Fraying on the inside and not tracking on the fan pulley? You need to take a closer look at your harmonic balancer. Sounds like it's coming apart. The inner metal around the crank should be flush with the outer metal weight if it isn't it's starting to separate. Also, is the belt off track on the harmonic balancer?

Not that I've ever done this, but don't you just have to lift/remove the wire from the starter relay/solenoid? Mac...

I suppose whoever replaced the water pump could have left some old gasket material causing the pump to be off kilter. When I look at the back of the water pump pulley it has been contacting the water pump housing on 2 sides. To me this would mean the pulley is somewhat oval or cupped a little or the water pump bearing is truly bad even though it seems fine. Also, if the bearing was bad the pulley would have made contact all the way around and not just 2 sides. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate a new or used pulley yet. When I do I'll trace them on paper to see if the old one has warped. To the naked eye the pulley looks okay, but to the naked eye from 50 feet I have a rust free Comanche. Mac...

Those parts are available from NAPA or NAPA on line. The complete harness is 2 pieces and includes all the vacuum line tubes. That vacuum harness splits in half. If you look at it there are some clips that hold it together. Each side is around $22.00 if I remember correctly. I've never been able to find just the nipple that goes into the valve cover and with age it becomes plugged and brittle. Also, if you buy it, heat the nipple up a little to soften the rubber because that plastic tube breaks quite easily. Also when you heat it you'll be able to spin the nipple on the tube and get a better alignment. Mac...

It looks like it'd be a rough ride. :jump: Guessing you're going to have to drop the front end right out of your rig to get those out. :hmm:

What are the front springs from?

There is no in or out adjustment on any pulleys. The only adjustment is on the power steering pump and that is to adjust the belt tension. Mine continues to jump track. The water pump seems good, there is no in or out movement or looseness. It spins true with no wobble. Same with the fan pulley. I am now suspecting the water pump pulley itself may be bent out of round on the back side.

I don't see any way to adjust the water pump pulley. It just bolts against the flange on the end of the water pump. Could you tell me where this adjustment is?

I doubt I could even get a hammer in there let alone swing it. You must have had the radiator out or the engine out.

Yeah, that was me that had the harmonic balancer separating. I replaced it with a new one from NAPA ($52.00) and a new seal ($15.00). The belt is still jumping off the track at the harmonic balancer. The belt starts to wobble past the fan pulley then jumps track on the harmonic balancer. The balancer was separated as I shown in the picture, but there is more going on then just that. The fan pulley doesn't look like it's bent. I took the shroud off the fan to get a good look, but can't see what's causing it to jump track. The belt is also wearing a groove in the timing cover so if yours is off track, better fix it fast or you could end up replacing the timing cover. When the belt is on correctly I can hear a ticking sound from somewhere? The ticking goes away when the belt jumps track. I see some threads that say the radiator has to be removed to replace the balancer, but I was able to do it without removing the radiator. The hard part was putting the new balancer and seal in. The experts say you need a harmonic balancer installer. The price of this was anywhere from $35.00 to over $100.00. I went to the hardware store and bought a 3" and 2 1/2" bolt (1/2"x20). The 3" bolt and a 1 3/'4" socket was used to push the new seal in. The 2 1/2 bolt was used to push the balancer on. The bolt for the balancer is too short to start the balancer onto the crank. You can wedge a screw driver between one of the spokes on the balancer and the timing cover to keep the engine from turning tighten to 80 fp. Switch to the original crank bolt once the balancer is in far enough to thread the bolt in. You should be able to thread it in quite a way by hand so you don't risk stripping the threads. Now, if I can just figure out why the new belt is still jumping off the balancer. Mac...

I've had this problem 3 different times on 3 different vehicles. None of them a Jeep, yet. It has always been the ignition control module in the distributor.

Pour in as much antifreeze as you can. Let engine warm up. Shut engine off. Go have a cup of coffee. Come back and finish filling. -
Remove 2 bolts/screws from the top front of the window. Remove Door panel. Remove inner and outer window wipes. remove bolt at bottom of window frame. Roll window down and remove single bolt Torx, or Hex nut on some models that holds glass to window regulator (This step may not be needed and you can try to get the frame out with just the window rolled all the way down.) Tilt the top of the frame back and lift out through opening.

That sounds kind of dangerous. What I did was screw a bolt into one of the puller holes then attached the 19MM socket on a breaker bar. I wedged a crowbar between the socket and the puller bolt and squeezed them together. I wasn't sure what a bad HB looked like since I didn't have a good one to comare it to. Here's what mine looked like. There is about 1 1/4 inch offset between the crank side of the HB and the pulley side. There shouldn't be any from the pictures I googled.

I climbed under to have look. the harmonic balancer is separating as many suspected. Now the big question is how to get the bolt off? It's an automatic so I need to keep the engine from turning. I agree this is the time to change the seal.

Thanks guys, judging by the puddle of oil and oil on the swaybar the harmonic balancer is the problem. Doesn't look damaged and I haven't crawled under there yet, but I'm guessing the nut is missing. I have a spare off my parts Comanche if it's the balancer itself. Mac...

The serpentine belt on my 90 4.0 liter (Air, P/S) keeps tracking to the inside of the Crank pulley. I'm sure it's some kind of alignment problem since It still does it with a new belt. The old belt was good. Anyone ever seen this before? I don't see anyway to align the pulleys. I also don't see any that aren't aligned. I can't crank the engine and see the pulleys at the same time, but it doesn't take anymore then one quick crank for the belt to ride out of the track on the crank. A little history. When I bought this comanche the P/O put water in the radiator and when I started it on a freezing day the water pump was frozen and it took out the serpentine belt. I'm guessing that when the belt went it must have pulled something out of alignment but don't see anything obvious.

I went with the same Wheel for my CJ7 except in black. The Chrome horn button is different too. Here it is before I installed it in the CJ. I can't remember if I bought it online from Quadratec or Morris 4x4. It was fairly cheap (price) but good quality. I had to buy the horn kit separately. Mac...

I thought the same exact thing when I saw that pile.... see if the manche will make it!!!! And send pics!!! My 'manche is 2WD for now, but I'd give it a go with my CJ7 if I didn't love life more... I don't think the pile would would stay put. Mac...

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I run my own web server and the little tab on the Ethernet cable broke off and the cable works itself out. Replacing it is on my todo list. Mac...

I have 2 brothers that married 2 sisters from Reed City. Do you know any of the Bruske family? They have a farm out that way. I'm from Manton but was transplanted to Grand Rapids, but left my roots up there.. A lot of logging analogy.... ;) Mac..

I had the same idea... No keys.. :(

I have a swarm of loggers cutting down part of my woods. I'm going to really miss those trees but they had to go to preserve the ones they're not cutting. I was getting root rot and needed to stop that and thin out some of the mature red pines. I see a lot of opportunity to get muddy... until the new trees get planted.. See that pile of wood.. My blond wife asked me if they were going to leave that pile of wood there. I said sure they are. They paid me to cut down the trees, you can't expect them to haul them away too... So, how deep is the snow in Manton Michigan on March 7, 2010? Mac...

I have the same stereo (Just bought from Wildman). It actually says jeep on the cassette door. I have an antenna lead socket where your graphic equalizer plug is. I see the antenna socket is on the graphic equalizer. I was able to buy a new connector for the back of the radio. I think the place I got the connector listed the connector as Chrysler/Jeep radio connector. Mac...
