Broken Key in Ignition 89MJ
Manche757 replied to Manche757's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The broken off piece was in a crevice on the floor. Glad it was not in cylinder. The key has Jeep on one side; American Motors on the other. Chrome over brass. -
Broken Key in Ignition 89MJ
Manche757 replied to Manche757's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The second key went in without any trouble and turned and started the truck without any trouble. Could that have happened, if the ridged part of the shaft wasn't pushed out the other end of the cylinder? -
I was leaving the gym at 6:20am this morning and thought I had a jump on the day. I put the key in the ignition and the tumblers hung a little as they often do. It was dark out and only one of the interior lights work. I fiddled with it a little and pulled the key out and saw that it was broken off on the smooth part of the shaft; all of the ridges were in the cylinder. I had not forced it but I think it was an original 30 year old key. I thought hell, I will call a cab. Have the truck towed to a mechanic and hope he can get to it today. Another cab to pick it up when finished. Much of the day blown. But..... I keep a spare key hidden on the truck and thought what the hell I will give it a try. I was amazed that the second key went in without any hesitation. I assume the other end of the cylinder is open and the broken shaft was pushed out the other end. Is the inside end of the cylinder open for that very reason?

If diesel gels at 20F, how do you get it to flow from the tank even if the block is warm when it is well below zero?

Alexia, many thanks to you and Krytro, as our cyber gurus, for keeping the CC up and running. You earn every penny of the exuberant salary that Pete (does not) pay you. Kudos!

I believe per your link that the ship is in Philadelphia. After reading your post, I looked up the SS United States. Several groups have tried to save it but funding has fallen short. Beside being a huge ship and setting the cross Atlantic speed record that has not been broken, there were other interesting things about the ship. Although the speed record still holds, previous written histories stated that it was only going about half throttle. I looked for that yesterday and did not find that, but I did find that it eventually came out that the actual speed was wiithheld. Although privately owned, it was subsidized by the US government. Its construction in 1950-1952 came soon after WWII. The US government interest was to be able to convert it quickly to a troop transport if the need arose. Korea was heating up. I do not know what condition it is in today but based on yesterday's read, it is stripped but not scrapped, having been towed across the Atlantic and back. Looking for a way to spend all that money you made as a hedge fund manager?

The blue one is one of three that you have?

I am sure you are not happy keeping that fine looking MJ locked up waiting for the corn to germinate. The truck must be blue about being locked up in a dark jail. Why don't you sell it to me for what you have in it?

The ship was towed to Norfolk VA, from nearby Newport News Shipyard with an uncertain future. Finally, it was auctioned and towed to Turkey and the Ukraine for asbestos removal and was to be scrapped after that. Pier fees were in arrears. Before the forced auction to pay pier fees, it was opened for tours before it left Norfolk, VA. I went on the one of the tours that were held over a few days (or maybe one day; too long ago to recall). Dehumidifiers had been running and kept the inside in decent shape. It never was a luxury liner; it was a passenger ship built too late for the times to come.

I have a hunch you did not travel alone at age 4. What brought your family from Scotland to San Diego?

Did you leave the awesome blue MJ safely locked in a garage during all the ice and snow?

kryptro, thanks for that. I was surprised that they are not more than they are. I am likely to favor the new replacement rims than the used reconditioned ones. What's your opinion? I do like JEEP stamped in the rims and don't think the new replacement ones have that. In either case, they look ready to go without cleanup, clear coating, and thus and such.

Has anyone purchased rims from WAC? I am interested in the 1512s. https://www.wheelsandcaps.com/c-2283-oem-aluminum-alloy-wheels_jeep-comanche.aspx

Go to a walk in clinic. Medicare and extended insurance will pay. They can see if there is any redness indicating infection and check your vitals from uneven hearbeat or other issue. We all have a vested interested in your well being. Although you are probably a great guy, we really need the benefit of your mechanical knowledge.

Great job keeping your truck in such fine shape. Nice wheels; are those original?

Well that sucks. Literally. We have not had enough of you, so don't go getting any ideas. We can't be losing someone highly thought of.

Persistent Squirrel Problem.......
Manche757 replied to Archaeor's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Couple of questions: dasbulliwagen seems German; what does it mean? I see you have 352,000 miles on an '87 MJ; is that 2.5 original? -
Persistent Squirrel Problem.......
Manche757 replied to Archaeor's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Squirrels are persistent. Once they know where they want to go they will not give up. A few years back I had trouble with squirrels in my attic. I called the city and asked what was the best way to kill them. In half shock the woman said the city is an animal sanctuary and it is against the law to kill them. I told that story to a Catholic priest and without missing a beat, he said "poison peanuts that will kill them". Fyi, rabbits are known for chewing car wires also. If woodpeckers are banging a hole in your house, they will not quit either. -

A thread I read on a Cherokee site discussed adding ABS to XJs. Cost was about $850-$900 in parts but there were comments about needing a new axle. The country solution in the '60s was to haul a half load of sand in the back of a pickup truck for the winter to stabilize the rear end. Anyone here added ABS to an MJ?

Cool Hand Luke. famous lines: "What we have here is a failure to communicate" "Get your dirt out of my hole." The Dirty Dozen. Charles Bronson was the quintessential tough guy with few words. Lawrence of Arabia, the number one epic movie of all time should be in there too.

I need to replace the stick shift boot on both an 87 and 89. Both are 4.0, 5 speed. Any ideas on an upgrade that is more sound proof? Any ideas on soundproofing either side of the firewall?
