280ZX Hood Vents
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You're right. They are kinda small, I'll get them on tomorrow, then I'll grind each of the slots open with a grinding disc. They're solid fiberglass and should give fairly clean cuts. I've got another 5.9 GC but it would just be mean to steal the vents off of it. I'd rather go that route because of the drip pans but this is all I've got and they cost me a whole 3 dollars. -
Is this a factory topper? Introducing Project Chicken Man!

Umm, I don't know chit about paint and body. So you're saying I shouldn't get some of that rattle can clear coat and have at it? :D -

It should clean up nicely. Only one crack in the drivers seat and one in the console. The dash is perfect. When I get time I'll take the seats out and go to town on the carpet. I'm thinking the paint will buff out and I can get someone to spray some clear coat on it. If the price is right. -

I'm digging this truck, the blind spots from the topper are a little annoying though. The trucker mirrors help a lot, much better than the smaller joystick versions. -

I think is about 8" or a little more? You're guess is as good as mine. I did measure from the axles to the frame rails and got 8.5" but parked next to my new stock MJ, it looks about 12" higher. Probably due to the 35s. Yep, I think I'm going with these... I also picked up a few things at the JY. Finally found a headliner board. I'll have to fiberglass this thing because its practically falling apart. Also picked up a renix sanden compressor for future OBA. The little ARB electric compressor isn't fast enough. Got some badges, side vents, and some extra marker lights. I left the tail lights on that MJ because they were toast. Ooh, also picked up a fan. One of these days I'll follow Hornbrod's lead and get a SPAL controller for the fan. Till then, I'll use a manual switch and relay. -

Yeah, it fits perfect. The back hatch meets the top of the tail gate right on the money. Just wondering because I couldn't find a manufacturer on it. -

Just picked up this little gem while at the JY. :D They took it in with a bad alternator and no key. :D They swapped in a new alt and cut a key and it runs great. :D I was in line at the check out counter and spied it in the back part of the yard. :D First thing that caught my eye was the 5 leaf pack, a quick inspection revealed a D44! :D After a little haggling, I left with it.... :D :D :D 88' Pioneer, 2wd, Puegeot BA-10/5, Metric Ton, Cooling package, Buckets, Topper, Rhino lined bed, no rust, awesome paint except the top clear coat got sun baked. It hasn't been inspected since 08' so I imagine it sat in the Texas sun since then. I like the short throw of the BA-10 but I think the slave is weak, it only disengages the clutch right at the floor. The engine is completely unmolested and it didn't even think about getting hot on the 103 degree 100 mile trip home. :D It got 19 mpgs on the way home. :D It did suffer a bit of blow by but no biggie. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I may sell it or perhaps sell Dad's F250 to recoup the cost and make it a Father/Son project. But this one will stay stock. Factory Topper or no? -
JY picks, thinking about installing these to vent some under hood heat.... These are smaller than the regular 280 vents and about half the size of Lebaron vents, but I couldn't find either at the JY. Also, I'd have to cut additional slots on one of them, left side, to allow more air out. I think they'd look good painted and installed. Although I'm more concerned with effectiveness than looks. Another pic I found with these on an XJ:

Basic Engine Intake/Exhaust Maintenance
Comanche County replied to MJCrusader's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You may know it or not, but if you pull the injectors do not reuse the o-rings. You're risking leaky injectors and thus an engine fire if you don't use new o-rings. -
Most reliable/unreliable engine
Comanche County replied to LobsterThief's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You buy the truck when its available and take whatever engine is in it. MJs were created by God for each of us, XJs were created so we could have a choice of engines to easily transplant into our MJs. :smart: -
I went there a few years ago, they were filming "Pinks all out". Good times! The Mopar fans ruled the day!

Well, I thought some of them were named after one of the Jeep Engineer's four daughters: Shamika, Tamika, Yvonne, and Kiki Jones. SJ, TJ, YJ, and KJ. Kiki always was a a little fart.

Just read through the wikipedia page on the MJ. It's been a long time since I last read it. It now has CC all over it...even listed as a reference 3 times. Plus as I read through it this time I could tell the handy work of my CC brethren. :D. It's pretty good!

BA10 to AX15 swap didn't work.
Comanche County replied to Clay's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Where is the clutch engaging when you press the pedal? With a bad slave that progressively gets weaker usually it engages further toward the floorboard until it won't engage (think "disengage" the clutch) at all and shifting is difficult or impossible. Where in your pedal travel does your clutch disengage/engage? Where do you feel the most pedal pressure, top or bottom ? -

I'm thinking the slave is bad. -
In no particular order: Rear 44 - What is the Dana-Spicer p/n for MJ/XJ/TJ Dana 44 rear axle shafts? Also, I hear Warn discontinued their full float kit for the XJ 44, does anyone still make one? I may get Superior's alloy axle shafts . Haven't broken one yet, just planning ahead. Cooling - The Jeep was running hot while wheeling this weekend, it was 103 degrees. I still have the closed system and it works great in normal driving and in traffic on hot days like this. Eventually I may go to an open style system and lose the bottle but its working good for now, always runs at the thermostat temp while driving. But for hot weather wheeling, I think hood vents and an electric fan will help a lot. I have a non A/C MJ with an A/C delete pulley. There's no electric fan. I picked one from the JY and plan to install an HO thermostat housing, add a temp switch of some sort to it that will control the activation of the fan. Preferably at 220 degrees like a stock A/C equipped vehicle. I could add a manual switch but I don't want a crazy amount of switches in the interior and I want it to be automatic. I know someone has done this, should be easy with the right temp switch and a relay. Can someone point me in the right direction here - p/n for the switch? Renix 4.0 Power loss - On the way home there was a sudden power loss, like the the hp went from 177-120. I lost the crisp throttle response the engine usually has and with 35s and 4.56s it was hard to maintain 2500 rpms on the way home. That's only while driving, while stationary it revs fine. Usually in fifth gear I can easily cruise at 2500-3000 rpms and accelerate as needed. But 2250 rpms was about all she had. I'm going out of town so I won't have time to investigate this till next week but I'll start troubleshooting the ignition and sensors (CTS, MAP, TPS, fuel pressure etc). Its running smooth just lost the power and throttle response. Could be bad gas, maybe a clogged cat, its the original. Worst case is a bad head gasket, its not blowing oil like last time maybe its between the cylinders. I'll check the compression too. Just throwing this out there in case someone else has had this happen too. :wrench:

Here's a couple of pics from wheeling at the Bridgeport OHV park in Bridgeport, TX. http://www.cityofbridgeport.net/index.aspx?nid=322 I didn't want to wheel alone so I linked in with a group I ran into being led by Mike Leary from Central Overland Travels, he had a really capable Land Cruiser. He was hosting a intermediate 4x4 class and was gracious enough to let me tag along free, really cool guy. The group had a couple of nicely built Wranglers and well as a foreign contingent of rides. Also there was King Mcneill of Texas Overland Travels, another really cool guy with a nicely built overland JK. Here's their websites: http://www.texasoverlandoutfitters.com. Didn't get as many pics as I wanted especially some of a real nasty hill climb at the end which broke my track bar bracket. But it was a lot of fun and I was able to limp to a local welding shop to get back on the road. Needless to say, an onboard welder is going on the Jeep soon. I was running 8 psi in all the tires. With the bias 4ply Maxxis I still didn't get a good bulge. I was afraid of popping a bead because the truck is well over 4,500 lbs. I'll try 5 psi next time. The truck flexes so well the 35s tuck nicely under the front fenders but I need more bump stops. When the driver's side compresses fully the upper control arm was getting banged by the rotating front pinion yoke. Still need another 3-4" of bump stops. It was 103 degrees and the MJ did well except when down in a creek bed with no wind blowing, the temp started hovering about 230 degrees. I was popping the hood to get some air circulating. It was a good time, however on the way home I noticed a significant power loss and only got 12.2 mpgs to the house. I won't have another chance to investigate it till next week but I'm hoping its either a simple spark or fuel issue or a clogged cat....and not a head gasket. It just lost the great throttle response it had....could be the 215K on the engine, maybe its just getting tired but I doubt it. -
106 on the thermometer at the house today, wish the MJ had an AC, thank God I've got a ZJ though.

I went with selectable lockers because I'd like to use the MJ as a DD if I had to, drive across the country, or drive on snow and ice. Reasons not to go with an automatic locker. I know a lot guys use auto lockers up north and adjust their driving style accordingly but I wouldn't chance it, just me. Since I'm down South (for the moment) it wouldn't matter too much but who knows where I'll end up in the future. I'd say if you won't ever have to drive it in winter conditions and intend your MJ as trail only vehicle then I'd go with the Detroit - I think ARB is the way to go for selectables -- IMHO.
