Cool, didn't have to take the column apart as suggested above. The switch for those of you who don't know is mounted to the top of the column back towards the firewall. Just had to take the 2 nuts out of the mounting bracket to lower the column. Then had access to the switch. 2 small bolts and done. Now everything works except the turn signals. Glad I looked over the old column before diving in. For 11 bucks, I just bought a new one instead of putting the one from the old column back in. Didn't want to take the chance that it would stop working next week. On to the next item on the Looooonnnnggg list.

1990 Rebirth ('97 Conversion)
Dadinator replied to Rymanrph's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I'm thinking about swapping the lift and tires over to '88 and going a little bigger on this one, but that's a while down the road. As far as other upgrades go, I'd like to do a spray in bed liner, clear turn signals, fog lights and I still need to modify my Dakota roll bar to fit. Eventually, I'd like to put a stroker in it, but I need this engine to last me for long time. Well, it's your truck, but I think it's nearly perfect now. It is quite frankly my favorite comanche at this time. I love the subtle things you've done such as the cherokee doors, and bumpers and the TJ wheels. I love the stance as is. It's all Jeep! I would do the liner, fog lights and Dakota roll bar, but not a fan of the clear turn signals. Great Job! -
Really?? That's awesome. I'll be looking at it another day, though. Done for the weekend. Thanks!

Been troubleshooting the electrical issues and found most of it. The dash lights and parking lights were simply a fuse. The horn, blower, lighter, radio and wipers are the ignition switch. They work if I screw around with the key switch. So, unfortunately I get to take the column apart again. :headpop:

OK, So, I figured out the issue... The parking lights and dash lights were simply the fuse. Everything else (except the turn signals) is the ignition switch. The blower, lighter, radio and horn all work if I screw with the key switch. So, looks like I have to take the column apart again. :headpop:

I Love the black grill. Don't change it. -
Clearer now. Something to check later this week. I'm done messing with the truck this weekend. KYMJ, where are you in KY? Just curious...

Well as I said, the 4X4 is working again. Modified the CAD to get the axle locked as it should be. Today, I put on the exhaust system. Chopped the stock muffler off and installed the Flowmaster. Not as much rumble as I expected, but better than stock. It definitely sounds better than the straight header. Here are some pics...

Symptoms? Pictures? I have an electrical issue, See post Electrical Gremlins in Tech. It may be this... I don't know. Would like more info? :huh???:
-
Thanks, but the FRAM is staying until the next oil change. I have heard about them being junk, but I've used them before with no issues. Anyway, today I got the 4wheel drive working. WoooHooo!!!!!! The CAD was defective so I locked it in as per instructions on this site. Looked over the electrical issues I'm having but no luck there yet. I think I'll put the exhaust system back on next.

I will have to look into the fusable links you describe. I looked over the truck today while working on the 4wd and didn't find anything obvious. Any pictures of the fusable links you describe? Thanks.

Rymanrph, Man that sucks that you lost your job. I feel your pain, however. I've been there and may be there again at the end of the year if I don't find something different. My brother in law lost his job a couple of months ago, too. :ack: Anyway, just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how much I appreciate your project. I've gotten several ideas from yours. You do Great Work! I appreciate the fact that you drop in on "The Family Truck" too. Good luck to you and keep us posted. Keep checking out the family truck too. :wrench: It will get done someday. Mike. -
Thanks. All good info. When I get a chance to look at it again, I'll be sure to check all recomendations. It's probably a ground. I've had the thing torn apart, so I probably messed up a ground wire or something. Got a picture of that ground under the dash you describe? It is a manual tranny now, but it was an automatic until this year. If you're curious, check "The Family Truck" build thread in the MJ Projects forum... Probably be next week before I mess with it again. Thanks again to all.

Been reassembling the Family Truck and have run into some electrical issues. The horn, parking lights, hvac controls and clock have no power. It starts, the headlights and brake lights work. Any ideas where to start? Obviously, I'll check fuses, but is there any known issue that could effect all of these things at once? Thanks.
-
Making progress. Steering wheel attached. Starting to look like a truck again. :clapping: Got an electrical issue that I'm going to look into :dunno: , but it starts and runs. Hopefully, if it quits raining, I'll be able to drive it up to the barn this week. WooHoo!
-
Yes, it's a great feeling. Today, I fixed the wiring mess under the dash and put the dash partially together. Pics...

IT LIVES! ! ! ! ! Thanks to a post on here, I searched and found what wires to splice to fool it into thinking the non existent auto trans is in park. :hmm: Started right up!!! Swapped the oil pressure sending unit from the doner so that the oil pressure guage is no longer pegged and now works properly. Makes me happy and now the project is getting exciting again. Sounds mean with no exhaust system hooked up. Should sound real good with the flowmaster muffler on it when I get to it.

Well, time for an update. I got the rest of the bolts in the transmission and crossmembers. I attached the starter. I had to lengthen the driveshaft as it was a bit short with the tranny change. Used the cherokee driveshaft for a section. Put new fluid in the tranny. drained the transfer case. Put some hydraulic fluid into the clutch master cylinder. Need to bleed it. Not today, though. Put the shifter on. Slowly coming together. I was going to put bucket seats and a console in it, but I'm reconsidering that. I may stick with the bench seat. Toying with the idea of putting a provision to put a wrangler seat in the bed from time to time with belts, etc. for when grandkids get a little bigger.
-
Finally got to work on the truck again. The daughter got married at my house so the truck got put on hold for several weeks. Today, I bolted the cross member on the rest of the way and hooked up the front driveshaft. Had to change out the bracket that the transfer case linkage hooks to on the tranny tunnel. didn't realize that it was different for the 5 speed. So hooked the linkage up. Tried the rear driveshaft, but it is a bit too short. I'll have to have it lengthened. Put the crankshaft sensor on. Next, I'll hook the starter back up and the line between the clutch master and slave cyl. Slowly but surely...

Here she is! Project smokey!

Did you buy that in KY? I think I saw it on ebay awhile back. -
So, I finally got some time to work on the old mule this weekend. I didn't take any pics, but I got the transmission bolted in. Woohoo! Now I should be able to get back to working on it from time to time. The tranny was holding me back as I needed help on that one. My son helped me. On to the next item on the very long list. :wrench:

Another on the list to take the bike.

My wife is a picture maniac. We have a million really good pics. Here are 3 we took in Maui in '08... Enjoy!

Well, I didn't know about that. I don't know if they did or not. I'm guessing not. I've searched this forum and it appears that most don't have problems if they have it done. I'm plowing forward. If I have clutch issues, I'll know why. At least it will come apart easier the next time. :thwak:
