  1. Solid advice. Thanks guys! I'll try to take a look in the morning and see what I can do.
  2. That was my thought as well. The driver side is completely dry though. I have to be missing something
  3. I tried searching for the answer to this, but I've had no luck. I tried starting my truck today, and it wouldn't start. So I opened the hood, and noticed gasoline sprayed around the passenger side firewall area. I'm at work right now, so i havn't had a chance to really check it out. Does anyone have any clue what could be going on? If any of you have seen my build thread, you probably read that the PO put gasoline in the master cylinder. So I'm terrified about what else he did.
  4. Well look at that, I learned something new today.
  5. Just curious, what is the group consensus on painting the grill/headlight surrounds to match body color? Like how Zone Offroad did with their comanche. Personally, I think it looks great. Kinda afraid to do it though, because I love the classic look. Although, my truck already has the wrong grill. It's an ugly chrome now, and I very much dislike chrome. I guess worst case, I could paint it black if I ended up not liking it. thoughts/comments? ps. here is a picture of the Zone truck because I know everyone hates threads without pictures. lol
  6. much appreciated.
  7. Anyone know where I can find a set of headlight frames online? The tabs on mine broke.
  8. So it's been a while since I've updated this build thread. Mostly because the work on the truck came to a screeching halt in the spring. Work and family took over all my free time. Now, since I'm back in college, my work schedule is a little lighter, so I have a good bit more free time. Man, I'm missing all my overtime though. anyways, let me get caught up here. One of the last things I did to the truck before my hiatus, I painted it this horrible purple color. (what was I thinking?) the truck was running well, but never made it to the street. (probably a good thing, considering the UGLY paint job :rotf: ) Over the summer it started having trouble starting. It had a really long, slow, crank. I would soon find out that my starter was dying. fast forward to a week or so ago, truck will not start. Figured out it was the starter. Pulling the starter ended up being a huge PITA. I had to buy a long extension and a knuckle to get it off. So currently I'm awaiting pay day, so I can order a new starter. In the meantime, I'm working on some small stuff here and there. I can't stand the UGLY purple anymore, so I'm testing out some new paints. here is my favorite so far. I also finally went to install my headlights, but ran into a small road block As you can see, the passenger side went fairly smoothly. Driver side not so much. I need to order a new headlight frame thing (the chrome thing that holds the headlight in), and a turn signal. Lastly, I'm trying to figure out how the rear bumper brackets mount to the frame. Since mine is a LWB its different from what I've seen other people do on here. If anyone has any tips for this, I would greatly appreciate it.
  9. finally. Now to find a cheap replacement.
  10. disregard. I figured out how to use the search bar! :rotf:
  11. So I took some measurements, and it looks like a gen 2 dakota bench can fit in a comanche. Has anyone ever done this? I'm sure it will require some fabrication for brackets and such. I loved the bench in my wifes dakota, but since it slung a rod, I'm now just using it for parts.
  12. I'll try to snap a picture tomorrow. they are parallel with the starter. a small one near the bottom and a slightly larger one on top of the starter
  13. Nope. I'm thinking maybe a long socket extension with a knuckle on the end of it. A wrench would work if I could turn it when I get it on there.
  14. this is what I'm dealing with. Hopefully it will make it a little clearer. ps. please ignore the oil leak. thats the next project.
  15. Nope. I didn't realize it bolted vertically. I guess the exhast has to come off to pull the starter? seems a little odd. lol
  16. Let me apologize in advance if this thread is in the wrong place. I bought a toolbox for the comanche. Unfortunately it has no key, so i have no way to lock it. Has anyone ever replaced the locking mechanism on a toolbox? Is it fairly simple? I won't be keeping anything valuable in there, so if this is going to be a huge PITA, I will just live with not being able to lock it. It would be nice to not have to worry about someone stealing my jumper cables or gas can though.
  17. So today I'm working on the truck again. I was removing the starter, and its STUCK. I removed the bolts, and wires holding it, and it still won't come out. I tried prying it off with a flathead screwdriver, and hitting it with a hammer and a block of wood, and it won't budge. It obviously has been on there since it rolled off the factory line in 86. Anyone have any tips for getting it off? I have it soaking in some liquid wrench right now.
  18. Also should probably note, when connecting a jumper cable to the starter, the starter got really hot.
  19. So, it's been a while since i've posted here. Mostly because I have had no time to work on the truck. Full time student while also working a full time job. Since today was labor day I had some time to mess around with it. I hook up a good battery to it, get in, turn the key over, and... just a loud click from the starter. So I know I have an electrical problem somewhere. I know the motor is not seized up. The truck has new plugs, wires, distibuter, and cap, so I'm going to assume the problem is not in those components. Battery is reading at ~12.55 so I think its OK. Battery cables are old, and need to be replaced, but I don't believe them to be the issue right now. Which leads me to thinking the problem is the starter. So naturally, I tap it with a hammer a few times, try again, and nothing. Just the click. Then, I connect a jumper cable from the positive terminal, to the starter, and again, just a click. It did not spin. I may very well be wrong, but I believe this means the starter is bad. Am i correct in my assumption? Did I overlook something? The truck is an 86 2.5l auto 4x4. On a somewhat related note, I now have a 95 dakota sitting in my yard with a bad motor. Does anyone have any clue if the starter from it will work on the comanche? Or any other parts from it that may be a fairly simple swap over?
  20. No, that's not where the ground connection goes. That's where the positive cable attaches to the solenoid (which is mounted on the starter motor). You said it was just turning over -- how much did you crank it? A lot? Yes. I was trying to get it to start for several minutes The starter motor is the highest current draw of anything in the vehicle. That's why it has the fattest wire leading to it. You're not supposed to crank an engine for more than a few seconds, so you don't (1) run down the battery, and (2) overheat the cables and perminals. I'd say you overheated the cables and terminals. Now ... the problem is to figure out why it didn't start. Probably yet another bad CPS. LOL

  22. So maybe a bad ground on the battery cables?
  23. Today I went out to start the mj. It wasn't starting, just turning over. So I popped the hood and noticed white smoke coming from under the oil filter. Upon further inspection I noticed something down there glowing red hot. It was dark and rainy so I couldnt check it out any further. Does anyone have any clue what this could be?
  24. I've decided to replace them. Not sure which route I will go yet.
  25. I'm replacing my radiator, but I'm having some trouble with the transmission cooler lines. They are pretty rusty, and no matter what I do, when I try to loosen them, they start to bend. I've tried heat and penetrating fluid. Is there a trick to this?
