  1. That Dakota bell housing is a PITA to find, I used Hollander parts to get the Hollander parts number , 3 digest a dash then the rest of the numbers. ( example 300-05428B) . It’s in the web address when you find the right part. I’ll run that number on the ebay and other places looking for a junk yard or reseller listing it. I got lucky when somebody listed it by the mopar casting number didn’t know what it was. You can put a lot of options place of the 2.8. 3.4 is the best option for drop in simplicity. Part of the problems were bad carburetor and exhaust. Fix at least the carb. Now my 2.8 I’ve beat to hell and back and it never failed, sounds crappy and the compression is not great, leaks all kinds of oil, but will not die. Probably not the original engine as it had a oil sender and temp sender meant for gauges my wagoner didn’t have, I had to put over 150k miles on the hunk of junk driving from the west back to my folks in Florida. Now that I think about it, that was kind of crazy how far and how long a road trip I would drive that Jeep. Used to take in to the desert and into the mountains any free time I had. Didn’t think a thing of it failing on the trail or the ride home. Never had that Jeep towed, didn’t have the money for one, kept some tools and a few necessities with it. Drive shaft exploded many miles from home and it drove home with a crimped fuel line and front drive shaft. That’s my Jeep and why I bought other jeeps, still own it but hasn’t been on the road because I’m stalled doing the engine swap I intended to finish years ago, I fire it up every couple of months but the hydraulic clutch took a dump so it’s been stuck in the side drive way. Still my baby. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  2. For no start: One of the issues can be bad battery cables, when I first got my old 2.8 xj the battery and battery cables were crap. Replaced the battery to have a random no start but have plenty of power. If it was running the weak @$$ alternator kept up with the power needs. Replaced all the cables and it got power to the starter just fine. Still fine after all these years. For the 2.8 one of the upgrades using the original set up was alternators off a Pontiac with the same clocking. It ups the amp from 55 to something better, I can’t remember which alternator I got now. Since the 2.5 and 4.0 use similar alternator it could be a possibility. Of course there a kits to add much better gm alternators Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  3. Should look about like this if it’s still factory parts Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  4. I think that’s the ac condenser . As I remember it’s a small two inch wide and about as long as the radiator Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  5. melting the plug used to be blamed on the draw from the headlights, solution would be a headlight harness kit to take the main load off the factory harness. With led lights available I don’t know if these old assumptions are true. I do know on the Jeeps I put a cheap headlight harness connecting them to the battery for the main power draw the headlight switches seemed to stay cool. The 1984-91 headlight switch plug are different from 92 up, there is a 92 up plug with harness pigtail available What I had to do was compare the 92 up plug to the older one and cut off the piece that wasn’t needed for the 84-91 switch. If your dash harness is newer this may not matter.
  6. With this all I can’t see what engine it is, if it’s v6 I’ll have a mechanical fuel pump on the drivers side of the engine block. That fuel filter is in the back of the carburetor, where the fuel line goes in, sort of stone like. It’s a junk carburetor anyway. I’d check if it actually pumping anything on the 4cyl I’m not familiar enough to tell you what to check Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  7. I thought the answer would Chrysler repackaged the 1990 ecu to clear out old 1990 stock but if cruiser said timed differently it has to be a one off Jeep offered as the new HO 4.0 rolled out. I’m curious what it will do. The old renix computers can sometime be picked up cheap, well for one they sat on a shelf for 20 years and the other is some sellers read bendix and assume it’s for the abs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  8. Nice. Strangely enough when I got my old 2.8 XJ it reminded me of my grandpa and his old trucks. The old XJ was old truck like, closer to the 1940-50s size trucks and basic mechanics. The smells, gear oil, stale gas, burning motor oil, musty air from the vents. It was a lot like his old trucks on the farm. The newer MJ/XJ with fuel injection and 4.0 are not that different but for some reason the old carbureted jeeps feel so much closer to the trucks and classic designs they were based on. That and at times they are grumpy as hell. :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  9. I want to say the early interiors (84-86-87) had the correct color red you are looking for. There is a darker maroon later in production. If you can find it on eBay for a decent price grab it. I used to hit the junk yards for all the trim pieces I needed, but most of the amc era xj/mj are crushed already. There is a junk yard in California which specializes in Jeeps including Cherokees and MJ, they might have the color pieces you need. If you looking for black trim pieces like shifter bezel I don’t think it matters what year it out of it’s probably the same or close . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  10. True. They had it 12-13 years before finding a sucker, um, I mean buyer. Once the new dash and engines harness were hooked up I was amazed at how much started working right again. Voltage gauge was always off but now is pretty close to accurate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  11. Depends on what you are trying to do. Fuse boxes are probably 84-94-96ish. That if you just need the plastic holder and your wires and leads are ok. If you want to swap a new box in with the rest of the dash harness then you need to find the right year to match the bulk head plug in the fire wall. From what I can tell, this could be off a little if someone know better please correct it. 84-85 xj are unique for the old amc style bulk head. 86 was the start of the renix era even though the 2.8 v6 was still an option. 86-90 seem to have the same firewall bulk head plug. 91- through 94-95 I know look the same, far as the bulkhead plugs connecting engine harness to dash harness. 1996 might be the same plug but they added OBD 2 to it, not sure about using those years Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  12. Lucky to find it, the 80’s xj mj are impossible to find in junk yards around here in the south. Took years of searching to find a junk yard in the north west that had a 1986 2.8 federal emissions engine harness. Just about perfect shape. According to the parts tag they had it on a shelf since 2003, guess it explains why they’d jump at selling it for my offer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  13. Oh you have a 1986, is it the 2.5 or 2.8? Don’t think it matters but The 2.8 Definitely has to have the wiring harness from the AC donor, the 2.8 engine harness is ac and none ac as well. My 85 xj was a none ac high altitude set up. Long story short previous owners butchered the engine harness and left a master clutch leak and windshield leak to ruin the fuse box. Got lucky finding a 1986 2.8 engine harness which looks like the standard renix era bulk head plug, used a renix Cherokee dash harness to complete it on the inside, now I have the plugs for ac controls on the dash side and the leads for ac and other related plugs on the engine harness. If I swap the dash air box out it’ll be set up to retrofit ac. Unfortunately for these jeeps to add AC to them you have to retrofit everything from a jeep that had it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  14. You have to source the AC harness dash and engine. At least the early xj/mj had specific harnesses for ac and none ac. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  15. Should be Aisin for that year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  16. Rochester sounds like the Chevy 2.8 v6 Jeep used. Not sure what the 2.5 engine has I’d think it have to be whatever the renix system is. If it’s is the 2.8 V6 honestly that carburetor is junk one of the Weber DGES 38 conversion kits would be better in the long run. Far as parts for that carb they should be around if not in the Jeep parts catalogue then look under the 1984-5 Chevy s10 parts catalogue Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  17. That bell housing has the CPS hole. Still can be set up either way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  18. Biggest difference if the holes/reluctor for the CPS sensor. I think the clutch kit may be the same for aisin transmission Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  19. Starting 1986 2.5 is a renix engine so it’ll be that era fly wheel. I believe the 2.5 1985 is carbureted. Looks like 87-90 wrangler 2.5 and 86-90 xj/mj are the same flywheel I remember something about the flywheel being a PITA to source. Worse that the 2.8 V6 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  20. Other big leak is the oil filter housing . Have to lift the motor up and possibly remove engine mount Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  21. The odds are it should be the one piece with bigger crank journals. But being a 2.8 god knows what’s actually in there If you can get the block # on the passenger side under the are near the exhaust manifold , second location is on top under the bracket for the power steering on top of the motor. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  22. Two styles in the gm 2.8. If if the later styles it’s a one piece seal you can access from the back by dropping the transmission. If it’s the older style it’s a two piece rubber seal, I think it is closer to the 4.0 but cat remember Btw gm changed to the one piece seal in 1985, so you 1986 MJ should be a one piece design but if the motor has been swapped or gm sold amc a older block who knows what actually there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  23. Rockauto has the 2WD/RWD calipers listed, if you don’t like buying from them online try the caliper part numbers on amazon and see if they have them. I can see they are different from the 4WD caliper but I’m not sure how different. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  24. Just a thought, the 86 radiator is dead simple, metal tank looks like any other Jeep or tractor radiator of the 70’s and 80s some of the aftermarket that say oem have plastic thank and probably not really to spec. I have noticed a lot of aluminum radiator available that might fit, could be an alternative. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  25. Holley # 0-8007 (390 cfm) I think you might have to add some shims to the hood. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
