The carrier, or differential is the biggest internal part of your axle. The ring gear bolts to it, & the carrier bearings attach to either side (where it bolts into the axle housing). The parts that allow one wheel to spin faster than the other in turns (differential), are inside that carrier. A full case (automatic) locker takes the place of the entire carrier, and it's differential will lock, and unlock as needed, and still allow one wheel to spin faster than the other in turns. The locker's case is built specifically to house the locking mechanism inside, and (hopefully) is up to the task of handling the shock loads of locking & unlocking. An Aussie/Lockright etc lunchbox does the same thing, but instead of replacing the entire carrier, it just replaces the spider gears inside an open (non-locking) carrier with cogged parts that will lock & unlock as needed. In some applications, the factory open carrier is considered the weak link, and putting a lockright to it just puts it under even more stress than it was as an open.

I get exactly 1/2 that, in a good running, low mileage 2wd 4.0L MJ, on 30's.

EXACTLY my thinking!! I never had one in the front, but one guy in my club did. I have ridden in and driven that YJ and I can tell you you are spot on correct. IMHO, a Detroit in the front of a vehicle like a CJ/YJ,TJ is a mistake. Now go figure, I HAVE and have had lock-rites and Aussies in the front axle of jeeps and they are fine. In fact the Aussie in my TJ on 35's is completely invisible. The mud terrains are noisy enough that you do not even hear or feel the ratcheting in turns! LOL. Even so, I pretty sold on the Tru track for the front. Its just gonna have to wait for a while...I'm gonna fix the D44 first! maybe if mommas agreeable, I'll grab some funds from the tax return and do it quickly!! :brows: :brows: Thanks for the tips and opinions guys, keep 'em coming!! :thumbsup: CW I'm running 33-36" tires on a 30ft (with Alloy-USA shafts), and 60 rear (with a full Detroit & 35sp Moser shafts), & went back & forth between going with a full Detroit, or a LockRight in the front. With 4.56's I'd have to pull the gear set to put either in a D30, but I went with the lockright so I could swap the spiders back in if I broke it. Plus, for whatever reason, lockrights seem to deal with the shock load of a broken axle better than Detroits. I didn't think I'd snap a rear shaft, so I was less worried about running a Detroit there. (I don't carry spare rear shafts, so I'd be screwed either way :ack: ). For the 'Grandpa Jeep', depending on what (rear) axle I end up swapping in, I'm going to try to find an old school Power Lock (beefy, clutch type LSD), and run it tight. They can be very effective on the street, but like anything with clutches, only last so long offroad. Spools aren't bad in MJ's either (rear), and they don't bang like Detroits. :D

Those wheels are a little on the narrow side for 31/10.5's tho, they obviously work, but if you ever come across some cheap factory 7's, they'd fit better. The 15x7's, and the 15x6's (that you have) both have the same back spacing (5.25"), and the added inch of width is on the outside of the wheel (= your tires will stick out further, and get further away from your control arms & leafs in the back if you used the 15x7's). Either way (as long as they're not rubbing the leafs), :thumbsup:

Ha :clapping: Did the seat cover have that magazine pocket in the front? Might as well have had a bathrobe & slippers tucked behind the seat. :yes: There's no way this MJ didn't have an aftermarket center console. Someone must've grabbed it before you got it. :doh: Other than the column shift & bench seat, I've un-Grandpa'd most of the Grandpa stuff on mine (tho the rear mudflaps are still there), so it's becoming more of the clean cut metrosexual type 'Grand Dad' now. (maybe I should swap the skinny mismatched tires/wheels back on, and pull the radio fuse out before it's too late). :cheers:

You win Travis. :bowdown: There really is no known way to 'out Grandpa Jeep' a longbed MJ with a blue, bench seat, column shift interior, aluminum bed topper, and a wooden front bumper covered in carpet for crying out loud. :clapping: Might I suggest adding a Kraco radio from 1985, a K-mart center console (or better yet, a home made plywood one), and a plaid bench seat cover? Might as well go for the grandpa gold. :yes: BTW, awesome idea using the topper frame for a canvas cover. :thumbsup: That's one of those perfect idea's that everyone else (me included) somehow missed. :doh:

The Grandpa Jeep came with some "Jeep" ones (ft & rear!), but no AMC symbol on those:

I really didn't take any closeups before, but the bumpers on this Jeep were pretty bad: The back is not 100%, but I'm much happier with it after straightening it some (left side still needs work), closing up the hole, and adding a U-Haul hitch: I also swapped the ft bumper (& added ft hooks), but didn't get any pics of that yet. but here are 'the boys' together: I also swapped out the 87' full gauge pack for a 3/4 gauge set from TerraWombat (Thanks Terra! ): The gas gauge wasn't working on the full 87' set. :dunno: Hopefully I'll have time for more stuff tomorrow.

This is what mine look like: A buddy of mine had a bunch of them he got when cleaning a dealership out of old AMC stuff (a looooong while ago). Back then, anything that said 'Jeep' on it was considered an unwanted throw-in (and I was doing them a favor by taking it away :clapping: ) :nuts:

X2 on both of these. The 4.7L V8 would be sweet in a JK. The friggen things are so huge, it should be the base engine. FINALLY building a Jeep Pickup, and putting a V8 in something other than the Grands (& Commander) would 'fix' Jeep's two biggest fixable mistakes. More likely they'll spin another 'Jeep' off the Dodge Caliber, and tell us how cutting edge they are.

Hmm, I can now see the original pic in this thread, and the one's I have are different. Mine have a Red White & Blue 'A-mark' (AMC symbol), with 'JEEP' (printed in white) next to it, instead of a silver 'A-mark', with Jeep (printed in silver) under it. I didn't know there were two styles. I'll try to take a pic of mine later today/tomorrow. (I have a new pair in the box for 'Grandpa Jeep', and a single one, from that old J4000)

Lack of price on that page scares me. :D (& I bet you thought about polishing it to a chrome like finish before installing it. :yes: )

well i was wrong. started working on the bumper today and found some rust through spots so I'm back on the hunt. if worse comes to worse, i could patch it if i had to using pieces off my other bumper but i really don't want to do that. I bet you could patch a rear bumper with a section of a front bumper (maybe). I never put them side by side, but the groove/detail looks similar. :dunno:

You might be surprised how much of that you can straighten out if you tried. I used a vice where mine was buckled (both mounts were buckled too), and jacked it under the weight of the house to un-Vee it in the middle. It looks like my MJ was pushed around by some piece of heavy equipment, since it punched a hole right through the passengers side. Even that looked 'OK' after welding it closed, and hitting it with some semi-gloss black. :yes: The U-haul hitch helped to make sure everything was straight (hitch wouldn't line up till the bumper was 'mostly' straight). I probably got 90% of the twist of mine out, but ended up putting some back in trying to line it up for the hitch. :doh:

What's 'very deep'? I don't think I've ever seen a set go through Ebay.
