Looks like the same residential plow set up I had on mine. Not too bad really if you're not trying to push wet snow. I also ovaled out my three bumper holes where the plow mounts bolts up to the stock bumper mounts. I'd invest in some 1/4" reinforcement plates or else that mounting bracket with the two big mounting rods could rip right off.

Very cool truck I like it, but those track bar and drag link angles look bound already.

rd30/rd100 ARB locker differences
Comanche County replied to cody4359's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can download the parts lists for both models in pdf from the ARB website. I went with a new gen 2 but still have a gen 1 ARB that I'm keeping for future use maybe. -
Thanks Eagle!

I sold all that stuff to a guy doing a Willys truck resto. I kinda miss the flathead six, wish I'd have kept one of the engines.

If anyone is interested, I'm posting the build of this CJ3A here: http://cj-3a.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1315774757/0 I'm learning a lot about the old Jeeps and it's coming together slowly but surely...its an outdoor, shade tree, southern dirt road rebuild, teeming with rural backwoods majesty the likes of which William Faulkner would have been proud to chronicle. It's echoed by the passing trains, nearby bellowing cows and yelping chickens, and the too early in the morning clank of beer bottles, if only I could play a banjo.

Spent 15 months attached to them in Iraq. They serve actual real alcoholic beer in the chow hall on their birthday,,,,,which is why I love Marines, Semper Fi!

86' XLS Comanche Questions
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looks like the motor is locked. I put a battery on her today and the starter was engaging fine but it wouldn't budge. I couldn't turn it with a socket on the crank either. Big bummer. Found a 1995 Camaro 3.4 on CL for $250. I'm thinking about it. Also none of the lights except for the headlights came on and the windows didn't work.....darn it. :( Gonna hit pause on this for the time being. Too many irons in the fire right now. But I think it'll be a gift for my old man in a couple of months if I can get it going. He's been wanting a Comanche for a while, the last one I got for him was a standard and he's more of an auto guy. -
86' XLS Comanche Questions
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's got 4.10s in it, I'm going to fiddle with it today and see if she'll turn over. Yeah I'm thinking the 3.4 route if it won't run. Fubar, did you convert yours to R134? -
86' XLS Comanche Questions
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Jim, that makes sense. I haven't seen one with the chrome bezel like that. Unfortunately no Rob, she did have a grandson driving a 80s jacked up Chevy truck with a 400+hp 454, but I'm not into Chevy guys, :D -
86' XLS Comanche Questions
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
5 bones. It still had the factory fresh spare under the back too. I bought it from a very nice elderly lady who I spotted driving a red 88' MJ. Reference the recent post on how to approach someone to buy their MJ, I just stalked her on the road until she pulled over at her destination. Very nice lady, I fixed her clogged blow by tube, then did a free safety inspection on her MJ. She loved it because it drove good, got good mileage and she could get in and out of it easily. She was about 75 years old and said there's no way she's selling it and it had 205K on it. I am now her dedicated MJ mechanic, she'll call me anytime she needs any help with it. Anyway, she had two other "junk" MJs she bought to keep her red one up and running, the blue one being one of them. Here's a shot of the back of her red 88', 4.0, 5speed, 2WD. -
I've got one of mine hitting 200, but I can't get the pic off the camera.....

Wait a minute, where did you get that instrument panel?

Just picked up the 86' XLS today. Long bed, 2.8 V6, 904, NP207, D30 disco/D35 (I was hoping for an AMC20), factory roll bar with lights, fog lights, AC, D35, 113K, electric windows woohoo  , motor isn't running now though although I'm told it was recently "overhauled". Oh yeah, NO RUST! Questions: - Is the switch on the right side of the steering column pictured below the factory switch for the roll bar lights? - 3.55 gears right? - I haven't hooked a battery to it yet so I don't know if the windows work. I figure the window motors are the same as XJs? Were there any model/year changes for the motors? My previous MJs were all manual. (just planning ahead) - I know a guy with several running 2.8 XJs, if I don't grab one of his I'll go with a 3.4 swap. There are several 2.8-3.4 swap pages out there, just wondering if any of you guys have done it and is it really worth the trouble and money? - I just got it home and I don't know what I'll do with it yet, my brain is swirling...Like Mr. Hedley Lamarr said, "My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives."

So what's the difference between a Pioneer and an Eliminator again? :D

Now that's pretty! It's missing the relay cover though.

How do you approach somebody to buy their Jeep
Comanche County replied to 87Warrior's topic in The Pub
Smooth. -
Still too high..probably gonna do away with the 4" lift chebby springs for stock chebby springs because... Image Not Found THE JEEP IS TOO D&^$ HIGH! Nice!

As far as the MJ goes, I think the pics on the right are clearer. But I think your playing with my mind.

I hope Daisy is okay! :D

Yeah, thought that engine looked funny, then saw the underside pic. I wonder what made the airbags go off, doesn't look like there's bad front end damage. I say go for it if the frame is good. You've certainly fixed worse cases. Easy transmission and airbag replacement at best, at worst the engine and TC might be done for.

Had 3 5.9 ZJs. Worst MPG was 16.5 normal and 17 flat on road trips. Best was 21 MPGs and that was the fastest one. Never had a problem with the D44A and the mileage on the three ranged from 155k-213K. I think a TRUSSED, non-abused D44A is a decent axle. With a tow load of 4-7K they all got around 11 MPGs. Currently, my DD 5.9 has 190K and got 16.7 on a 300 mile trip yesterday and today. The VCs were long gone when I got them. There are several DIY pages on various forums for either replacing the VC or swapping in a 231or 242, its not that difficult. Only bad ZJ of the bunch is the 96' Orvis I got for my parents with a 5.2 at 130K. It burns oil faster than old spindletop, and smokes bad enough at start up to break through a WWI German trench line. Other than that it runs great  . I like the ZJs because they're comfy IMO and there's lots of parts interchangeability with XJs/MJs.

Your new belt is probably ruined by the conditioner. That stuff is a rip off and will make the squeal worse . Remove the belt (keep it as a spare in the bed of the truck or under the seats somewhere), visually check for pulley alignment from the side, see if there's a bent bracket or other cause to the misaligned pulleys. Clean every inch of pulley surface with brake or carb cleaner and wipe all pulleys very well. Install a new belt and don't let any fluids touch it. There are some old timers tricks that may work....holding a bar of soap on the belt while its running, same thing with a wire brush, none of that worked for me. The only thing that took care of my squealing belt was what I described above. Go with the Goodyear Gatorback belt, worth the $85 and comes with a lifetime warranty for free replacement. I've cleaned everything and had two new belts in a row squeal right from the store. Also ensure you've got the belt tight enough. Should have less than an inch of play when you press down on it. There's also a special tool that checks belt tension to see if you're in spec. I believe its fairly inexpensive.

Need a replacement clutch line
Comanche County replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Terrawombat in the above link has the right idea for a SS line but I need the truck running tomorrow and couldn't wait for parts to come in the mail.
