Sorry about the photo quality but these are from the '86 accessories brochure which covers all Jeeps of that year. Nice that they picked a Comanche for the cover. These are the main Comanche pages. -
That's a Beach B29 box. I bought the same one at Canadian Tire in the late '70s and still have it (on top of a B27 roller cabinet). I'd gladly trade all of my tool boxes in for Beach boxes. They were very popular in industries too. I bought a second roller cabinet that came out of the DeHavilland plant in Downsview where they had dozens of them. They still show up on Kijiji almost weekly. Agree with you on the "Maple Leaf" ... always good to fly the flag!

What a great build! I really enjoyed your video ... couldn't agree with you more regarding cutting with a grinder. I have a plasma cutter too and barely use it (waste of space and $$$). Love your shop too. Lots of Canadian hints in there (PA, Maximum and of course Beach boxes ... my favourite). Looking forward to seeing more!

I use one or both of a large tool bag and tool back pack. I also have a list of "specialty tools" (pullers, cheater bars, particular sockets, etc.) that I decide a head of time, as best I can, whether or not I'll need for what ever I'm after. Some of the bigger items make it into my car and when in the yard I'll go back for them if they're needed. I also take a magnetic tray for all of the screws, etc. that I take out. The yard I go most often has wheel barrows which is a big help. The last time I went I saw a guy with an axe. First time I've seen that!

I've never seen an XJ or an MJ with the fender off and the flare still on! The local yards here jack up the cars that way too. It makes me nervous every time I even LOOK under one of them.

John / Minuit - Thanks guys. Looks like my seats are coming out (doesn't look that hard to do). The problem with mine, apart that they don't fold forward at all, is that I think a previous owner had a scared cat as a passenger. They look great from the front but the backs are scratched in a way that I've never seen before.

Can you tighten the cable without taking the seats out?

HOrnbrod provided me with a link to this via another thread (thanks Don) and I've found it quite helpful. My MJ is complete and has a silver strip ... which I like. My 2 dr. XJ is a Limited. It is white and originally came with gold accents on EVERYTHING ... which I hate. The previous owner stripped all of the gold off which is exactly what I would have done. All that is left is hints of gold on the rocker cover and I'll be taking care of that soon. I'll also be adding silver badges (the gold ones were taken off). The moldings on my XJ are all black. There are small specks of gold on them so I'm sure they are the originals. The rear pieces on both sides are missing though. I have a complete set of black with red stripe moldings. Strictly a personal preference but I'd like to go with silver. I've been looking but silver stripe molding for a 2 dr. XJ seems hard to find. This thread gives me some hope that I may be able to change the colour. Quick story about XJ Limiteds ... I bought a new XJ 4 dr. in 1990. I opted for the Laredo and told the salesman that I did so because I thought the Limited looked like a "pimpmobile" with all that gold. He laughed and gave me the impression that I wasn't the first one to tell him that. I agree ... XJ's need moldings. Mine are all black and hopefully soon to be black with silver. MJ's need them too. I'm NOT trying to match the two but I do like the silver on my MJ.

Yours looks great and thanks for the link. I really like the silver. Rather than side track this thread I'll comment on my situation in the link you provided. Thanks again.

That's a good looking 2 dr. I'm curious about the black & silver rubber trim strips (above the rockers). Are they original to that year? I've been looking for a set for my '89 2 dr. and am having no luck (4 dr. yes - 2 dr. no). Also curious about the spare tire carrier ... another hard to find item.

Thanks. I wasn't too worried about the plastic caps. I have MOAB wheels on all of my Jeeps and actually prefer them without.

91 HO or Renix 4.6? Getting mixed advice.

Are rebuild kits still available? I used to get cylinders (different vehicles) sleeved and rebored and that always worked well. -
I swapped the wheels & tires on my 2WD MJ. I plan to convert it to 4WD and do a 2" lift. I thought I'd throw these on, take a picture to use for "inspiration" and then take them off. It surprised me that they actually work without rubbing! 245/75R/16's with no lift ...

Thanks Pete. I built it so that the welder itself can be easily removed (4 bolts) so I can take TO something I need to weld if necessary. I haven't finished it yet but the box at the bottom houses a timer. I'll be able to dial it to different times depending on the thickness of the metal being welded.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd bring it back to life with a few of the things I've built to make my life "easier" as the title says. Metal plate shear assisted by a trailer jack. I power the jack with a DeWalt 20V 1/2" drive impact wrench. Foot operated spot welder stand to free up an extra hand. Stretcher / Shrinker stands to again free up an extra hand. Shop press (20 ton). Parts washer. Rolling welding magnet stand. Spark plug wire tester. TJ shifter tap handle on my garage fridge.

Junkyarding today. Needs/ideas?

^^^ From the original post ... not the point of this thread but one thing I always do is check the glove box & console for the owners manual. I've found 3 for XJ's and a few for TJ's. I've also come up with a few of the original covers that they come in. I got a really neat cloth one from a Liberty that I now keep my GPS in. The junk yards I go to see no value in them and usually give them to you. -
This is not a laughing matter. We need to get to work on it! Ha Ha.

I think it would be fairly straight forward. The first decision would be whether to cut and bend the original XJ bumper to continue the factory stamping into the centre section or whether to abandon it all together. If keeping the stamped cross section making 45* cuts on the top and bottom flat sections would be easy. Using and O/A torch to soften the metal for the 45* bends could be done followed by some hammering and finishing with a flap sander should work. You could cut up an original MJ bumper (hopefully a scrap one!) for the centre section or better still use an old Fey bumper. Building a centre section from scratch wouldn't be that hard either. I think you'd also want a horizontal filler strip (diamond plate?) to bridge the gap from the bumper back to the body (more for looks than function). No doubt the XJ end caps would be a nice touch. I'm not close to that point on my MJ (other priorities for now) but I think it would be a fun and cheap project.
-
An interesting fabrication project would be to convert an XJ front bumper in to an MJ rear step bumper. It wouldn't be that hard ... it's only metal!

That sounds like the ones around here too. The one I go to most is a bit frustrating. I was there last week to pick a '89 XJ which was pretty close to what I have. It's the first one of that age that I've seen in a while. Definitely no MJ's! I got some great stuff but it's frustrating to leave things behind. Pulling engines, gear boxes, axles, etc. by yourself with only the tools you can haul in and out is bit tough. It's strictly a YOU pick and pull. What doesn't get pulled eventually gets scrapped. They won't pull anything for you or any local shops in search of parts. Tons of great parts end up getting crushed.
-
Thanks. That DOES look good and the end caps tie in nicely.

12g would be good. I was thinking 14g. I have a Fey on mine and was wondering if an original is a bit thicker. Mine's "OK" but I'd like to pick up an original. I found one that could have been restored ... but I had to take the whole truck and that was the only good part on it! I have a set of JCR bumpers off of my old XJ that I was going to use (front is easy - rear can be modified) but I'm now leaning toward stock or stock slightly modified. I won't be off roading my MJ. Basic uses will be camping, fishing, kayaking, trips to Home Depot ... and the dump of course!
