Manifold install
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That’s what I thought. I didn’t know if anyone had a trick for doing this. I know it’s the same situation with the 2.5L. Patience and prying. -
Manifold install

Those are fancy. I need some of those. But what about getting the bolts in while the the exhaust manifold is too close and can’t get a bolt threaded? -
Alright my 4.0 brethren, let’s talk about manifold installation on specifically the I6 family. How are y’all getting the bolts in and get it to bolt up? About to fight with it tonight on the Eagle, I’ve got most of the top row in minus the ones are the back of the head.

Ooo metal front license plate bracket. -
I wouldnt. Toss em in and enjoy the "luxury" sound haha. Ive got those grills in both of my jeeps. The XJ hardly hits them and same with the MJ but the pass side of both do hit them.
-
Yeahhhh there’s a reason why those speaker grills are found on higher end XJs with power windows haha.
-
Ha I forgot about that one. That is an absolute quirk of these Jeeps.

What job does each of those relays have inside? -

I didn’t think I was gonna be fixing a lot of mistakes and lack of maintenance on this car. However! I found something that eases my mind on the head gasket situation. Thats a Chrysler/AMC part number. Now the J in the front tells me the head gasket has been done once. Otherwise the gasket is blown at the coolant passages and was able to mix in with the oil. -

So the engine harness, for AMC to save money was to just use a harness for the XJ into the MJ. Rather than make a whole new MJ specific engine bay harness, they just tossed the XJ one with some of the same plugs still hanging around. You need to assemble the pump and filter to the tank outside of the truck. If I recall you’ll need a long extension and I believe an 11/16 deep socket for the filter. -
Manifold gasket failure?
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
All good, just one of those coincidences hah. I shouldve anticipated this given its got 140k and probably sat for a few years, similar situation was had on my MJ when I revived her. Hell for all I know, when I put the evaporust in the block, thats probably when it started to fail. I am not looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to seeing a possible AMC headgasket. This car still has the original AMC plug wires. -
Manifold gasket failure?

You jinxed me, it is the headgasket. Found some moisture on the dipstick and a little bit of a milk shake. But not too bad, I think its been caught on time. -
Manifold gasket failure?
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I’m hoping not. Doing the valve cover alone on the Eagle was bad. Unfortunately the gasket has been serviced before and is using the single piece 4.0 gasket which the 258 is not supposed to use. There’s been a lot of questionable service done to the engine such as having platinum spark plugs and the valve cover having a cork gasket sandwich. -

Bump because I made this post last night. -
I like the first gen Wagoneer nameplate.

Eagle has developed an issue to where cyl 5 is not firing at idle and while cold. But seems to fire when warm and under higher RPMS. 258ci or 4.2L for anyone about to ask. 89MJ and I have been going back and forth on this since I discovered the issue a couple nights ago. We are now to the point where we think its the manifold gasket that has failed at cylinder 5, I found the bolts at 5E, 5I and 6I loose(I=intake E=Exhaust). Made somewhat of a difference but not noticeable enough to be pleased with such. I can tell its been serviced as it has one of those full modern gaskets like what you would find for a 4.0 vs the original gasket that seals the intake only. Can the gasket get worn out to the point where it will no longer seal correctly at a single cylinder? Trying to confirm a theory. Otherwise, from what I can tell, 5 has compression and spark. My compression tester set doesnt fit the head and so I cant confirm how good the compression is. Though it would tell me the condition of everything that makes that cylinder run. But I have had nothing but issues with that full gasket style even on my 4cyls. For your viewing pleasure, here’s what the spark plug looked like on 5 prior to cleaning: I think it looks like this because of the valve cover leaking oil and seeping down the manifold gasket and the intake sucking the oil in and basically creating this mess.

I got the valve freed up, it moves now, though still needs some help but that’s for the future. Anyways I flushed the hell out of manifold. Ran brown red for a good 5 min. Fast forward to tonight I got the valve back in, ran the eagle and it struggled to get to the middle of the gauge. -

Agreed and hopefully. I’m impressed with how plugged it all got. I shouldn’t have made the drive home when we first bought the eagle. -

Im hoping it doesn’t come down to replacing a core. Not really looking forward to such a thought. But I did run water through it and found no leaks inside. Rust chunks did come out of the core, most likely from the block.
