86 2.5 Running rough/ stalling issue
eaglescout526 replied to I_s2k's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not all MJs and XJs came with a hood light. Chances are higher that it never left the factory with one. They were an accessory. I still have two left I am selling if you want to put one on. No. The XJ got a really cool accessory exactly like what GM put on their cars. Its an air compressor system that raised and lowered shocks based on the weight of the rear of the vehicle. Has nothin to do with the MJ brake adjustor in the rear. -

First pic is hood light(red), second is the bullet connector for the 4wd light, third is the cruise control ground Not familar with the second pic, I have the same plug on my XJ but it is for the automatic leveling system which the MJ never got. Third is unknown. I have it too and not sure where it goes. Not sure about the MAP voltage. -

That cannister on the rear of the valve cover appears to be a filter of some sort. I looked inside and I saw a bunch of wires that were in similar size to what you find on a wire brush. I sprayed some carb cleaner in it and the liquid came out brown. -

Wide Open Throttle switch. This was phased out in 87 and used the power steering pressure switch to get the same reading to the ECU when it is in WOT. I dont know what else used this switch, YJs had it from 87-90 but that still doesnt make it common to find. -

How about the block to the firewall? Bat to block? -

That sounds very correct. I got mine to fall in between the 4.63 and 4.65 just to be in the middle but its preference really. Your TPS was out of spec by a bit. The 5V being rock solid is good, ECU is outputting the correct voltage to the TPS. Now it shouldnt be getting more fuel than it needs to. I once had a TPS do some funny stuff to me while driving. Idle would be either crap or not and driving would be great and then slow down and pick back up for no reason. Changed out the TPS and its been fantastic since. -
I concur with you Pete. There was someone on facebook who bought an early 87 with the 2.1L

Not really. I’m low or out of stock on a couple parts. I have everything else though. 89XJ is Renix so yes it would work. Hell these would work in an HO XJ. I can assemble a “kit” of all the parts I have remaining, I’d have to make the vac harness unless you wish to make your own and you would have to source the 4 port “football” vacuum reservoir, brake switch and the stalk that controls cruise.

I had oil free coolant and coolant free oil but I didn’t have exhaust free coolant. I’d still check it just to be on the safe side as mine did the same thing as yours and it was due to a bad head gasket. Rear is hard to replace. I think there was some NOS around but i dont know anymore. I dont work at a mopar dealer anymore. Yes they do pull straight out and the grommets can be replaced. There’s a write up somewhere on adjusting them. I can post how later from my TBI manual. -

That unplugged would cause a high idle, course it’s an 86 so it’s an odd duck already because of how vastly different it is in the way the vacuum lines are run. So it could be but it won’t hurt to solve all the bad leaks and issues. 1. Have you done a compression test on the cylinders to rule out a bad head gasket? How about the the front CCV? Is it plugged or does the little ball inside rattle freely? I thought of another one. Have you tested the TPS and made sure it’s adjusted properly? -

This is gonna be one of those threads 5 years from now where page 5 may not be applicable anymore haha. Could you link it please? Just copy the link and paste it here. -
Idle Stepper motor issues

Sounds about right. I dont know much and have never owned a 4.0L to help out much. Ironically I have AMC books on the engine and it’s fuel system. -
Idle Stepper motor issues

No. Similar in function but no. The IAC is not as serviceable as the ISA. IAC is 4.0L ONLY. ISA is 2.5L ONLY. From what I have heard about the IAC, is that it can get gummed up from carbon build up over time. Idle Speed Actuator Idle Air Controller -

When my grandfather owned mine, he used to load up a small boat in the back and take it to go fishin. -
Where to put this wire...

Ahhh. Yes I apologize for leaving that detail out. Perfect on the location! -

What a mess!! But I have most of it sorted. It was a lot worse before. I hate this AC hose routing though. The hell were they thinking in 84? Any ways the only stray wire is that blue one with a tracer right there on the fender by the rubber stop. Oh and the wiring for the automatic leveling compressor and trans harness but that will be taken care of at a later time. I am missing a new positive battery cable for both the relay and starter, and the start signal for the plug, relay and solenoid. Manifold is in now. And still have a wiring mess. Thats all the system sentry. Had to label the plugs and figure it all out. The smart move is AMC just grounded all the level sensors to one ground. Now to do some serious cable management here. But I am damn close now. Had to fight a bolt when installing the manifold, of course! Looking at these pics, I think I understand why AMC took the whole wire routing to the front behind the grill vs the firewall. -
Where to put this wire...
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This is a wire thats on the engine bay side. I feel like I would be fine without it, but I also dont want it to be one of those things where it will constantly be on and that wire is technically an on off switch. I guess I could figure it out once I finally put power back to the XJ. -
Where to put this wire...
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok so the heater relay is as follows power from the alt field goes to No 4 on the relay and is spliced to go to the cluster run power goes to multiple things and one is to no 1 on the relay which is the switched part of the relay 2 on the relay goes to the wire we are talking about 3 is ground. Using the 85 manual here -
I know, I know, its not MJ but I like asking you guys for opinions and answers on the XJ as well. Ok, I have everything buttoned up except for some wires. One of which is the system sentry engine off input wire. Wire was orignally spliced into the choke heater relay(I4) or directly wired to the choke heater relay(V6). Now that its going to TBI, that stuff is gone. Where should I run this wire? My understanding of this wire is it acts like a on off switch for the sentry so its not constantly on and draining the battery. From the diagram it gets power when the choke heater relay is powered along with the other things that are spliced into it. So when its off, as is everything else. Where on the 2.5L TBI circuit can I do this? I have a couple ideas but would rather get maybe some more than I know. I was thinking tie it to say the O2 heater relay or fuel pump relay. Welcome to any other ideas.

I want to agree with you but I also don’t want to disagree with you there either. I put in a mopar motorad a few years ago. Now it’s opening up either a bit to early or it’s partially stuck. One of the two and I hate changing the t-stat. Hate the idea of changing it frequently too.
-
From when I ordered mine from mopar, it was made by motorad.
-
195* stat?
-
Maybe your t-stat is stuck or the wrong temp? this is where I would start if my temp was reading low. Have you confirmed the temp gauge is accurate with a infrared gun?
-
Yup! Shoot me a PM.
