http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011 ... -comanche/ Apparently, in Hemmings motor news, we are the resource for MJ knowledge. Read the story... And check out where the "Cult following" link takes you... Rob :brows:

Just kidding. But seriously. Our fearless leader has been MJ-less for sometime now. Yes, he does have a fleet, but none are road worthy at the moment. He's been nipping away where he can, but I would like to get everyone together to bring used parts, hands, bodies, and tools to get the fleet fixed up. A few of us in the WI/IL area had talked about getting out there and lending a hand, but I wanted to open it up to everyone on CC. As for dates, I didn't have any nailed down. I wanted to shoot for June-July when the weather is nice, but not the blistering August stuff yet. Maybe we can spend a full day wrenching, then spend another taking a group trip to the Walter P. Chrysler museum... They actually do have a couple of MJ's on display. Maybe by then my persistence will have payed off and we might actually be able to see the Thunderchief. Pete's got some extra sleeping room at his place (I have already confirmed). I was thinking a weekend, get there Friday, all hang out/meet, day wrenching, then the trip into Detroit (Since Pete is so close). Thus far, this is as many Comanche Club member's we have had in one spot: Let's help Pete out, and try to beat the last get together! Anyone else game? Rob

Project Franklin (DD-Towpig-Expedition)

Yep. Park it cold, facing down hill. You want the back of the engine to be the highest point. With it still cold, pull the temperature sender on the back left corner of the head. (Remember that all left / right directions are given as if you are sitting in the drivers seat facing forward). Make sure the bottle is topped off. Start the truck and let it warm up until you start seeing coolant start trickling out the sender hole. Once it starts coming out, put the sender back in, and that will generally do the trick. Rob -

What kind of condition is the pressure bottle on the firewall? The Renix system you have is a pretty solid system, but it does have it's quirks. One of the most troublesome things is the bottle, as it becomes brittle and cracks, not allowing the coolant to maintain pressure. Another is bleeding the system out. That style takes a certain few steps after a good overheat or coolant drain to get rid of air pockets. Rob  -
RV plus is just the name of the package... There is basic, which I have, and RV plus. At least in my area: http://chicago.aaa.com/page/Membership- ... 65/665.uts Thinking about upgrading to the RV plus to get more than 5 miles before I have to pay. Rob

Chevy Drop shackles off of Ebay can net a bit of lift, and have a couple of positions in some sets. Rob

I love AAA for the towing... Lets face it, a lot of us keep our Jeeps running on hopes and prayers... Its nice to just get scooped up and taken home for free. I've been contemplating getting the RV plus, which extends the free tow out to 100 miles or so. Rob

Going to have to consult the dealer on this one. You need something there to make it think it's still there, and there is no weight on it. It's looking for the weight sensor in the seat. Since the BCM doesn't even get a reply, it tosses a code. Usually also disabling the airbag system also. As for inspection, I would say that it would depend on the state. We don't have that in IL, but from what I hear from other states, that would be a fail. Rob

Weaksauce... We used to have a Sicard snowblower in the town I work for. We used it to load snow into dump trucks after windrowing it into the street. Big motha's. Here are some Sicards off the net. Ours was a retired airport rig... The thing was beyond repairable when we got it... So, it didn't last long in a municipal environment. Now that's a horror movie truck. Rob

Tried calling your local PD? In the town I work for, if you lock your keys in your car, call the non emergency number, they will send over the Community Service Officer with a slim jim kit, and get you in there for free. Rob

87 Comanche project....lots of work to do

Looks like it used to be a Chief... Damn shame... What color was it originally? Rob -
Nice trade. Easily one of my favorite Jeeps. On another note, I always seem to forget how "pint sized" the older military spec Jeeps are... Kinda neat. One of my bucket list items is to fix an old CJ/Military Jeep and drive the country... Only after I do it with an MJ first though. Lets not be stupid. Rob :D

How rusty are your floors? On previous MJ's in a pinch, I have reached up through the floor and unlocked the truck that way. Rob :dunno:
-
If you have wing windows, they are practically another door. Pop them open and reach in to unlock. Rear slider? Push in on it a bit, as you slide it, they sometimes clear the latch. Other than that, the door seals are usually crap, and you can fish a hanger in to unlock the truck. Oh, and: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12745 Rob

Comanche cargo light with switch $50

Interested selling any? Rob -
I see you are in Michigan. Plan on breaking every one of those little bolts off. I have a California truck in IL, and I still broke nearly all of them. Rob
-
Not entirely true. With a properly adjusted trackbar, the turning radius will be equal both ways. With the axle shifted underneath the truck, you get less of a throw in turning one direction, and more than standard the other way. Rob :smart:

Now that I have a chance to sit down at a keyboard, instead of a phone, here is my condensed version. Pull wheels/tires Pull brakes Pull Wheel bearings Pull axle shafts Pull diff cover Remove bearing caps Pry out the carrier Use whatever you can find to get down the tubes, and knock each seal into the middle Clean surfaces Put seals in by reversing the knockout procedure, except now you will be driving them in, So you will pound the passenger through the drivers side and in, and opposite for the drivers side. Install carrier and tighten caps to roughly 55 ft lbs Install diff cover Install axle shafts Install wheel bearings Install brakes Install wheels/tires Fill differential. That easy. :ack: Its really a walk in the park. Just kinda involved. Don't let it intimidate you. The part that gets most people is torquing the caps, but you can always rent a torque wrench. Rob :D
