Brakes and prop valves, options?
Skorpyo replied to Skorpyo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
By "Later front braking system" are you referring to a later model XJ braking system? I only ask because I upgraded the front D30 to a D30 from a '95 XJ D30 when I did my 4WD conversion. Would this have netted me larger bore calipers in the process? If so w00t! Thanks again! Tim -
Brakes and prop valves, options?
Skorpyo replied to Skorpyo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you Eagle, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear. While I was quite sure what was in my mind was wrong I simply wanted to hear it from folks who know more about this than I. I think the second Wilwood valve will serve my purpose to manage pressure to the rear and I certainly will take her to an open lot to get a feel for the braking pressure and adjust accordingly. And thank you pete and carnuck for your input as well. Tim -
Ok so this is kind of a beating a dead horse question but here goes. I’ve installed an 8.8 with discs, a dual diaphragm 95 booster, have removed the LSV and am now debating what to do next. As I understand it the LSV handled proportioning to the rear brakes and eliminating it comes with the price that should I lose a brake line I’ll effectively lose all braking power if I’ve just plugged the port on the distribution block and am running a single line to the rear from the nose port. So: Am I wrong about the above? Will replacing my distribution block with a Wilwood 260-11179 be my best option? Would I be better served to install a Wilwood 260-12627 for just the rear line? What might be a better option for me? I'm not planning on doing much more than running around town and maybe the occasional green trail or two and I don’t haul much weight on a frequent basis, except maybe when I’m taking a run to the dump or hardware store. Input appreciated. Thanks! Tim

Congrats! That is a great sounding first vehicle, and definitely seems to be a great truck in good condition. I still pine over my first vehicle, my 88 XJ. I've even gone so far as to pay to see a carfax report to see if it was still on the road. It might be and I keep thinking if I see it for sale, I'm gonna buy it. As far as being a first time Comanche owner I'd recommend a few quick things, the most important of which is to find ANY rust and eliminate it ASAP. Rockers, floorboards, cab corners. If you have the time and ability pull out the carpet and check the entire floor board area and cab corners for rust. Clean it up and use POR-15 or similar to seal them. See if you can find a heat blanket, the kind on later model XJs over the catalytic converter, and install that over yours to reduce the heat on the floorboards as that really increases the likelihood of rust there. Outside of that do the following: 1. Read this thread: 2. Have fun with it, make it yours 3. Lastly, always ALWAYS perform routine maintenance on it when its time, if you do, she'll last you a LONG time.

Relay cover tab replacements?
Skorpyo replied to Skorpyo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Awesome, PM on it's way shortly. Thanks everyone, it definitely is getting tougher to find parts in the JY, unless you're working on a 97+ conversion, haha. -
So the twist tabs for the relay cover went bye-bye in a small accident in the garage and now I need new ones. Outside of a JY find, where can I find the two little twist covers for the relay plate? Thanks.

School me on spring options.
Skorpyo replied to Sir Sam's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Give them a call, before I decided to go SOA I called them and they said they did a line of "lift springs" for the MJs and they could fab up a custom order for me that would net about 3" of lift over stock. The price wasn't what I was looking for ($400) but definitely not terrible. Its worth a shot. -
Yeah, based on the error code I got I don't think it is, but that is just speculation that I shared. I'm sure the admin has a laundry list of stuff to get to and will get around to it. Hopefully sooner than later, though cause I too prefer tapatalk on the phone and ipad.

When I had my old 88 XJ it came with a high idle problem that wasn't only in park, it idles high enough that in drive it would go 25mph without my touching the gas! For me it turned out to be the TPS, but there are a number of things it could be. I found a pretty good link here: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/high-idles-only-operating-temperature-34199/#post389882 that covers a broad array of possible causes. Best of luck and let us know what it turns out to be.

I personally use Tapatalk (but it's not working right now for CC, I don't think the Tapatalk Plugin has been updated to the IPB 4.2 version) but when I had to post photos on Freecycle I had to shrink them. I used a free iOS app called "Reduce" that will resize photos easily. You can set the file-size you want and click "Reduce" and viola, smaller version.

First of all, well done and thank you for the hard work, the site looks great! Is anyone else using tapatalk? I tried to open the site initially and i was not able to log in saying "Invalid username / password". I use a password manager so I know its right. So then I removed it from my homepage on Tapatalk and re-added it. Now I get an error when trying to pull it up that says: "There is a problem with the forum. Please contact the forum admin or try again later. (Code - 2209)" Not a huge deal, but I use tapatalk to post photos so it would be nice to have that work.

Just to throw in another option I went with an explorer 8.8 rear that came with discs, 3.73 gears and a limited slip. They're a bit narrower, but are usually pretty easy to find in junkyards. On the day I got mine I found 3 there, and picked the cleanest of the bunch.

I'll be honest with you in that I'm nearing completion of the 4.5" kit for my MJ right now and my XJ has rusty coils. That being said I have a positive opinion of Rusty's suspension parts and a high opinion of his skid plates. I also have his steering box brace on my XJ. Of his suspension products, they are slightly more affordable and hold up relatively well over time. Application is what is most important, if you're building an off-road rig, and you want the best, you might be better served with other products. Rusty's is a middle to upper end suspension manufacturer whose main issue, as I see it, is that longevity of ride height can't be expected beyond 2-3 years. That being said I think the price point makes up for it and you get your moneys worth for a few years of use. I've bashed the snot out of his XJ engine, tranny and T-case skids on the XJ and they're holding up great but I don't plan on ordering skids for MJ as it won't be wheeled. You could certainly do worse than Rusty's products and yes, you could do better, but it's really a preference of the individual and your long term plans. Just my .02.

Also, I should add that I'm in the Woodbridge area if you decide you wanna wrench on a rig. I've got a 2-car garage and am always willing to help a fellow jeeper. There aren't as many of us in the NoVA area as there used to be. Mostly you'll see JKs and JKUs.

Welcome and from a fellow NoVA member I'd say that's a nice truck but the price point would drive me away. Iv been looking on Facebook marketplace and this one looks nice and isn't that far for a 3rd of the price: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1437657266298012 Just helping out. Best of luck finding a good rig!

Interesting... well I don't plan to have the tires unmounted so I can remove the sensors. They only have 500 miles on them and are being stored in a basement right now. I'd be curious to see if any of the aftermarket setups that use in tire sensors use ones that are the same standard as the mopar units. If so it may sense them as well if there is a "reset and search" function for the system. It's low on my priority list since the MJ still isn't on the road but I'll add it to the "Idea" list and if it comes to fruition I'll report back.
-
So, this may be a dumb question, but after searching around I can't find anyone who talks about doing this... So I picked up JKU tires for the MJ and they have TPMS sensors in them. Question is, is there an aftermarket control unit that can be programmed to read these sensors and then display them? It seems, from research, that many of the manufacturers use standards for the units, it's more an ability for the control unit to "learn" the sensors and then use the data from them. Anyone else try this? I'm just curious as it would be kind of a cool update to the MJ. TIA, Tim

So I figured out that if you see the error message and you right click on it and select "Open image in new tab" it'll show you the photo on photobucket. If people (or admins) can edit the tech articles and move the photos to imgur or other then they can be restored back to the thread. Just a thought... Tim ps. I'd be willing to help do so if more hands make light work. try it out. you should be able to alter that forum now. So I'm not seeing the error any more... Did something change? I checked the first page of articles and all of the photos were showing up fine. If that changes I'll help out, but I don't wanna mess with success. Tim
