So I Had A Thought For A Engine Swap
benjy_26 replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yup. I'm hitting a bit over 260whpon the dyno pushing 32's and a 42re. My 3S puts out a respectable 346whp. All of this is at 3000ft above sea level on a Mustang chassis dyno. -

Stock to stock, yes. I have a pretty healthy 4.6l stroker and I am no where near getting 300hp. A 3SGTE can get that easily. -
My local hardware store just got a bunch of 105's in. I can check prices for you and ship em out if you'd like.

BTW, a FULLY dressed 3SGTE is weighing in at around 450lbs. The 4.0 is supposed to weigh in at around 480. Don't know if that's dressed or not. -

I'm in a top secret, underground, government installation.... J/K I'm i El Paso. If you can snaggle that 3S, DO IT. 200HP, 200ftlbs in stock trim is what that thing brings to the party. As much as I love me some Jeep L6 goodness, I dare anyone to show me a CL-special 4.0 that'll throw those #'s down. Add a free flowing exhaust, intake, and some fuel and ignition tuning ane you're good for 240. Slap on a slightly bigger turbo, and 300 very reliable HP is not out of the question. -

I've been thinking along the same lines as you. I want more power than my 2.5, but want something different than the 4.0. I'm seriously considsring going with a Toyota drivetrain. I just gotta figure out how to make a 3SGTE mate up to a truck tranny. OR... I may say screw it and just use a 1UZFE! ;) -
NICE!! Gotta get me some 20 mike mike boxes! FWIW, I really dig the .30 boxes for behind the seat storage. a lot of odds and ends fit in them and the sit back there without taking up too much room.

Removing Gauge Cluster To Change Lights

I got mine for $10 at my local PNP. -
I made speaker boxes that bolt down behind the rear seat with a pair of 7.62 cans. The rest I use for, well, ammo...

So.... I decided to swap out my parking lamp sockets (zj tail light sockets are a perfect fit, btw) and I got my driver side parking lamp AND turn signal to work!!!! Unfortunately, now I get a steady parking lamp in the pass. side and no turn signal there. Any suggestions? BTW, I followed your advice, and I dropped a ground from the battery into the circuit and I scrubbed and greased the 6 pin connector. -

NICE! I may just buy another one. :) As far as disassmbly, I already upgraded to a new harness and relays for my headlights. That connector is only really servicing my side markers and turn sigals. -

Yup. That's the connector I pried apart and cleaned. I was thinking of bypassing it completely. Any adverse effects if I do? Looks like it was installed to speed up header panel assembly/disassembly to me. -
Need Some Help With A Few Things
benjy_26 replied to Usamedic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
For a tire carrier, I've been eyeballing the Tiregate systems on sale. Maybe I can mod one to fit, or weld up my own. As far as the topper, I like em matched to the body. To each his own. Maybe someone local can powder coat your bolts? -
3 Separate Issues.

The mud comment stuck in my mind. What wheels are you running? Back when I had Flat 5's on my ZJ, mud would collect inside thr inner ridge of the wheel. I wouldn't notice that it was there, even after pressure washing, until I got uo to certain speeds and it would cause the world's worst destb wobble. Freaked me the hell out the first time it happened. Long story short, I switched to Canyons. -
Maybe a stock rebuild on your 6 banger and a pair of Super-doody axles from the JY woukd make your Jeep happy on 37's. I've seen a TON of F250's around my area with both axles intact. Some come stocm on 4.88's and the local pick and pull sells ANY axle for a Benjamin around here. Maybe I need to build a truggy.... :D

I have 32" KM2's on Canyons with a locked 4.11 rear end and I can sit therr and spin them til they pop. The condition and tune of your engine will play a big role in how much gearing you will need, as well as your intended use. If you have a big lift, headwinds (and crosswinds) WILL be a factor. Myself, I have a 1.75" lift and a lot of cutting to fit those 32's. Also, if possible, get yourself a set if nice, light wheels. I got a whole lot more power (according to my highly calibrated @$$-o-meterĀ®) by going from my 27lb steel 15x7's to my 16lb 15x8 Canyons. Rotating mass and unsprung weight are things we as Jeepers sometimes ignore, but they affect us in a big, big way.

My thoughts exactly... and maybe with a different type of oil than he's been using.

So.... the left front parking lamo hasnt worked on my MJ since I bought it. While cleaning up my wiring, I decided to tackle this issue once and for all. Two replacement bulbs didn't help, so I measured the voltage across thr connector. According to my trusty, crusty Fluke multimeter, I was getting around 11 volts to both the turn signal circuit and the parking lamp circuit. Ok, time for a replacement plug. Went to the JY, got a few plugs (no body in town has the old school sockets anymore), came home, cut out thr old, test-wired in the new....and nothing. No parking lamp, plus, now thr blinker doesnt work (did before) as well as the blinker dying on the passenger side! checked fuses, all is well there, rear blinkers and tail lights kick off, so I assune the multifunction switch and flasher are OK. Cleaned and checked the 6 conductor plug behind thr driver side headlight and still no joy. At this point, I'm thinking I should just trace wirr back towards the firewall until I get voltage, bypass the goofy connector, and run nee wire to my lights. Any thoughts, comments, ir suggestions? All are greatly appreciated. :)

Oh, and as far as the OP's engine, he did mention that it's a fresh build with 5000 miles. I don't know what y'akl's experience has been, but I've noticed that (to a point) an engine does get more powerful and more efficient once its racked up some miles. I wonder what the OP's break-in procedure and maintenence schedule is like.

Injector cleaners don't really do much on engines with modern, high pressure injectors. On a Renix TBI engine, perhaps, but with the 4.0, the spray alone will keep your injectors humming along. Just remember to use quality fuel from a busy station. As far as mods for economy, I may have fallen bass-akwards into it, but I get 23-24mpg on the highway with my 4.7l stroker in an auto equipped 2wd zj running 32" KM2's and a locked 8.8 rear end. I have a cone filter (more for convenience than anything), Neon injectors, a large bore throttle body, a 99 WJ intake manifold, a Banks header, and a magnaflow muffler, all stitched together with 2.5" mandrel bent tube. I did dump my exhaust before the axle (why carry extra weight and have two more bends adding restriction?), and I use nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic fluids in my vehicle. I also have a MSD 6AL box along with a Blaster SS coil, their 8.5mm wires, and their hi-po dizzy. I'll dig up my cam profile if you guys want, but I know I'm right at the limit when it comes to lift while using stock style springs. ** Forgot to mention, I did get my intake manifold and exhaust manifold port matched to the head. I know all of these mods make for a huge wallop above 4500rpm, but interestingly enough, cruising on thr highway at 55mph, I have a pretty flat power band, I hardly ever feel the tranny downshift unless I mash thr pedal, and the engine is pushing me along while spinning right below 1500rpm. I do get pretty terriblr milage in stop and go driving, but the highway numbers keep my combined average at around 16mpg.

I'm running Spidertrax 1.5" (I believe) spacers in thr front and some no-name spacers I got locally in the back (1.25") that I had to have my own studs pressed into. 2 years later, they are both doing their jobs. All I do is inspect them periodicallyand make sure everything is still tight and looking good... just as everyone should, whether you run spacers or not. Are the Spidertrax units finished to a higher standard? Undoubtedly. Are they "better"? In my opinion, they are so far as looks go, but functionally, they're both doing the job. Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm 99.99999% sure that the Canyons I'm running with these spacers aren't hub centric, though I could be wrong.

Brake Conversion - Wheel Size Advise

A tiny bit of grinding on a caliper isn't out of the question, either. Just make sure not to hit anything important....
