Military Wrapped Springs With Lift, Group Buy
jpnjim replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Any update on production? I believe I'm second to last on the list, not looking to jump the line or anything  Thanks to all for arranging this. -
Like Frank The Dog said, 4cyl AW4 XJ & MJ's got the rare and exclusive Factory 4.56 gears as well, so if you have the original axles still, pop those covers and look  21 spline NP231's would fit these early AW4s, the change to 23 spline outputs came in 1991 (some say mid year 1991)
-
There can be anything in there after all the years and owners. Just pop the cover and take a peek. The gear oil needs changing anyhow. Don has the best answer, here's what it *should* have:
-
there was also an OD drive ratio change that went along with the 21-23 spline output change in (mid)1991 Don, are you thinking the 2wd got the ratio change in 1990 instead of 1991?

NOS Jeep Comanche Bed Side: eBay
jpnjim replied to FarmerBrown5's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
yes it does. :D possibly my favorite possession. wow, mine isn't displayed anywhere near as nice as that  pretty much just hung from the rafters if I had the wall space to put everything together... I'd see about hanging half an MJ :rock on: -
Manual regulators are tough to find, and I don't think anyone makes new ones. If you have a dead spot in yours, it's usually towards the bottom of travel (with the window most of the way down) because the "drive coil" rust/rots at the bottom of the door, and the drive gear can't engage it anymore. The GOOD news is you can take the whole assembly out, and reverse the drive coil so the rust/rotted part is up by the glass, and doesn't need to engage the gear. I did one of mine 3 or 4 months ago (sorry no pictures). Should take an hour or two the first time. The only thing you need is a 1/4" drill bit to drill out the rivets (securing the unit to the door), some decent pliers to pry apart the window attachment bracket at the end of the drive coil off, and then reattach it to the opposite end, (after you slide out the coil and reverse it) and some 1/4-20 nuts and bolts to bolt the unit back into the door.

If you start it in gear with the clutch pedal to the floor does it try to move the truck forward? It really sounds like the clutch is hanging up. Was it like this when you first swapped the AX15 in? Linkage/hydrolic issues are usually the problem, but other things can make the clutch disc hang up and 'stick' instead of cleanly disconnecting.
-
Def sounds like your clutch is not fully disengaging I don't have an AX15, I know my 3550 and my old BA 10-5's all grabbed/released a couple inches above the floor like they should. IIRC, the BA's had a bleeder screw for the hydro clutch, I think the 3550 doesn't have a bleeder, but I don't recall any problem bleeding it/getting the pedal height set. I'd start by trying to bleed the line, then see if there's another reason it's not fully releasing.

4x4 coversion questions ( please help!)
jpnjim replied to JeepDreamer26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This should be the right one, but please do your own research if you decide to go this route; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Cherokee-Wrangler-Dakota-AX15-AMC-2-5L-Bellhousing-94-ext-slave-cyl-type-/401290058095?hash=item5d6ec0596f:g:SvkAAOSwZVlXjFLD&vxp=mtr I could see a small Turbo turning a 2.5L with an AX15 into a fun ride. -
4x4 coversion questions ( please help!)
jpnjim replied to JeepDreamer26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you use a bellhousing from a 2.5L Dakota its designed to take an AX15 or NV3550 transmission. Then you'd have the durability of an easier to find 4.0L transmission behind the 2.5L. -

NOS Jeep Comanche Bed Side: eBay
jpnjim replied to FarmerBrown5's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
$1175 seems high, A passengers side, with the interior panel was $150 on CL a couple months ago. Makes good garage art  BTW it was relisted; http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-1986-1987-1988-1989-1990-1991-1992-Jeep-Comanche-pickup-NOS-bed-side-5659/122398584184?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41376%26meid%3D4b074c26922a412b9402d084ae56a69f%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D122397708463 -

Genssi 80W CREE LED White 1156 Reverse Lights
jpnjim replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm assuming they aren't DOT approved, which is too bad. Yes, No DOT markings. I aimed them down a bit to try to take some of the glare away, and they do have a pretty good beam "cut off", but I think they're still too bright to oncoming traffic. My MJ is a glorified yard truck at the moment, so I'll leave them in for now, till I find something decent that isn't so blinding to other cars. -
I bought my 12 year old son the MJ body kit for Christmas time, but we haven't gotten the scx10 kit yet, where do you guys order your RC stuff though? Thanks!

Military Wrapped Springs With Lift, Group Buy
jpnjim replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hi all, Not sure if this group buy is still adding people or not but I would love a set of MT springs for $170 per side + shipping. Should I just call General Spring and ask to be put on the list, or is posting in this thread enough to get on the list? Thanks! Anything could have been swapped in, but I'd guess for that year and combo it's a 3.07 geared 8.25" axle. 8.25 is bigger than a D35, has C-clips, and a flat bottom. Pics of all the different diff covers have been posted here before, but are easy to find online. You could also look at the brakes. 8.25's usually have small/wide brake drums (9"x2.5") 85-89 Comanches/Cherokees like yours should have come with 10x1.75" drums. You can tell the difference between the two from the outside. D44's would likely have 10"x2.50" drums

Metric Ton Leaf question thread
jpnjim replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
thanks -
Awesome "first car" you're off to a great start. 1995 Manual Transmission XJ? if it's a 4.0L it would have 3.07's if it's a 2.5L it would have 4.10's If it's really a D44, it must have been swapped in my a previous owner. Factory installed XJ Dana 44's were long long gone by 1995, so it's anyones guess what gears it has. More likely it's an Dodge 8.25" axle then with the manual trans, it's 3.07's, or 4.10's depending on which engine it has. Good luck and keep posting pics

Thanks. I think the thing with the MT's is, more weight = better ride  I'm debating General vs Hells Creek, the fast ship time tells me General must have them as an on the shelf item.

Metric Ton Leaf question thread
jpnjim replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
docivy I don't drive the MJ as much as I used to, so the ride is secondary to the weight capacity, but I'm happy(and maybe a little surprised) to hear the ride is good. hornbrod, I am leaning towards Hell Creek as well, but have an open mind. 3" wouldn't be a deal killer, whatever they end up being, I'll deal with. This is for the 2wd "Grandpa' Jeep, it has soft/sagged Rusty's 3" springs up front to level it now (2" lift maybe), I would probably swap coils to stiffen the front/better balance spring rate with the back even if the height is a perfect match. Eagle, I am curious to see who has used a SWB with Metric Ton leaves to full capacity, since, as you said, the factory never offered a SWB MT MJ. This is an on road only Jeep, so I have no need for lift, I did put (old, sagged) front lift springs in after I originally got it, but that was because the back end was so high. It still sits slightly rear high now with the sagged front lift coils, but anything from stock height, to 3" wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as long as I could make the front and rear heights proportional (rear 1-1.5" higher than the front is perfect IMHO). Thank you for the replies so far  -
Hi all, a few questions to the guys who have converted or are converting to metric ton leafs, or to anyone with a factory longbed Big Ton/Metric Ton MJ Where did you get your leafs, and why (General & Hells Creek both carry them). Shortbed or longbed MJ? Do you ever max load them? (2205 rating) How have they held up so far? I'd love to use my shortbed MJ to pick up 1 ton pallets of pellets now and then. It would be a short (non-highway) trip with a 2220lb payload (me+ a ton of pellets) in a shortbed MJ with Metric Ton leafs, a D44, and appropriately rated tires. Anyone?
