i want to tune up the mj as soon as it's above 30. it's too cold to spend the time checking it out right now so i thought i'd just ask so i can be prepared. it's an 87 2.5 auto 4x4 with a/c and cruise. i was wondering how to get at the first spark plug. i looked at it once and it looked like that plug is under the ac compressor. is there a trick i should know about? what spark plugs work best have you found (specific brand and plug number). i normally use bosch platinums but they don't work in every motor. is the idle adjustable? What's the best setting? where is the fuel filter? is it a pretty easy job? i could go out and check my book, but that's all the way in the garage and it's 10 below. i can stay warm if i ask on here. :clapping:

:agree: Steam will go places water will never get to,I even go as far as washing engines when they are cold as not to create steam.Hot water doesnt clean any better than cold.I try to stay away from the throttle body area and the distributor a little splash is ok just don't drown them. A clean engine is a happy engine. :D :agree: i hate working on dirty ones. take the time once to get it clean, than keep it clean. i hate working on dirty engines. i clean mine regularly, the hard way. i like a clean engine bay. most my vehicles have dress up kits (it looks nicer and the braiding helps keeps stuff from cutting hoses.

ok, here i go I don't mean to offend anyone): i have a detailing business and have for about 10 years. i have been detailing since the mid 80's. i have run a detail center at a ford/subaru/porsche/audi/mercedes/vw dealership. i personally quit using steam on engines as they added more computers to vehicles. i have regular customer still from the 80's and have seen some damage to the electronics in some of the cars. most dealerships use a high pressure washer with high temp steam and a degreaser like simple green (though usually an off brand because simple green is so expensive) diluted 3-1 with water(1 part water) or more. when it's done, they usually use clear and black spray paint to make things look perfect. the clear paint does yellow and start flaking off eventually though. what i do now (and recommend) is a spray the engine compartment with a degreaser (i use simple green brand), lightly rub the upper areas or even scrub bad spots, than hose off with normal hose pressure. i will use a pressure washer on motors i am specifically asked to do or if i have an oily engine i have to work on, but only in a few cases. motors and electronics are made to withstand splashing water, they are not made to withstand water coming at 1300 or more psi, and worse steam. steam is worse as it seeps into every nook and cranny and starts to damage things. it will take it's toll on everything over time and really reduces the life of electronics. if you don't believe me, just look at how much more auto companies are doing to seal/cover the electronics. some motors, etc hold up to steaming better than others. i just don't recommend it. i know everyone above will say it's fine, but i have 24 years experience with it and have seen the damage. you see the damage more if you have the return customers or own the vehicle. parts are expensive (especially electronics) and you don't want to ruin anything if you can help it. another helpful tip is to never, never do a german car engine. not only are the parts too expensive, they just don't do well with steaming. the motors are great (i'm and audi man) but for some reason steaming them causes problems. just my 2 cents. :D

just to add my opinion on stabalizers and such, i recommend seafoam over the stabil. it stabalizes great and prevents varnish and gum better. plus, it cleans things up when you start using the vehicle again. i love the stuff and have been using it since the 80's. i use it in my vehicles that are stored or sit for long periods as well as the mower, snowblower, the clubs mowers, everything. i also add a can to the fuel every 3 months to keep things clean. for those of you that have to smog test, i guess it can help a vehicle pass (no experience with this though).

instead of the -20 we usually have this time of year. i made good use of it. i fixed the plow for the tractor and did some snow pushing. note to self, don't try to lift a 350 pound plow and complete hitch set up a week after having an angiogram. no damage, but i hurt. i'll probably go out and do some more snow removal tomorrow before the game. it's supposed to be in the upper teens. as i said, anything above -20 is nice for this time of year. hope everyone has a good weekend. enjoy the game!!!

:hmm: so if you do the leaf spring, what will the ride be like? how does it effect the load capacity? also, is it a good idea to level the truck instead of keeping the rear a little higher if you do haul alot? just curious, i think i'm going to make some changes come spring. :ack:

that wouldn't be a good thing. airbags deploying while you're trying to wreck a fleeing vehicle. that's just not a good thing! i was kinda surprised at how this one was tied into everything (it was a crown vic by the way). it was attached to a large metal chunk welded into the frame, then the skid plate (and a very heavy duty one at that) was bolted to the same brace at the front. i attached to where the brace met the frame. there was a small opening there to get the strap through. of course i had to set it up and pull it so i wouldn't damage the bumper. the push bar was just slid into the brace that mounts to the frame and held by 2 smaller bolts on each side. it defenitly would've pulled right off if i hooked to that. i'm actually kind of surprised they didn't put a d ring or something to hook up to for towing. i know cops get stuck around here pretty often. when i worked for a ford dealership, the fords had a small "t" shapped opening on the front on one side and 1 on the back on 1 side specifically for towing. but that was a long time ago. :chillin:

i don't throw tools, i throw everything else! :dunce: when i was done parting out the suburban i did last summer, i used the body that was left to take out my frustrations. every hit with the hammer was for a stuck bolt, broken tool, or cut/bruise i suffered. man it felt good! :D i even gave my kids hammers and let them bang away at it. they had a great time. how many kids get the chance to destroy a truck? :clapping:

nope, no pic's. i didn't think he would like it if i got out and started snapping pic's of him. would've been different if he could have gotten out of the car, but i don't think he wanted to be in any pic's. :D as far as legallity, it is illegal unless you have warning lights and a permit/liscense. we got out to help a little old lady out of the ditch once. there was already a cop on the scene when we pulled up. he was sitting in the comfort of his warm car while the little old lady was stuck in the ditch with a dress on. when we pulled over to see if we could pull her out (it would've been a quick and easy pull) the cop got out and told us he would ticket us if we didn't get back in and leave. that was an nd trooper. :huh???:

minnesota state trooper. he was buried bigtime. he was in so deep he literally couldn't get out of his car. i asked if he needed help and he said he had a tow coming. i offered to get him out and he was thrilled. of course i did it for the safety of the citizens of minnesota. what would have happened if there was an emergency? hmmmmmmmm.......i had to do it, you know, for the good of the people. : 8) ok, i just wanted to help out. besides, how many people can say they've tugged out a cop car? so i now know where to put a tow strap on a cop car. for the record, the push bar on the front bumper will pull right off. no i didn't do it, he just advised me when i got the rope out (yelling out his window). i hooked on and tugged him out. man he was in there. when i got it clear i got out and started to unhook the strap. that's when he informed me he's a neighbor and sees me all the time. i knew one lived by me (actually 2 and a total of 4 city cops and 4 fireman) but had never met him. well he knew me. we chatted a while and both took off. i felt great to have helped him out, but was really glad when i found out he was a neighbor. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: so that's 18 tows this year so far. this year has included a 15 passenger church van full of people dressed in their sunday best, a plow (pick up with a plow), a tractor, a usps mail van, and now a highway patrol vehicle. hmmmm.... interesting year so far. :rotf: :rotf:
