This was the variable assist power steering. There will be an electrical connection on the power steering pump for a solenoid that controls pump pressure based on vehicle speed. Higher speed, lower pressure, steering is less sensitive. Lower speed, higher pressure, steering is easier. Sent from atop the porcelain throne. Yes. So the steering boxes are all fixed ratio. Its the pumps that are variable. So even swapping to a ZJ 12.7:1 box. Won't make you variable or non. Its the pump that determines this.

Yes. The visor itself isnt even 1/8 thick, and only fiberglass. Its very easy to drill all the way through. And those lights are considered "flush mount" so they require a 3/4" hole to be drilled and mounted into Here is the link to the lights http://www.amazon.com/Maxxima-M09300YCL-Combination-Clearance-Marker/dp/B00L5204O4 -
I'm in Monson MA and we definitely hit multiple negative double digits between this and last winter (mainly last winter)

Yes mine is just a XJ unit. And it has a non removable original factory sticker saying Delphi 10148. So I know its the "right" one. There is the possibility. Like I noted that if you had a replacement tank with no baffle that the Delphi/XJ unit would work. It would just be 2" higher then the MJ unit. That may be the case with the "confirmed" usage of it.

Glad to hear!

IMPORTANT UPDATE so i've begun leaking fairly heavily in recent weeks again. i have bought the delphi hp10148 fuel sending unit, i happened to also have a left over HO-XJ FSU, and then of course my HO-MJ FSU that's been in the truck. here is a couple side by side of all 3, delphi, XJ, MJ as you can see, all 3 have fairly similar dimensions, you can also see the delphi is 99% identical to the XJ FSU... both of which sit about 2" higher then the MJ one so after coming to the realization that the delphi "MJ" FSU is really just an XJ unit... i decided to put that back in its box for returnal. i moved my attention over to my existing XJ FSU. it still worked great, (i had a leaky tank on an my wifes old XJ and i pulled a used whole tank assembly from a low mileage jeep by buddy rolled over) so i tidied that one up, painted it made sure the wiring was ok... went to attempt to install it and NO GO. mounting ring wouldnt sit flush. tried for 15 minutes, NO GO. now I'm not sure if my tank is factory or replacement, but here is what i found when i took a picture of the inside of the tank... now to my delight, it was spotless clean! and has what looks like a baking pan (baffle?) in the center. of which my MJ FSU sits nicely inside just to the inside of the right hand wall, with the float and strainer sitting inside facing the center of the "baking pan" . this means the opposite orientation of the delphi/XJ FSU rests it ever so abruptly right ontop of this outer wall. never allowing the mounting ring to sit flush. now if you had persay a tank with no baffle (baking pan) then the XJ unit would probably work great, albeit a little shorter. or by possibly cutting the two locating tabs off of the FSU and rotating it counter clockwise some to clear the pan, it may also work, but this would also mean the pickup is even higher up and losing/wasting more fuel. so as of now my original MJ FSU is sitting in some evaporust, waiting to be cleaned and soldered

question about axles and gauges

i truely don't understand why so many people get so "butthurt" over low pinion d30s. -
i too run 10w-40

that would be my second idea

OK. So with some minor googling. I have found that while yes some jeeps had "variable steering" this was done at the steering PUMP not the steering BOX. The boxes are ALL fixed ratio, whether 14:1 or 12.7:1. Some jeeps were outfitted with a pump with an electric actuator placed next to the top hydraulic line that dependent on speed would restrict fluid output to the box. Causing a drop in assist (tighter steering) the faster you go, helping oversteer and similar at highway speeds.
-
Its my knowledge that is entirely wrong. J trucks HAD a variable steering box.
-
if the stock MJ/XJ box is variable why is the only listed ratio 14:1? if it was variable wouldnt it show a range?
-
would it be possible to video tape the engine running? to possibly hear it from our end?
-
dumb question, you say ou put all new plugs in, are they gapped correctly? could 1 be miss gapped?

OP has an 89. Pre OBD. No flashing lights or codes. Only way I am aware he could get computer info is from a SnapOn MT2500 or similar scanner. . Wasn't sure what year he had, that's why I listed some explanatory questions.

Oh I understand, I was just stating. Even my new van, is right in line with "like new" jeep pressures. I understand what they end up being now in time and what's still acceptable. Was just trying to give kind of a similar view from a different vehicle.

Sorry I'm lost on what you mean by variable steering?

here's the lights in the visor . i forget exactly my measurements, but it was about an 1" in across all lights. the the outer two about 1.5" from the edge, the the center was centered (obviously) and the offsets were about 6" out from that. so following a centered postition it was 17-6-6-17 here's how i went through the roof. P.S. that is clear silicone, it just hasnt dried yet. as for exact wiring, you can kind of see it tucked into the leading edge of the visor when your sitting inside, in hindsight i should have probably loomed it all. i couldnt get a clear picture of this, but i basically daisy chained (paralleled) all the lights. and then i went through the roof with that stainless sheathing, then right down the drivers a column, under the plastic, and tagged onto the dash lamp circuit, as this was easiest to find. -
Unless it was free, and even still, the 1/2 a turn savings doesnt seem worth the hassle of the swap.
-
If you have the ability to. Try a smoke test and see if you get any leaks
-
Do you have a check engine light flashing or a code or something specifically stating engine miss fire? Or are you just assuming because there was no change in idle when you unplugged the front plug?
-
I forget who it was...maybe eagle? Did 4 or 5 RMS before successfully stopping a leak

Eh, My Chevy van (2014) is normally dead on 40psi no matter the speed, been like that since I got it with 7miles on it. With hard pulls going up to 50 psi or so. Only After running all day, it may drop to 30 at idle but never any lower.

question about axles and gauges
mikekaz1 replied to vandior2001's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
that being said, D30 4.10 axles are getting harder to find with the newest xj being 15 years old and newest TJ being 10 years old, supplies are getting thin (atleast here in new England) rears are a tiny bit easier being many source other vehicles, like explorers for the 4.10s. 4.56 are basically unobtainable in stock jeep form. no matter what you will have to have mounts cut off the rear axle and new mounts welded, depending on available skill and tools, this could add up to $200 in rear axle cost
