Project "Grandpa Jeep" (the anti-build)
jpnjim replied to jpnjim's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I'm going to get a gauge set from a member here, but in the meantime, I pulled the set out of the Trail MJ to go into the Grandpa-mobile. (I'm waaaayyyy too anal to daily drive something without gauges  ). Before: 031693.2 miles I'll be completely honest, before I pulled the old cluster out, I still had some lingering doubts about the low mileage. All the paperwork checked out, but I'm just not a trusting person when it comes to some stuff. :dunno: Well, pulling the cluster out laid any fears to rest. It's obvious no one had taken the dash apart since it was built, and the cluster itself appears untouched as well. 1987 Gauge set goes under the knife, to fit the shift indicator, and match the mileage: (mileage not yet there in this pic): Mileage advanced to 031693.2, and installed: I should've hacked open the shifter indicator spot a little bigger, if I ever take the cluster apart again, I think I'll open it up a bit more at the top: Hopefully there will be time tomorrow to swap the oil & water sending units. You can almost see the factory clock, and MP3 transmitter I added as well. Shameless plug for the Soundfly SD Wireless FM transmitter. You put all your songs on an SD card, up to 32g (or M3 player, or any USB connected source), plug it in your cig lighter, tune the Soundfly to whatever unused FM band you want, and it plays really clearly, through your radio. I could even clearly tune into it from my other MJ, maybe 15 feet away. -
x50 bazillion. I'm amazed how far the thing got up the ramp, If you ignore the back set of wheels, that thing's ramping in the 9's. Did I mention how much I like bobbed deuce & a halfs.
-
Thanks for looking them up for me Jim. It seems strange that it would come back as an AMC part, since I've always considered that kind of plug in connector to be a Chrysler thing. :dunno:
-
It was in an 88' (Shortbed Pioneer). I'm 100% sure it was swapped in by a previous owner, I'm just surprised to (finally) figure out it's actually as stock radio for 'something'.
-
Hmmm.. Searching the part numbers was a good idea, I didn't get any hits for the cassette unit (8936001571), but I did get a hit for the EQ (8936001570): Looks like it's an AMC part, not Chrysler: http://www.analogalley.com/manual_1.htm But I'm thinking the wiring harness used by this radio is Chrysler Style, not AMC :dunno:

mj and xj windshields interchangable?
jpnjim replied to trail grenade's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sure. You can also use the 97-01 XJ windshield gasket/trim piece instead of the MJ's stainless steel trim for a cleaner look. -
I took pics of the decals: another pic of the backs: and pics of the 89' Jeep AM/FM only stickers for reference: :dunno:
-
Compared to the stock AM/FM only 89' radio, even the face looks the same: & side view: I know I'm  but I'd really like to know what this 2-piece radio originally went in.
-
OK, I once owned an MJ that had (what I thought was) an aftermarket 2-piece stereo put in. I should've taken pics of it, but it was a stacked stereo/Equalizer, with the EQ mounted where the air vent (under the heater) is. I pulled that stereo out way back then (1998), and haven't done much with it since. So today, I'm looking for some Jeep stuff, and I dig out the old radio. I never did find a brand name on it (figured it was some no-name thing), but today I really look at the back of the Eq: That SURE LOOKS LIKE A FACTORY PLUG TO ME. 89' factory radio I just pulled out of the 'new' MJ above mystery radio: NOW I'm really confused :dunno: Best I can figure, the radio must be a factory setup for some other Chrysler Product, and the previous owner hooked it up. I have more pics to post, if anyone wants closeups of the decals, or whatever, but any idea what kind of Chrysler product used a 2-piece stereo like this (before 1998)

My unfinished masterpiece. ;) No time to finish now. :typing:

Some of the other forums have you put your state's initials in parentheses at the beginning of your ad's title. Actually works really well.

I'll post the description, and pic, and you guess the price. :D Porsche 996 986 911 Sport extra thick steering wheel So, 911 and Boxster Porsche owners send their steering wheels to these guys, and they make them thicker. Sounds good, looks nice, how much could the service of modifying a stock Porsche steering wheel cost, $200? $300 How about $1,150.00. :rotf: :rotfl2: :rotf: :rotfl2: :rotf: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche- ... 45f0ef2373 + whatever the core charge is that you'll be paying while you wait for your mechanic to swap wheels for you.

I've had MJ's with headliners in all stages of disintegration (except for the first option :( ) Currently my 'Grandpa Jeep' has the stock material in place, ripped on both sides, and held up with a couple dozen pins. The 'Trail Jeep' has just the fiberboard panel left, spray painted black for now (looks slightly less horrible than it sounds :D ) I'm pretty sure EVERY MJ owner has dealt with this problem at one time, or another. So, post up guys.

Wow, can't say I've seen one of these go through Ebay before. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-CHE ... ccessories

Looks like a CFC to me. Absolutely HORRIBLE. If I was closer, I'd have them pull the cab corners & rockers. Hopefully someone will grab them. :(

I'll have to dig out the brochure, but I think you could get a column shift in a Police Package XJ. :dunno: edit, dug up a pic. Looks funny with the T-case shifter on the floor, but no tranny shifter. Image Not Found From this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/my-n ... cs-196215/ Notice, it DOES have gauges AND the cop speedo. (but no tach). Leave it to Jeep to start offering column shift + gauges AFTER they cancel the MJ.

When I said it, I never thought I'd really see it. :rotfl2: (not our ramp, but very similar)

Diney-lan @ school vacation week. :rotfl2: :rotf: :rotfl2: :rotf: Have fun.

Project "Grandpa Jeep" (the anti-build)
jpnjim replied to jpnjim's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
:D I forget it's even there, till I look at pics snapped in front of it. Auction won on 1/21/10, and they STILL have NOT shipped the correct replacement mirrors. :wall: -
Everyone criticizes AMC engineers/designers, whatever, but there are some nice lines on that car, especially when you consider it's a Gremlin with a face lift. Same wheelbase, same unitbody, windshield, doors (door glass/glass frame may be different, I forget now), all mechanicals, etc etc I like the Gremlin, but they redesigned the quarter panels & nose of a 'niche' vehicle, whose time had come, and gone, and turned it into a mainstream car for the masses. Most people probably wouldn't know they were the same car, even when parked side by side. They also made a longer wheelbase version of this same vehicle, and that became: The 2dr, 4dr & 2dr hatchback Hornet The 2dr, 4dr & 2dr hatchback Concord The 4dr Sportabout (Hornet/Concord Wagon) 3 models of all wheel drive eagles (2dr/4dr/wagon), and 2 AMX's (77 Hornet AMX, and the 78 Concodr AMX) in addition to 2 AWD short wheelbase Spirit/SX/4 variants (SX4 & Kammback), and a Spirit AMX (probably the nicest looking of all) All on a chassis designed in the 1960's (for 1970 introduction). IMO the Eagle Kammback was the best of all, since they dug the Gremmie skins back out again, and were able to sell them to the American public one more time. Spirit AMX (Black was even better  ):

Dakota 40/20/40 seat brackets
jpnjim replied to flyn2er's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Maybe it's just the angle of the pics, but it looks like the seat needs to sit awfully high get above the hump in the middle. I was going to suggest adding a brace on the floor, like the 97+ XJ's have, but I don't think you could get that mount anywhere near it. Also, does this seat have seat mounted seat belts (like the late model XJ's). (If yes) are you going to be able to abandon them, and run the factory belts up through holes in the seats, or try to reuse the Dakota factory belts? Just curious, looks like a decent seat if you can make it work. Thanks for posting the pics. -
Am I missing something, or is Edelbrock no longer selling their shocks directly from their website? I ordered some of them last year, but can't find the link to buy them online (through Edelbrock) anymore. :???: (I know they're liquidating, but there was still plenty of 'scraps' left the last time I was there). Edit: found it: http://store.edelbrock.com/4wheeldriveapplications.aspx

Eagle, did you ever see the old magazine review of a hump-nose Javelin (71-74), where the axle sheered in half as the reviewer pulled away from a stop light? The rest of the review didn't go so well after that. :rotfl2:
