Electrolysis for rust removal
Manche757 replied to Manche757's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The following pics are from the same 1942 WWII Jeep (or Ford?) as the first pics above. It is hard to believe that the parts above and additional ones shown below are from a 76 year old Jeep. His mix and methodology is: "I used water and Arm & Hammer washing soda ($4 for a large box at Food Lion or Walmart). It was about 3 tablespoons per gallon of water which basically makes the water more conductive and a car battery charger." -
Factory Spare Tire Jack Question
Manche757 replied to AZJeff's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Something tells me that someone here knows if a jack from a 95 zj is the same for MJs. Are the jacks for 86 thru 92 the same? -
Thanks for the replies. I like the way some of you put words together. Like this: "I like bucket seats in a go-fast machine, but prefer the bench seat in my Comanche." or this: "I’d be interested in this as well, my drivers side is finally sagging and I prefer the bench for the wife, dog, and I." Minuit, curiosity is killing me, what are you hiding up there? Why in and out several times?

Permutations and combinations
Manche757 replied to Eagle's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I assume you have checked the frame and found it in good order. 4.0L 5 speed 2WD. If you are "saving" a MJ, are you expecting to run it in the surf on a salt water beach? On salt covered winter roads? Hopefully it will be parked then, even if not in a garage. Sell the 4WD to one of the chopemup young guys. You will end up with a better truck. Clear the garage a little and make a buck. -

You have a pic of what your are calling hard foam? I am convinced you know more of a complete history of Comanches than anyone else, including Jeep Kaiser, AMC, and Chrysler all put together. That is not as outlandish as it might initially seem. A relative had worked in the GM tech center testing prototypes. Less would be known about new installs than you know about what was installed in Comanches. Historical perspective of course. By chance do you know if the thick headliner in a F150 (or similar) could be installed in the Comanches? And with a source of decent headliner shells all but gone from junkers, is there no source for new ones? A wag (wild asse guess) tells me that you know off top that Grand Cherokee wheels will fit a MJ?

Thanks for that! That is the original seat frame? Replace any ribbon springs? rokinn, see above, added some springs and tied them. Maybe he will post a pic of the in process. I am surprised vinyl at that age could be restitched without ripping. You have any pics of your in process esp before you had the seat covers put back on. Increasing the density/thickness is of interest. Kinda, sorta like the F150 seats. Any kin?

Come on guys, both genders included. We are dying here riding on our ratty bench seats. Cardboard stuffing to the bench and next the seat of our pants. No CC perfectionist have done remarkable work to them? I see the awesome work done by the metalheads. In particular by the Comanche Metalheads. A moniker of merit for those producing great metal restoration and improvements. If Chuck Liddell paints his toenails pink, Rosie Greer knits, Mohammed Ali floats like a butterfly, are the CC tough guys done in by some foam rubber, ribbon springs and seat covers? Share a few pics!

1987 Base Ignition Switch
Manche757 replied to railroad sam's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Great diagrams, Cruiser -
That was some shocking overnight exchange to an electrical thread from the esteemed Comanche Club executive committee. A few quotes are not identified to the guilty: "the distance between two mounting holes are 4” apart. ... mounted in regard to orientation" Then this reply: " mounting holes are inline." Then this: " You may only need to raise one end.... anal about keeping the holder level" My god, what about the holdee? From another: "I don't' really understand what's being discussed here.........but...........Here's what I did to add protection " Protection is good. Question of the day: What causes those ANaL fuses to blow?

More starter problems...
Manche757 replied to Wounded_Fighter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Worn ignition switch. Contacts making intermittent connections. Wounded see your A and B in first post -
A plugged screen could cause shift delays but from what you expressed, you are way past that. Hydraulic fluid is not being released to other gear valve. It is not likely to leave you stranded. You just have to wait for the fluid to be released or pissing. FYI, a successful Aamco shop here tries to solve a transmission problem 3 times then throws in the towel and overhauls it. Google valve body and see what you are up against and why it is big bucks. Someone wanting automatic on a Comanche is alien to me but there are threads here for some owners wanting to do just that. Check for one. Probably not mucho bucks and you will be done with automatic Jeep problems that ran through the 90s. You might hate me for busted knuckles installing clutch and thus and such but your C will be more fun to drive. And errrr don't destroy the banged up 87. A highly noxious thought.

JDRitchey. Any progress? What you describe is shifting delay. Valve body issue. Local Chrsyler/Jeep dealer guys call it the pissing valve. It is not releasing hydraulic fluid to shift to another gear. Big bucks. Not the easiest fix but replace with 5 speed. Much more fun to drive.

Electrolysis for rust removal
Manche757 replied to Manche757's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here are a couple of links he sent of the process. He did not create the videos. Another link: http://www.rickswoodshopcreations.com/miscellaneous/rust_removal.htm If you have used the process yourself, jump on the thread with your pics. -
No questions here but thought this would be an interesting read. A friend in another state takes a break from his day job by restoring a WWII era Jeep. The beginning of all Jeeps that would come later. He has used electrolysis to remove rust from parts that may or may not be available. It is amazing how well it works. On parts small enough to fit in a container anyway.

The rust on the floor is active but doesn't look structural. Mind taking a few pics and explaining how you will arrest it before priming painting?

I have bench seats in an 87 and 89 which I prefer. I can not find a thread on repairing sagging ribbons springs on the driver side and reupholstering/upgrading. The seats and original seat covers seem pretty whimpy for noble little trucks. Anyone have experience/suggestions for keeping bench seats but tweaking them up?
