  1. When you say "the ride", is it just a wiggle or is it also a bumpety thumpety, or is it a wiggeldy wobbledy bumpety thumpety. Bigger tires and lift?? Ever change bushings? control arms? TRE's? I've done all kinds of things that have changed the ride on my XJ and now I'm working on the MJ. The XJ rides nice and smooth with a bit of clunk over bumps but no wobble or wiggle. It is tight, and I definitely had to replace several parts. The MJ is still a little rough and has a tire/wheel issue (they're old, I'm broke) but just tightening up and replacing the suspension components and going thru (not necessarily replacing) everything it's coming along nicely..
  2. I finally gave up and agreed to give/sell my 1990 XJ to my son. I know it's in good shape, I've put ~$4K into it over the years (basically less than the cost of buying new-ish anything) Engine good, 4.0 235K, Tranny good AW4 working fine, brakes, vacuum, electric, all good. Fuel system, new. Full leafs @3.5". 31's. Driveline A-OK, new joints, good angles. Problem is...there are so many XJ's around here for sale I could not get more than ~~2K for it if I sold it. Really...rust free. Mods or no mods, high mileage. Sad to see it go down the driveway, but super cool to see it go to my son who has been into the whole thing all along. Baby coming etc. etc. 4th generation Jeeper. Gen XJ... So long to the old codger.
  3. Not comepletely sure what it's called...I'll ask my grandma what she calls the one on her Jeep.
  4. You can remove/replace the inner boot. Shouldn't be pooling. Is it over filled? How did you fill it? From the top, or the side.
  5. That is one fugly brush guard for a MJ/XJ. :ack: Surely that can't be from the factory...WooF!!
  6. You may need a different Transfer Case or change the input gear with the higher spline count.
  7. In that case...use a mirror. :brows: It is set up this way on my 88 Pioneer and the 90 XJ Laredo.
  8. I got a KNOWN good AW4 for nada from a member in town on NAXJA. I was offered a decent, running AX-15 for $200. I'm going with the AW4. I have all the other parts, I'm a grandpa and tired of shifting while bouncing a baby on my knee. Nice to find stuff laying around but money's tight and old Jeeps are readily available. You can't take a leak around here without wetting the tire of an XJ, they're everywhere.
  9. Here are the relays in the "relay center" labled. I thought this might be from the 90 XJ I don't see a fuel pump fuse here...but it is from my 88 MJ...no rear wiper fuse either AFAIK there is no fuse for the fuel pump in this block...there may be a fusible link at the starter relay byt I don't know which one it is. There is a shared ground behind the drivers side taillight that is used by the fuel pump...pop out your tail light and see if there is a ground (black wire) in the bucket screwed to the sheetmetal . Shine it up and replace. They do get crusty back there.
  10. I went to look at a 99 S-10 topper. It was about an inch short all the way around. Both sides - 1" too short, each side Length was good - SWB Height at cab was 20.5" - MJ is 21.5" It'd be usable, but I like things to line up right. I also looked at on on a 94 Ranger SWB - it was right on (well, maybe 1/4" too narrow.) Unfortunately it was a POS.
  11. That's what she said!!! :brows:
  12. It is not at all hard to remove/replace the isolater. Removing the coil spring is a bit of a task though, and you have to remove the spring to get the isolater out...so while you're in there...you may as well do it all, new isolaters, both sides. It'll ride a bit (and I emphasize a BIT) smoother.
  13. Manual tranny?? Is your clutch slipping? Automatic?? Is your fluid nice n' red and at correct level?? Does your CAT rattle?
  14. I'd buy it and fix it depending on how hard it got hit and what kind of shape the engine and running gear are in. If the uni-frame is ****ed up, no...if not yes. $700, meh, a bit steep for a fixer but what the heck, it sure would make a good project. Especially if you don't have to futz with the main stuff. Fenders, header panel and bumper could be done in a weekend. Don't blame the truck for the owner being a putz.
  15. I have a long bed steel skid plate...unfortunately I have a short bed truck. I thought I could get it to fit...and I can with a bit of cutting and welding, but all the mounting spots are different. If yours is a LWB I'd let it go for $50 + shipping (which would likely be more than $50). It's in xlnt shape, absolutly no rust, painted on outside, herc'd on inside. If you're interested (or anyone else is) PM me.
  16. I live 10 miles from the Sierra Nevada brewery. I like their darker beers. IPA, Porter, Stout. Their Pale Ale tastes like horse piss...to me...but it is uber popular around here. It's like tri-tip...everybody says WOW...but I prefer a good rib eye. Nice to be able to go down the hill and do a sampler for $5. Regular summertime drinkin' beer...Tecate
  17. When I took mine off to paint I just rolled them up and off with my fingers and thumbs. When I put them back on I just positioned them and tapped 'em back on with a rubber mallet. the little clips slide back n forth and may be a bit off when putting back on. I had to slide them side to side a bit to get them to grab. I'm still missing one on the XJ that I ripped off on a tree branch, that side leaks. The XJ ones, being longer are more of a PITA.
  18. Thanks for that information. I thought I had to use the flexplate from the newer tranny...now I know what I'm looking for...and why. I have a TC coming from a member on NAXJA. I'll check NAPA for the flexplate. Thanks.
  19. It HAS to be the suspension...somewhere. Check those drop shackle angles on both sides. Are they the same. Measure from the center of the wheel to the flare instead of the ground. The surface is relative, distance from the wheel is more telling. I'd check for a missing or broken leaf...or maybe a missing or collapsed coil isolator. Then start looking at your "uni-frame". Look between the cab and bed for a bend or break in the frame rail. Look at your front leaf mounts too, bushings??
  20. I need either a good source for, or someone with a Torque Converter for an AW4 91-96 and flexplate for same. I have a known well maintained and operating AW4 (140K miles) without the above that I want to swap in to replace my BA-10...which is failing me. What do they run used, or re-man'd. I also posted in the WTB section.

  22. IMHO there is no special CA markup...there's just more people and less OLD vehicles...so people think they're "rare". Course, since my truck is 24 yrs. old and has virtually zero rust issues it's likely worth more than the same year vehicle from PA or MI, etc. Yes, there are no corner lights on the corners.
  23. Well, sorry bro. I'd pass on it altogether. Here's why. Accident - wreck, whatever. Along with that it's admittedly got an alignment issue. I have 31's on both Jeeps, poor alignment is not caused by putting 31" tires on it. Paint job - since it's a California Jeep I'd doubt he's covering anything more than surface rust, but unless you are happy with the paint, you'll want to paint it, and that will cost $$. He's a mechanic - That's not necessarily a good thing. He could snow you on lots of things...and charge you for it. BA-10 - I've had mine for 2 years...it runs fine but the tranny is definitely the weak point. I'm polishing up my spare AW4 as we speak for a swap in the near future. 2 wheel drive - It may sound like an easy thing to do but if you plan to use this off-road you're going to want 4x. Converting it is not as easy as it sounds. It'll cost $$ and time. Like I said I have 2K into mine, minimum, and still more to come. Not to make it an off-road beast...just to make it a bit better than stock with some extra stuff. The girlfriend analogy is perfect...don';t marry the first one that drops her top for you.
  24. Is it a 4x4 or 2x4? What is the tranny? 5 spd. or automatic. BA-10 bad. AW4 good. Gear ratios? 3.07? $2500 is a bit steep, but it's clean looking. I got mine for $400, but I have 2K into it The front header panel looks newer...was it in a wreck? or just modified? Does the camper come with it??
  25. :dunno: I thought it was just HO's in general. I was trying to go a whole day without learning something, I guess this day is shot. :dunce:
