and I absolutely love driving it and that turbo spooling sound is heavenly. Plans for the next MJ are a complete "frame-off" restoration so to say. Completely stripping the Jeep down to nothing, rebuilding the engine, transmission, etc. Going to keep this one with the old school feel to it as a revived classic. And no, I will not be painting this one orange lol! RockMJ -
Mods if you could please move this to the Wanted section it would be most appreciated. I did not realize what section I was in RockMJ

I should also post an update of what I have been up to myself. Before I sold the MJ I searched high and low for my dream XJ. Finally found a late model 01 XJ in Miami in the ultra rare factory orange paint. Talk about a head turner and both the XJ and the MJ parked side by side it was oh-so-sexy! The Jeep was in great shape overall, minus a filthy interior, some broken plastic pieces, and a squeaking serpentine belt. After a long arm kit, and a ton of other upgrades I ended up with this Well, as fortune would have it, my "dream" was not meant to be. After owning the Jeep for about five months I ended up having to sell it due to work arrangements and a large increase in my daily commute. After striping most of the parts off the XJ I traded her in for an 08 GTI. As we all know, we can never leave well enough alone so money got thrown at the GTI as well. So as of today I have some tuning work done, dual intercoolers, performance brakes, wheels/tires, yada yada. And here is the current ride... Now you are probably wondering what, why, and who cares right? Well, this all brings me to my next point. I am in the market for another MJ! I miss driving my old MJ so badly that nothing since then has "filled the void" so to speak (I really sound like a junky). So, with the help of Drahcir495, I have been on the hunt for the next project with plans to one-up my last one big time. Stay tuned and keep an eye out for my username as I promise to not disappoint! Any updates on the old girl? I miss this Jeep every single day, you have no idea! I hope all is well and she is being treated well :brows: RockMJ -
Hey everyone! I am back from a short stint of absence and I am looking for my next MJ project! Looking for a late model 90-92 MJ in 2WD with the 4.0 and 5-Speed. Running and driving is a must for me as I will be driving the next one back home to Florida. I am looking for one either in FL, GA, or Alabama but I am open to any MJ within a days drive from Tampa Bay. Trying to find one with relatively low miles like my last one (under 110K) but not entirely necessary. If you can, please post up pics and specs or PM me with the details! Looking to get this done soon! Thanks a ton, and its nice to be back :) RockMJ

Ty, I ended up putting them on my XJ. And yes, I NEEEED to get my arse going with making these custom overlays. Ive gotten a large amount of questions about them when the MJ was on eBay or JF for sale. Today is a bittersweet day for me. The MJ has officially sold, but I am more than comfortable with the deal after speaking with the new owner for about four hours on the phone. Super cool Jeep guy from IL that has gone over in depth with me his future plans for her and I feel confident that he is going to take care of her like I have. I also told him its totally cool to keep this build thread updated with future modifications! So ladies and gents, that is all she wrote with my portion of the MJ build. She will be taken care of in her new home, I have no worries ;) RockMJ -

That badge is incredible. Might I ask where you got it? Its the simple things that make a build that much better RockMJ

yep...only option is the Hack N Tap for the 242. You'll read that a sye with complete shaft is stronger than a Hack N Tap, but I wouldn't worry about it, especially with moderate size tires. I have used both a Hack N Tap and a complete sye with shaft replacement and both have worked fine. For what it's worth, I find it easier to do the Hack N Tap. It took less than a hour in my driveway. Agreed. When I did mine on a ZJ I had it was easier than the old JB Conversions one I used. No time spent splitting the case or fiddling with the hardware. Just take your time measuring and if you can have a drill with a level on it, use it. I have not looked into the options for the 242 in a while but I came across the same thing as most. Hack and tap or swap the case. There are tutorials on youtube I just looked up for reference. Measure six times, cut once! RockMJ

Thanks for the compliments guys. I feel like I could sit on it longer and make what is really worth, but these things are a hit and miss market. A true enthusiast would pay top dollar for a rust free restored Comanche where most people think its cool, and an impulse buy type thing. I just do not have the space to keep it any longer as I am not driving it daily anymore so its just sitting. Its a shame and I am going to miss how damn smooth it drives down the road. My 01 XJ rides like a Suzuki Samurai compared to it lol. Oh and btw, if you love on it...make sure you buff and wax it after. As of tonight, my eBay watchers are up to 63. Thats pretty insane actually RockMJ
