Promised pics... The donor: The floor of the MJ: Top without the headliner:
-
WooHoo! The donor was delivered today. I'll post pics of it and the stripped inside of the cab tonight. :clapping:
-
Fixin' plans... Swap the tranny and all the related components. Fix the steering components that are a problem. Stop the bleeding. Replace the windshield. Flush and replace all fluids. Put in the console and gauges from the donor. Bucket seats. Though the donors seats are not usable. Few other trinkets from the donor. I might be able to salvage the carpet, but if not then new carpet. New headliner. Once nice and drivable, then I'll do the chevy drop shackles and pucks for about 2 inches of lift. Some 15X8's and 31's. Some minor body clean up. Will need to find a roll bar and some lights. There are some other small ideas I have, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Gotta get it back on the road first.

Excellent! I pulled the bench seat, carpet, and headliner (if you can call it that) out today. Floorboards are GREAT! Just a bit of surface rust in a couple of spots. Will clean and coat. Somebody should have bought this when they had a chance. :brows:

A little history. 1990 Pioneer Long Bed, Metric Ton, 4.0, AW4. It used to be a charcoal gray color. My father-in-law bought it new. He drove it until 2004. Hit a deer with it. Fixed it. I bought it off of him for my son for $1K. He thought it needed a transmission, but it ended up being a TPS. I cleaned it up, fixed the TPS, welded the header, and put a few odds and ends on it to get it back up to snuff. He drove it about 2 years and then wrecked it. Hit a tree. Fixed it. Bought a Cherokee with mechanical problems and took the body pieces off it to fix then sold the rest. Back on the road. 2 months later, wrecked it again. (Snow) Totaled the bed. Bought a bed from a member and a tailgate from a local yard and installed. back on the road. He drove it until the last few months. He let it run down. I tried to sell it on here, but couldn't get a bite. So I took it off his hands. Now the fun begins. It needs a windshield and steering column and most likely a steering box. It also leaks oil and tranny fluid. I don't care about the tranny though, because... I just scored a 1990 cherokee 2 door with a 4.0 and 5sp from a local yard for $400. It has good dash, windshield, guages, etc. I'm gonna convert it, and fix what's wrong with the truck with it. I'll put a new clutch, etc. in and check everything else out while it's apart. So, here are some pics that I already have of it. I'll update as I go. Oh, and it's not for sale anymore.

BJ? I'll do the 97+ front if the Cherokee donor I find with a 5sp is that new. My thoughts exactly on the lift components.
-
MK, not quite my style. Sounds fun though. I'm thinking tear down and fix what's wrong. (which is quite a bit) Fix any rot that I find. (haven't checked the floors yet) Convert to 5sp. Small lift and 31's or so. redo interior with buckets and some real guages, new headliner, carpet and console. Maybe a roll bar and some lights. This thing will be used as a farm truck with minor off roading. It has been in the family since new. My father in law bought it new. I bought it from him 7 years ago for my son. He tore it up being a kid with no money. Now I have it. So, let the fun begin. Probably start tearing into it this week. First thing is to fix the steering column and 4X4 (CAD). Then see if I can stop the bleeding.

After some thought, I think I will keep it. The wife is in agreement. Since I was going to spend $5K or so to buy a truck, now I just have to fix this one...Again. Now to find a MJ or XJ donor with an AX15. The bed is in too good of shape to bob. I bought it from a member awhile back. Rust and dent free. I've rebuilt this thing a couple of times, now I'll be doing it for myself. The mind is churning...

Most likely what is wrong with mine as well. What is the point of the CAD? Does it improve MPG a bit? Does it keep the axle from binding on the road in turns or anything?
-
I just aquired my son's MJ. You can see it in the classfieds. Now do I sell it, part it out or fix it up? I would prefer a short bed 5 sp., this one is a long bed auto. If I part it out, I'd be keeping the metric ton springs and D44. I guess now I need to change my screen name. :dunno:

Got it all back together and buttoned up. Now when the son get's back from college in a week or 2, we'll put the sucker back in the truck. Thanks for the input. . .
-
Thanks for that. I'll give it a try this weekend. . . :D

Need more help, folks. Now that I have the transfer cases apart, I can't seem to get the good tight chain on. Do I have to completely disassemble this thing? I was hoping I could get by with just the covers, but; I get it on and it's cocked so when I straighten the housing to insert the main shaft, the chain pops off. If I try to put it on with the shaft already in, (Hard to get to), then I can't get it on. Help!
-
Thanks for the heads up, but; I won't be making that upgrade. This truck doesn't get off roaded that much and when it does, it's just trails and just around the farm. Later. . .
-
Thanks, Man. I'll be fixing it this weekend. Then the son can have his truck back. :D It's been in the driveway for 2 weeks on jack stands.

The transfer case was making a lot of noise. I picked up a new (used) one cheap. It was a bit different. Both NP231 J's but; the new one has a different hook up for the speedo (electric vs. cable) and no provision for the 4 vacuum hose fitting that is on the comanche. So I figured that I would just swap out the parts I need. Once apart, I found out the the only problem with old one is that the chain is stretched out and banging against the inside of the case. So, I'm going to make a good transfer case out of the 2 of these. What kind of oil do you put in this thing when back together and how much of it? Also, when I get a good one, then I may try to fix the other and sell. Is there a master link on these things like there is on other chains? Can a link be removed? Or do I need to get a new chain? Can you get a chain or are they cost prohibitive? Thanks, Mike.

Thanks!

Son's comanche has I assume a NP231. 90 4.0 AW4. It is making all kinds of noises so we need to replace. Will any Jeep NP231 fit? What do I need to look for? Thanks.

Looks Good John. . . I'm glad someone got use of that lift kit. :D
-
another lift question.
Dadinator replied to dirty88comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've still got a rough country AAL kit for sale in the classifieds. Brand new in the box. The son wrecked the MJ (Twice) before we put it on. Now I'm just trying to get rid of it. Make me an offer. -
Back on the road again!!!
-
Well, I got a set of 88 rear springs at the bone yard. When I put them up against the MT springs, they didn't have near the arch. So, rather than risking lowering the truck with the new springs, I took both sets apart and used the main spring from the regular MJ and all the rest of the springs from the MT set. Seems to work. They have the arch that it used to. I got them put in but; called it a day before we got the axle attached and everthing else done. We'll see later in the week if all's well. I think it will be.

Metric Ton Rear Spring Question
Dadinator replied to Dadinator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yep, broke the main. . . -
My son wrecked the MJ again. . . He broke one of the rear springs. What kind of springs would be replacements? If I scour the bone yards, what are my options?
-
Good idea.
