Anticipate what will break on your car and stock up on parts at RockAuto. When I put an order into RockAuto, I usually buy random odds and ends and shelve them until I need them. Make your own parts store.

Since I won't be going anywhere with this anytime soon... https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzTWL2t-sbKdNkRCQ056QUJZMVk Have at it. I did an RFQ for three vendors I use through work and the pricing isn't very attractive until you start ordering Qty 100 or more.

Alexia, Big thanks for getting this forum up to modern standards, but an even bigger thank you for putting up with everyone who is poo-pooing and nitpicking the new forum. I got a glimpse under the hood of the old forum and it had lots of issues. Its simplicity was ultimately its downfall as it wasn't able to keep itself up to date. Oh, and that huge spike in members...that was courtesey of the old forum and it's primitive default theme that was unable to handle a recaptcha from 2005 that would have, at the very least, increased the security of the site and decreased the amount of spam users registering for the site.

I have CAD files that were designed in SolidWorks. I can export to many formats, but you'll need to do the legwork to tell me what you need. My model is not complete and I know for a certainty that my hole spacing is off. In an effort to avoid an interference fit I made the holes oversized, which is a very poor way of correcting an uncertainty/error. I no longer have the equipment to continue with this venture, hence why I fell off the face of the Earth. Maybe one day I'll get it all back, but it won't be any time soon.

1991 4.0L daily driver/weekend wheeler build

Considering the OP didn't want to line up the timing mark on the crank pulley to determine if the #1 cylinder was at top dead center, I highly suspect that he would not want to convert the 4.0L coil rail to a coil-on-plug setup.

Call local repair shops and ask if they still service R12 vehicles. I have seen a few shops around me that do it. The prices are slightly higher than R134A, probably because of all the hoopla and paperwork they have to go through to be licensed and obtain the stuff. I believe a R12 recharge was $55 at the repair shop near me, to give you a starting point. The recharge may get you by for the rest of the summer if your A/C still works somewhat, but these are CLOSED systems, meaning if it needs to be recharged it's because its leaking. A lot of places will try to sell you on a stop-leak substance but in my experience, it never works. -
All signs seems to be pointing to a battery that isn't holding much of a charge. The 4.0L's with the coil rail (like yours) need a minimum voltage to stay running or else no sparky. The Jeep probably ran for a little until it drained the battery and that's when it stalled. Most auto parts stores will do a free load test on your battery. If it turns out to be bad, pop a new one in there. If you're on a tight budget, thank the auto parts person for testing the battery and take it to your nearest Walmart. They have the cheapest prices on new batteries that I've seen. Not the greatest quality, but it'll get you going again.

I thought I did. I know I have some pictures somewhere of the small modifications I did to get this to work, but I think they may be on my computer back in my shop in NJ...over 150 miles away, but I'll see if I can dig something up. With the method I used, you will lose the automatic "spring back" of the seat i.e. when you have the seat fully reclined and then just pop the lever up and it somes shooting upward. You'll have to now manually pull the seat forward to the position that you want it in. In an MJ cab with such limited space, I have not found it to be a nuisance - basically set it in the position that you want and forget it. It has been a while since I did the mod, but I recall myself having a couple of ideas on how to retain the "spring back" function. Also, you'll need to modify the plastic trim a bit to allow that massive toothed gear to slide out the back (you can see it protruding in my picture. I don't have the trim on in that pic). -

I'm 6'0" and I mounted a pair of '99 4-door XJ buckets near the stock location and I don't feel they're too tall. If you really want to sit in an MJ that's too tall then try a set of the "rocketship" reclining seats from a 2-door XJ from the mid-to-late 80's mounted to MJ bucket seat mounts. I did that in my MJ Pioneer and I'll almost hit the roof over some bumps. It's also really easy to get the 4-door seats to flip forward: -
Thus far, it has passed the sun test. I wasn't able to get the carpet in before I went on vacation for a week, so it sat on my side porch baking in the hot sun. Got home and realized I had forgot to put it in my shop and figured it would have been all kinds of messed up since we had lots of rain, too. Much to my surprise it looked the same as when I left it. I still haven't gotten it in the truck since I decided that with the interior apart, now was as good a time as any to tackle the water leaks that likely contributed to the discoloration of the carpet in the first place. I'm impressed with the paint so far, but the real test will be getting some traffic on the carpet to see how well the color holds up. I'll keep this thread updated.

Sadly that doesn't work with the big ugly Bubbas that tend the check out points down here. :( There is a yard by where I used to live in NJ that was bought out by a woman, painted pink and renamed "Junkyard Barbie." Most of the time the you got the big Bubba or the older-than-dirt guy behind the counter, but on special days like "Customer Appreciation Day" the owner would pop her head out: And on very rare occasions, the daughter would show her......face: Despite the fact that I was more than likely better looking than the majority of junkyard goers with missing teeth/ears/eyes/hair, there was absolutely NO flirting with the owner to get a discount, but I enjoyed her presence all the same. A nice change of pace from the usual guy behind the counter.

I was down in Ft. Lauderdale, FL for a wedding when the storm hit us back at home. It was MUCH cooler in Florida than it was back at home. It actually felt nice to be outside for a change. I'm in Queenstown, MD and we didn't get anything too bad around here - I heard we lost power for about 36 hours but I'm on the Eastern Shore so my power comes from a different source. Plenty of people at my office are from Annapolis and surrounding areas and thy got smacked pretty good. I know of one guy that still didn't have power as of this past Friday. Our president allowed those without power to camp out in the office until power returned, but I suppose everyone had too much pride as they went back home every night to 95 degree temps, 75-100% humidity and no A/C or fans. Don't care who you are or where you're from - that just plain SUCKS.

Sent you a PM with my e-mail addy too. I use SolidWorks, which will import a .dwg as a 2D drawing, but it's probably going to be all kinds of messed up scale-wise, but we may get lucky. Now, if only the "foe" function on this forum would also block quoted comments made by ignored user...

I'll take a look at your models. What format are they in? And what metal fab shop in Baltimore did you used to work for? Good chance my current employer has used them in the past if they were something more than a garage shop.

Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
terrawombat replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
So far my biggest complaint about driving a diesel (picked up a VW TDI a couple weeks ago) is how the fueling station put the diesel pump right between two gas pumps with no way to squeeze in between if the two gas pumps are occupied. Although it is fun sitting next to semi's at the fuel pumps and having the truckers stare down at you and think you're an idiot for putting diesel in your gasoline automobile. -
Just from years of owning and browsing for sale ads on Craigslist, Autotrader, eBay, etc., I would say that carpet was more common than the rubber floor matting. My '88 SporTruck had rubber matting, my '88 Pioneer has carpet and my '92 Sport has carpet. I believe the carpet was optional on base/SporTruck/Sport models and standard on pretty much every other trim. The only options for carpet are finding OEM carpet from someone selling it or in a junkyard, aftermarket carpet that will require a lot of trimming (there are several companies that make them - do a google search), or find the carpet out of a Cherokee and do some trimming. I have installed aftermarket carpet in two different vehicles (Jeep Wrangler and Mitsu 3000GT) and it's not something I'd want to do again. So, with that in mind, I chose to keep my original OEM carpet and gave it a facelift: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=36061

Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
terrawombat replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Yikes. When I saw your initial figure for the rebuild I suspected it was a little low. Not because I have experience with the pumps in the Renault's, but because anytime you mention injection pump and repair/rebuild/replace in the same sentence, you are talking at least a grand. Nice to see another fellow CC'er step up to the plate and help out - thank you Phil! So, if Phil's brand new injection pump cures everything that appears to be wrong with this engine, is he gonna let you buy it off of him or are you going to scour the waayyyyyy back of every dusty parts counter shelf at every Jeep dealer in the country looking for another? -
Lets see whos got the most miles on there mj

Don't think he has that truck anymore. -
Hey Rob, automan, can you have your guy get me pics of this?
terrawombat replied to shelbyluvv's topic in The Pub
I'm on my phone so I can't really do a good job searching, but I thought there was a guy on here that had a build thread for a white MJ Laredo and it was a 1990. I was skeptical at first, but he's in Canada so I figured Jeep did something goofy for our northern pals. -
Pretty self explanatory, but figured I'd post up some pictures with some of my initial positive results. Good condition OEM carpet is hard to come by and I didn't feel like messing around with aftermarket carpet - I've installed those before on other cars and it's never fun. So, pull your carpet, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum, light shampoo to get stains out. No amount of cleaning was going to get the faded carpet out: So, I bought three cans of this stuff (roughly $25 shipped): 1.75 cans later: Closeup: Waiting on it to dry and going to use the rest of the second can for touch up. Hope to have the carpet installed again by the end of the week. I will update this thread with more pictures and keep you informed on how this holds up. So far, it looks 2X better for about a third of the cost of and a quarter of the effort of getting a new aftermarket carpet.
