Oil gushing out of top cover
eaglescout526 replied to JStone's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Little 2.5L history. Since its introduction in 1984. It has always had a plastic cover until 1991, two versions of the cover can be found, one with the AMC logo and the other without. Now since yours is a 90, it is not supposed to have that PCV in the front hole. It is supposed to be a pipe that goes to the airbox in which the intake pulls in the fumes from both holes of the valve cover to burn off any unused gases. So the valve they have in there is wrong and could be posing a problem. The other thing that can cause an oil leak is the crappy oil fill caps. The solution to this is to get a bad bike tube, cut to fit in between the lid and the gasket and it will create a tighter seal at the fill hole. Changing to aluminum is easy to do, but you have to find one and its hardware to use, otherwise you might have sealing problems using the plastic valve cover bolts. Personally, it is easier to keep the original hard plastic cover than swap over just because you have to make some mods and get new vacuum line for the aluminum cover. There is a write up somewhere on here about swapping covers. But if you swap the valve cover and get some RTV and put it on the under side of the cover real good and then install the gasket, you should get a damn good seal with a few leaks here and there because plastic was a bad idea for a valve cover. I only say such as my cover will leak oil at the gasket, but not in a significant amount to worry me. -
Sweet! Thanks for that!

@ogjeep has. He’s done a few.

I’m glad you brought this up. There is a really weird oddity with the keys. Some that are labeled from 70-84 are slightly different to where they won’t go into our key locks. I learned this when I got some keys off eBay that said they fit Jeeps to 84 and I thought well how different could they be. They are. If you have a set of original keys, there is a “J” stamped on the key that works with our trucks and later year Jeeps. * Also the keys that fit our trucks on eBay are very expensive and the ones floating at dealers and apparently lock smiths are cheap. *turns out only the ignition keys are stamped with a J, so the round ones for the doors are universal for all years. Only 84-85 used different ignition lock cylinders and keys.

Kinda why I’m doing a hunt as the keys dry up, all we will have the pentastar and aftermarket to use.

Ill be sending out some PMs tomorrow evening. All that I ask is to call the dealer, ask for the parts department, ask if you can get a check on an old part number, and have them verify the log that is on the key.
-
Yup! That key. I just want to see if there is any left that can be had for a cheap price.
-
Random dealers, unless there is some in your state who show to have either key. I don't know of any old lock smiths laying around but I should give that a try. None near, just be a simple phone call to a couple dealers. I don't want to overload anyone with more than 3 dealers. Which ever ones do have the AMC keys, I will call them up and buy them and who ever found them will get a key for free as a finders fee.
-
Thats a helpful detail lol. It would just entail calling a couple dealers and asking them about the part number and inquiring about what the key says on it.

Anyone want to help assist in finding NOS AMC|Jeep keys sitting around at some dealers? Currently 149(37dealers) of the ignition keys laying around and 198(16 dealers and 138 of these keys are at vintage probably with the Pentastar logo) of the door keys. I suspect most probably have the Pentastar with Jeep below it but the newest number supersede from old AMC numbers and I suspect there could be some older keys out there.

Anyone on here dabble a little in model railroads? Specifically HO scale? I only ask as I have been having to rehab and repair some engines and was wondering what tools yall use, like size soldering iron and wire trimmers?

It is recommended to download the electrical manual to help with this. It includes some diag and troubleshooting to help figure this out. You could always do it the old fashioned way and start the truck and disconnect the power cable at the battery post to see if the alt is producing power like it should.

That sounds like a big challenge. I feel like a sticker would be the only way without trying to do it the factory way. -
