How bad is a good maintained AX5 really?
mnkyboy replied to wombat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thats what i always liked about my old AX4,never had to worry about 5th gear. -
They are all 23 spline output, also mid89-91 have a .590 input and 92 up are .750 so you would need to source the correct pilot bushing/bearing for which ever AX15 you go with. a bushing for a 70s CJ5 with a 304 fits the larger input, the smaller input should b the same as the BA10/5

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project

Mastercraft MXT 37x12.50-17s,I'm pushing to get the truck to NWfest in June (hopefully Naches will be open by then) so i went a little cheap on the tires to help the build along. They are made by Cooper and were supposed to be similar to the STT,now that i have them i can say they are no STT but they should work for now.- 798 replies

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project
mnkyboy replied to mnkyboy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Had this thing show up at the shop,it just happens to have the right length coil overs for the MJ and the guy plans to buy new ones for his build. I will have to rework some stuff but they will be a nice upgrade.- 798 replies

I beat on my AX4 for a long time with no issues,it worked fine when i pulled it out for the AX15 swap. -
All XJs with ABS got the D35. If its a non ABS rig that year should have a 29 spline 8.25.

Mine did great with 4.88s and 33s.

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project
mnkyboy replied to mnkyboy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Lately i have been flexing the truck and taking measurements, making adjustments then repeating. I've trimmed some stuff and moved the rear axle back some,i also had to remove the tube portion of my front bumper so i get to build a new bumper. Once everything is where i want it i will set the bump stops and set up the shocks. I am also considering ditching the coils and getting coil overs up front, this will simplify things and i will be able to rework my trac bar.- 798 replies

Got a few minutes to play with the MJ. Flexed it with the new tires, looks like the front bumper has to go so i get to make a new one but everything else should be ok with a little cutting and bump stops.- 798 replies

You can find them used, the hard part would be finding the Renix stuff for it.
-
The OBD1 port on 91 and newer is next to the computer on the drivers side and any obd1 scanner with a Chrysler plug will fit it but as stated you don't need one. The only one i have seen that will scan a Renix is the old Snap On brick (mt2500) and they are getting hard to find anymore.

1986 jeep comanche Ax4 swap
mnkyboy replied to Jeepjeff859's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Nothing other then an AX4/AX5 will be bolt in without adapting it. -
There is an old thread out in cyberspace with lots of info and several dyno runs showing the increase on a 2.5l with various mods, the spacer being one of them. The thread I think is still up but the dyno pics don't display anymore, still interesting to read. If I remember right the spacer alone added like 2hp by itself but used with other mods it did make a decent difference.
-
And to answer the question , Yes I have one on my 2.5l.
-
Is his a Rough country? Some of the other brands are much more expensive so it could have cost him much more then $50.
-
I abused my AX4 for many years, it was still working fine when I finally pulled it to swap in the AX15. IMO the AX4/AX5 are great light duty transmissions.
-
^^^ what they said.
-
Nice, I've got some 44x18.5s sitting around that I have been talking about putting on my MJ just for fun, not sure I would want to drive on them though.

Question about SOA leaf conversion for front axle
mnkyboy replied to Jargon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
His build started out on the right track then he talked to the shop and they convinced him to build it how it is. you wouldn't believe how much money he has in this thing,he is losing his @$$ on the truck if it sells. We got it driving good then we were going to address the brakes and axle seals, It's got a 79 Ford full float D60 in the rear so axle seals are fairly easy. The owner ran into some problems and is forced to get rid of the MJ, otherwise he would still be building it. I think its been for sale for a little while now but it sat at the shop till about a week or so ago.- 22 replies
