Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd
comenschen replied to comenschen's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, head is out to be decked, gasket set won't be here until late next week. Going to go pull the old drivetrain out today, so I guess I'll update my project thread later tonite. -
Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd

Oooh, almost forgot...I assume renix and HO head bolts are the same? Snapped one on the HO pulling the head. Not sure what the general opinion here is on reusing head bolts, however I'm quite sure the HO head has never been off until now. I'll just steal one off the renix if it will work. -
Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd

HO vs renix.....I really couldn't care less. I just need this thing back up and running. Probably won't even bother to port match the intake (we'll see once I have the renix intake next to it). And now that I'm throwing my HO engine in this thing, my other truck will be getting a drivetrain that's in a whole other dimension of blasphemous. That's a story for another time and thread :) Tore down the HO tonight to make sure I wasn't wasting my time. All bearings and pistons look pretty mint. Surprising, b/c the rest of the motor was black as tar inside. So should I be ordering a renix full gasket set tomorrow due to using the renix intake? Or do i need to order an HO gasket set, plus a renix intake gasket? :dunno: -
Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd
comenschen replied to comenschen's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for all the tips! I think for ease of getting it back together, I'll run the renix intake. Couldn't I just port match the renix intake using the HO intake gasket? I was going to pick up a full gasket kit and reseal the engine before I put it in. Would the intake gasket be the only thing different between a renix and HO gasket kit? -

Fuel lines...forgot about that one. -
Yeah yeah, I've searched. I think I have it covered. just wanted some of you OG's to chime in if I missed something. Here goes. Truck is a 89 4.0l ba10 2wd. Blew head gasket this morning. Truck already has 4wd front axle with matching 4.10 rear. Was about to put a 96 XJ AX15 in when this happened :( The engine had a knock anyway, so this is what I'm going to put in: -91 HO engine/intake manifold/HO APN header. I know I need to adapt the TPS and weld an O2 bung into the header. Then will use all other Renix stuff. I'll just make my own intake past the TB. -96 XJ ax15. I already have the proper pilot bushing and the clutch hydraulics. Will use original renix clutch and flywheel. -91 XJ np242 OR 98 dakota np231. I think I'd rather put the 242 in. I have the linkages for both. -I have a variety of front and rear driveshafts. If none of them work, I'll modify something to work. -I have the 2wd ba10 crossmember and an XJ 4.0 4wd AW4 xmember. Will one work? If not I'll make my own. Any surprises I'll run into? Basic stuff is okay...it's the stuff i didn't think of that I'll need to order parts for that I'm concerned about.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Clutch pedal broke. I pulled it back and welded it back on in the truck. Only started a bit of the carpet on fire!
-
I made some out of some old honda wheel bearings and some steel plate. Really easy and free, have had them in my beater for awhile now with no problems or noises.
-
snow is flying here!! Nobody has one of these kicking around?
-
Here's how the truck is sitting now. Hopefully I can convert the trans to 4wd before the snow flies.
-
Here's the coil spacers I made. Gutted some old honda wheel bearings, cut out some plate and welded it on. Powercoated them up (nevermind the green....it was one color I hadn't tried yet and needed something to test it on). Super easy to make and free! Been on for half a year, no rattles. The springs were from a 4cyl 4x4, and the spacers got the height just right.

Well, time to bring this back up. This truck has been my beater for the last year. Drive it every day to work, and it's made a lot of trips to the dump. My other Comanche (Mr. Boobs II) has been shelved while I've been collecting parts for it, but at least driving this one every day keeps my wanting to get back at it. I'll update that one one in a few weeks when I have some stuff sorted out with it. Anyway, here's some stuff I've done, mainly just to keep it on the road. -all the ball joints and wheels bearings were shot on the truck. The d30 from the 86 was all good, so I swapped that in. -both front springs were broken. Again I robbed the 86 for those, and made some spacers to get the front up a bit. -the 3.07 ratio sucked, so back to the 86 to steal it's d35 (4.10's). Much better now. -took some bfg A/T's off a parts waggy I bought, threw those on with my Canyons. -ditched the load sensing valve. Ran new lines to the back and swapped in a 91 XJ prop valve. WAAAYY better. So now it seems I'm a trans and some drivshafts away from this thing being 4wd. I have an AX-15 I was going to put in it, but I've found a new home for that. Now looking for a 4wd ba10 tailhousing to convert my trans (check classifieds, I put a wanted ad up!!!) I'll try and upload some pics this weekend. That's all you guys want anyway!
-
Anybody have a ba10 4wd tailhousing kicking around? Let me know a price shipped to 56735. Or if you're in Canada, price shipped to R5G 1G8. -Thanks
-
Toyota Supra R154. Aisin trans very similar to the ax-15. Jeep ax-15 bellhousing will bolt right up to it, and the ratios would be better suited to what you're after.
-
The Dakota was a 3.9 v6. Missing the bellhousing and front bearing retainer. (not that I could have used the bellhousing anyway)
-
Picked up an ax15 and tcase out of a 98? Dakota a buddy was scrapping. Anyone ever use one in their Comanche? Thinking of replacing the 2wd pukegoat in my 89 beater with it. I already planned on finding a bellhousing, front bearing retainer (he used it for another project), throwout fork and slave cyl. Mainly wondering about speedo and tcase clocking, as the rest should go together fine.

Steering Box and Front End Alignment
comenschen replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Time to whip out the tape measure. You can get your toe set by yourself just fine, which is all the shop would do anyway. For years my brother kept modding the suspension on his bmw...custom camber plates on the front, welded adjusters to the rear subframe, constantly changing coilovers. I kept bugging him to bring it by my work so I could do a real alignment instead of his tape measure floor job. He finally did. After not having to adjust anything, I stopped doubting the tape measure alignment. -
Question for the Ford 8.8 users
comenschen replied to terrawombat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I bought perches from my local dealer. It was a Mopar Performance part number, and like $11 for the pair. Sure beats screwing around to save the old ones. I'll try to get a pic of them on the axle and part number tomorrow. -
Thank goodness for people like you! Whenever I think I have a Comanche problem I just need to come over to CC....as long as I don't find any more cheap Comanche's near me I *should* feel like I'm under control with only having 2.
-
"a little rust to deal with.....really? Are you trying to be a jerk? I suppose you could make it up to us unfortune rusty MJ owners by borrowing a better camera for your next round of pics. I'll have more hours of rust repair in my truck then you'll have in your whole project! Really though, looking foward to see how this one shapes up! (assuming you get a better camera of course)

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project
comenschen replied to mnkyboy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Awesome! You going to rock just the spartan in the front for awhile? (I assume you haven't swapped your d44 in the rear yet?)...maybe I missed what you have in the rear right now :dunno:- 798 replies

- 2.5l
- supercharged
- (and 7 more)

Yeah, I knew that old J10 hadn't served it's full purpose yet. A buddy wants the 360 for his Javelin, so after that I don't feel too bad putting it down. The floor was actually done in 2 pieces, rear and front. Here's a shot of the rear piece before I started welding it in. For a truck I was going to do a ghetto floor repair on, it actually came out pretty good I think!

86 2.5 to 91 4.0 Swap...(aka Mr. Boobs II)
comenschen replied to comenschen's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Thanks man  It's pretty hit and miss when I get time to work on my own stuff, but hopefully I'll make another surge forward on Boobs in the next month. I still have the turbines from the 86, so now with the new truck I have two sets:) I kinda just wrote the turbines off because they were 7" and the 86 only had 2 center caps. I am starting to like them more though. I'll have to see how the powdercoating comes out on the Canyons before I decide. Started a thread on the 89....wife got pissed when I started talking about things I might do to it. She just doesn't understand. -
Btw, I have nothing against 4 bangers....but sounds like yours is done and my first reaction would be to buy a 4.0 XJ for cheap and swap that sh?! up!
