I was in his shoes once, pregnant GF no real home.... Then single and paying for child support next 18 years... I'd have to say I didn't start using common sense till I was over thirty, sounds like he has a ways to go... Probably puttin Rockwells under his truck with the money that he has coming anyways.... Gotta keep priorities straight damn it!

Every one I got has hit that mark years ago....and nothing has stock drive trains any more...

Thou shall remember every MJ in a 20mi radius, in case one of them comes up for sale or is wrecked.

I have a couple regulators in stock getting ready to go in the 87, it would be good if they could be R&Rd or or made to work better before install, grease and or oil and if they be disassembled and is it recommended. I see the gear housing looks like its riveted together, any benefit to taking it apart there. FWIW, the drivers regulator on the 88 really sucks when it's extreme cold, I'd be interested in a DIY window regulator repair if anybody knows of one. I know it could be pulled and replaced, but what about when they become real expensive and no more can be found for cheap?

The tank is leaking, and not the locking ring? Sounds suspect cause you said it leaks when 1/2 to 3/4 full, right about the level of the ring and pump assy....

don't be snide, everybody doesn't have their own "cruiser 54.com page, aint been a service manager forever, give them a break. I worked with daughters BF yesterday on his XJ, my job is teach and help, not make him feel how smart I think I am and how much I know about XJs. Never once asked him if it was "that difficult to comprehend". Shame to say that. Thought being snide and smart mouthed is not what this site is about.

HIGH idle, white smoke.
64 Cheyenne replied to RedTurtle's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Blue smoke from exhaust = burning oil, rings etc Black smoke = too much fuel, bad carb, injector ect White smoke with accompanying burned paint smell = coolant getting in combustion chamber. -
Another overheating nightmare

"cleaning" a dirty Track-lok diff?
64 Cheyenne replied to 81Chero's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Your talking about just the carrier? If so I'd car wash it, dry with compressed air, call it good unless there is visible signs of damage like worn spider gears etc. I would not take it apart unless you are sure you have all your ducks in a row.... -
^^^^ Filler neck conversion? FWIW, when I did mine I found that the upper radiator hose is tapered, meaning the inlet/outlet sizes on the hoses are different diameter, I had a hard time gettin the filler neck installed into the upper hose {was a b*t*h, but I got it), don't they make this adapter with different inlet and outlet diameters to ease installation?
-
So whats your starting point? Year, engine etc. Pics? Lots of good info here, and welcome

^^^^ This is what I did, short of going HO radiator I believe this is the best way to go. don't care for the aftermarket plastic or metal tanks because you still keep all the funky hose routing. Reasons for converting: straight shot for heater hoses, simplified hose routing, less hose connections that can leak, and the cost difference between a metal tank, stock plastic, and the hose filler neck. So if you gonna fix it, why keep it obsolete?

What motor oil are you guys using?
64 Cheyenne replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Soooo true, my big problem is dealing with the empty shells -
IMO, nuthin wrong with the Renix system, beyond technical differences, I like the fact that there is much info available on troubleshooting individual components with a multimeter VS the HO system where you plug in or flash for a trouble code that suggests where to start looking. Both systems are light years ahead of carburation. Two things would make me purposefully ditch the Renix system, a trashed unrepairable harness where I'd do a HO conversion with parts from 94 down (no air bag), and/or a 2nd gen conversion.

Blasphemy! ^^^ Get a rope! Just kiddin....Here I was, sittin all happy hoping they would call it a Comanche, if they did, then the value of my MJ would go up because of the renewed interest in the "old" Comanche. Now I'm scared...., hope I'm not gonna be shamed:(

I know they rust, but I think that the issue is not rust through, but the perception that they are hard to come by and needed as a separate part needed for bucket seat conversions. Some people don't realize that the bracket they need is already attached to their bench seat...

88 comanche easy engine swap?
64 Cheyenne replied to abehuyser's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
"oily residue on the air filter"... there's a write up for that. "Cooling system issues I don't believe it's in the radiator."...Condition of the pressure bottle? ANY loss of pressure from the tiniest leak in the pressure bottle and cooling system will cause problems with cooling, if the pressure bottle does not look new, I'd suggest replacing it or convert to closed cooling system, and yes there are write ups for that also. -
88 comanche easy engine swap?
64 Cheyenne replied to abehuyser's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
abehuyser, you might want to put a little more info about your vehicle, tires/gears etc, and the condition of its current engine. There are other performance, mpg options besides an engine swap if your current engine is in good shape.....unknown quote: "Hands down, best bang for your buck is gears" -
Load leveling system( air shocks)
64 Cheyenne replied to Streetwedg's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don, from an engineering standpoint, although I'm not an engineer, just makes sense, I believe this system was sold for the XJ because it would only carry the occasional extra load, the leveling system allowed the soccer mom the extra level of convenience of not having head lights out of aim, drooped rear end etc. The extra "load" was transferred to the "frame" through the air shocks, via the lower shock mount (usually single shear) and the upper shock mount, which isn't really a suspension load bearing area. I have to agree with daking, it would have been sweet if MJs came stock this way. -
When it comes to animals on the road, especially at high speed, dog, deer, whatever..... sorry, I "stay the course" rather than risk total loss of control and something catastrophic happening by trying to swerve then over correcting. Cows, horses, moose, bridge abutments...whole nuther story.
