Tire rack lists the country of origin of all it's tires, funny thing is made in USA tires aren't usually much more $$ (if at all). Might as well buy stuff made here while you still can. :dunno: FWIW, I'm running BFG KM2's, made here. :D :USAflag:

So im changing the spark plugs/wires...
jpnjim replied to mrsinister's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What year is your MJ? My 89' had wires stamped with the date, and 'AMC' (even though Chrysler had already taken over by then). I saved them. I doubt anyone will want to restore it to stock 'someday', but I still can't stand to throw away 21 year old original date stamped parts like this. :dunno: The plugs looked original too, but there's no way to be sure. I tossed one of them in the box for posterity. ;) -
I thought I found some a month ago, got my order placed and everything, they canceled it the next day, and said there were no more. :( edit: found the thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=21174 I'd go $250 for an NOS factory bumper (Black, with the caps), if shipping wasn't crazy to Boston.

Did you just swap them to test them, or ?

You could probably test your patience by getting some sponge brushes, putting them on the end of a 2 foot section of 1/2" pipe, or broomstick, and try to POR-15 it. The toughest part of painting like this would probably be surface prep. There's no telling what wax, oil, or grime is in there, most paints like to stick to a nice textured/lightly sanded, clean paint finish, or bare metal (in POR-15's case). I guess you could try prepping it first with some kind of cleaner, or lacquer thinner (paging MJ is dead :D ) on the same type of brush, but if the final finish doesn't adhere well, it's not going to offer much protection.

Wanting metal Tail light boxes? Possible group buy?

I was just kidding with the 'make taillights' comment, but if he does work in plastics, I wonder if he could: 1)use a set of good taillights to make a mold 2)use the mold to make the red plastic outer lens part 3)sell the new lens part as a 'do it yourself MJ taillight repair kit'. you separate the outer part from the inner of your broken taillight, and fasten the new part to the inner plastic piece. :dunno: I've never tried to separate the two parts of out taillights, so I am completely speaking out of my ***, but I think having a plastics guy fab the complete taillight would be a pretty tall order. Probably should start another thread on this tho. :smart: :typing: -
They changed calipers when they went from 2-piece outer knuckles to 1-piece outer knuckles, I believe the changeover year was 1990 (when they also changed to 2-piece Chrysler rotors, 9" rear drums, and C-clip 35's). Can't you just buy new/rebuilt loaded (with pads) calipers at the parts store? My understanding is they're usually pretty cheap. :dunno:

With the XJ wiring harness I had to use a Tow-Ready converter box (part #119130). This adapts the 3-wire system to a 2-wire system. The lights are just basic STT (Stop Turn Tail) so they will function as all 3 just like you see on trucks. Yes they are legal, here in NC at least. I will still need some form of reverse lights and a tag light but those will come with the bumper later. You might need a reflector too. :dunno: The reflector was built into the stock taillights, but most big truck style taillights do not have built in reflectors. Either way, it's good to have something reflective back there, never know when you're going to end up stopped on a dark road, with no lights.

Does it say AMC on it (or have the symbol)? I'd have to set my price depending on how badly it was butchered to fit the Ranger, and how badly you want it (sounds like you want it bad  ). $20 (like Dan said) is probably a good starting point, depending on how bad the current owner wants to keep it, and how much he knows about your desire to own it. :dunno: If he's still using it in a Ranger, I'd say the price should start at $20, and go right up to whatever a new replacement mat would cost him. If it was mint perfect, and the guy knew what he had, who knows how high it could go.

Chrysler did an awesome job FIXING the piston non-problem in 1996. :shake: Short skirt diesel impersonating slipper pistons. Thanks Chrysler. :ack: The old AMC pistons that had full skirts & went 300k+ miles, lets fix that. :dunce:

I'd give Brian a break on this one, even though there are a handful of guys here excited about the project (me included), it doesn't seem like he's counting on it being a big money maker for the company. Small side projects tend to get bumped down the priority list, maybe for something with greater earning potential, or he's busy building other stuff for inventory, or they may have had to cut hours for the guys, and there's less time for side projects. :dunno: Either way, hopefully Brian will post up soon, and say if they're still considering it, and if they made any progress. Hopefully once he makes them, they'll fly off the shelves. With no one producing MJ tailights, they might be more popular than he thinks they will. -
I painted my wheels, some ammo cans, and a bunch of other misc stuff with the Camo paint. So far, it's been pretty durable for a flat paint. (tho it's hard to tell under all the crud in this pic :( ) As far as having a paint shop spray on flat paint, you'd have to talk to them (or "MJ is dead" since he chimed in on this thread  ), but I'm thinking a paint shop is going to want to go a base coat/clear coat, with the flattener being in the clear. I've also heard of guys JUST spraying the base coat of a 2 stage system to get a flat, but my understanding is all the UV protection is in the clear (I'm not a painter :dunno: ) MJ is dead, any special rules for a flat job? Do you guys do them? Guarantee them?

I need about a day in there to clean it out & organize it. I collected most of the FSM's back before everyone on Ebay decided they were worth $50-$100+ a piece. I'd watch every auction, and if it went for less than $20, or so, I'd grab it. Also used to keep a list of ones I 'needed', and bring it to all the car shows. AMC shows were the best, since most of the parts dealers treated Jeep like AMC's r*tarded cousin :clapping: . AMC Data books would be $100 each, Jeep Data Books $20, or $50 if you bought the whole box. I had a deal with one vendor, every Jeep part or book he came across during the year went into a box, and he'd give me a price at his clubs annual AMC show for the whole box. It was all, or nothing, and every year I bought the box Some other goodies:(yeah the room is really a mess)

They were. Atleast one year Sahara came with them (maybe two), I forget the year right now, but have the brochure in my bedroom, I'll check when I get a chance.
-
They were my absolute favorite till yesterday, now I'm on the fence. :hmm: Atleast if I move Ravines to the top of my list, they're easier to find than Silverstars. :dunno:
-
That'll do :D  I'm going to order a set right now  Thanks for the pic. & They look awesome wrapped in BFG MT's! Ravine's are on their way to bumping the 5.9 Silverstars off as my: "favorite XJ/MJ wheel of all time"
