3 Separate Issues.
benjy_26 replied to ftpiercecracker1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Also, how aggressively do you wheel it? I jumped my ZJ once ( I know....) and had horrible vibes above 50. Thought I had it narrowed down to a bent wheel. Much to my surprise, I had bent the passenger side axle shaft (!?!?) of my Explorer 8.8. -

2 Inch Lift Shock Questions
benjy_26 replied to Dadinator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok. I just looked at some shocks on line and it seems to me that the stock shocks for a ZJ are good for 2" in the front of a ZJ and you *should* be ok with the ZJ shocks as well (they're good for 2-2.5 on the back of the XJ). Now, which ones to get? I have a feeling that the Monroe Reflex shocks would work well, being that they're made by Tenneco, I'm going to assume they're similar to some of their Rancho offerings. I would say go ahead and change the steering stabilizer as well as address any bushings that look hashed. You got the tires off anyway, might as well dive in! -
2 Inch Lift Shock Questions

I would, simply because you're probably going to see an improvement just by going to new shocks. -
I seem to recall that the W55 or W58 trannys were rumored to fit some AX bellhousings. I believe some investigation is in order.... To the JY, Robin! :D

Lock Right Vs Spartan Vs Aussie Vs Lokka

Nice Thanks guys. I'll be looking into those. :) -
150? 200? Y'all are paying WAY too much. I got a 24" Magnaflow glasspack in 2.5" and a turn down for another 10 bucks, add some clamps, a bit of sawzall, and a stray length of chain to hang it off the stock hanger and I got a quality sounding, free flowing exhaust on thr cheap. I haven't welded it together yet, but I see/hear no leaks.

I'm with Jim on the comp test. I ran into a similar issue on my ZJ's stroker when I first built it and thought bigger was always better. Having said that... What are the specs on your cam? i went with a ridiculously large grind from Comp Cams and made one of my springs bind. Luckily, nothing got seriously damaged. Hopefully, that's what you're seeing with yours.

A buddy's dad used one off of a Toyota pickup. He chopped off the stock mounting plates amd welded on some that he fabbed to be compatible with his LWB mounting points. Maybe the same can be done for your SWB?

Oh, btw, there's also a rumor of a 'yota tranny fitting the Jeep AX5 bell. I think its a W55 or W58 tranny. What's my point, you ask? Well, the tranny in question was often found behind a 7MGTE in Supras, giving it good power handling characteristics, is fairly light, and it is said that it can be mated to the Yota t-cases fairly easily. If I can't get to where I need to be using Jeep/Chryco parts, I have no compunctions about putting a bit of Toy in my Manche. I'll keep y'all posted on my findings.

I'll keep an eye out, but in my area, 4 banger Heeps that were NOT YJ's are the Unicorns. lol. I know that a YJ has a different mounting scheme for the T-Case than the XJ/MJ. Is it possible to re-clock it to work in a MJ, or is it even a real isdue? As far as the Dodge 2.5-tp-AX15 bellhousing, they are fairly rare in the US.... But in Mexico, they can be had much more easily. Living a stone's throw away from the border does have its advantages. ;)

Sway Bar Needed Or Just There To Limit
benjy_26 replied to Spectormj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Oh, and you'd be surprised how much flex you can get from the stock quad link jeep suspension when you use poly bushings, unhook the sway bar, and use the proper length shocks. ;) -
Sway Bar Needed Or Just There To Limit
benjy_26 replied to Spectormj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't run sway bars on any of my Jeeps, or on my K5. I don't find it to feels unsafe, unstable, or in anyway law-suit inducing. I also tend to run mud tires with a big void ratio on the street. The relative lack of grip might mitigate the more violent body roll some of these guys are seeing. Another thing, for the times I want to drive a sports car, I have a proper sports car with the engine behind me driving the rear wheels. I do not drive any of my trucks aggressively on the street (they're all grandpa Jeeps in that sense), I always leave plenty of space between myself and the people in front of me, I "drive friendly", and I always drive according to conditions. This saves me fuel, weaf and tear, stress, money on citations, and lets me mind freak my buddies when they see me driving a locked or spooled vehicle on mud terrains in the ice and snow without slipping and sliding around like everyone else. I think that the whole sawybar/no swaybar issue is a matter of personal taste. Some feel like they need it, some don't really miss it. -
I was afraid of that. The 2.5 Jeeps arent very common in my area. If I'm going to need a full donor, it's actually easier for me to do an AX15 swap. :-\

Hello everyone. In my ongoing quest to make my MJ more appropriate for my usage, I have decided that the AX4 that's in there won't be in there for long. I want an overdrive gear and an external slave cylinder, so I'm looking at AX5's, prefferebly with n attached t case so I can do my 4wd conversion at the same time. Is there a particular year or vehicle I should be looking for to donate it's parts to my Manche? Thanks in advance!

There's some 16x7 ZJ snowflake- looking wheels out there that look pretty cool. -
I wonder how a MJ woukd perform with an ultra flat leaf set up that's SOA? Anyway, I've heard good things about HC, but to be honest, when I bite thr bullet and do my rear, I'll probably call Alcan. Military wrap AND orbital joints insted of bushings are the sex!

Tell me more about this No-Slip. It sounds interesting. -
I've run Krawler Ready 1.5" spacers in the front of my ZJ along with the OME heavy load coils all around for about 4 years now for high speed desert stuff and the ride is superb. I first used OME shocks, but those had a tendency to boil over after hard (ab)use. I now run Bilstein's in the front and ProComp MX6 adjustables in the back with good results. A bit stiffer than the OME's, but they soak up everything I've thrown at them and are soft enough for long trips. I'_ve been eyeing JKS's ACOS system as of late as well, more for the hydro bump stop than anything, but the ability to balance out my somwhat tweaked (pass side rides a tiny bit taller than the drivers) OME's would be cool.

Lol I know... I've snapped a few dirty-5's in my day, but was thinking of leaving the MJ's 2.5 pretty much stock. That, and the 31" KO's shouldn't bother it TOO much... But for the same amount of cash, I can buy a n 8.8 with 4.10's and a LSD and just move the perches to match the MJ. I had even forgotten I had put this thread up, to be honest. -
Awespme, FREAKIN' truck! I love it!
