  1. The motor is pretty compact. I have thoughts of doing the same thing. You know it has a electric throttle? I have a 2500 quad cab 4x4 and the motor pulls it around pretty good. It would be a beast in a mj. I've seen people put them in tjs so I would think with enough fabbing you could put 1 in a mj. You plan on getting a wrecked donor vehicle? Here is a pic of 1 going in a jk. http://nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27677
  2. It looks like about 32" from top of air cleaner to bottom of oil pan. What you got in mind? :brows:
  3. I have been working on this truck for 2 1/2 years. It started out with a 2.5 3 speed automatic 4x4. Now it has a 4.0l aw4 and 5.5" RE lift (mostly) and 33's
  4. Yes, mine was built in oct 1986
  5. I did this conversion and had to do nothing to the firewall. Had to completely replace the header panel and radiator support, trim the area behind the headlights and replace the hood. Had to move the cross member back and shorten the drive shaft. You must have a complete parts vehicle to do this. I used a 94 xj. Not to complicated just time consuming. Motor mounts just bolt in in place of the 2.5l ones. You cannot use you exist tranny go for an aw4 if auto or ax15 if a manual. If you have any more questions just ask.
  6. You could use a drive shaft from a comanche with a d35. Mine was out like that when I SOA it but when I installed the dana 44 It gave me an extra inch. Or get a drive shaft from a long bed or 2wd drive and have it shortened. I got mine shortened when I installed the 4.0l for $25.00.
  7. I got mine from napa. They had them in stock. They even pressed them on for me.
  8. That is how I did mine. When I Connected the engine harness to the 86 2.5 bulkhead I couldnt get it to work. The pinout was different. I just removed the fuse panel and the interior harness from the 94 xj installed it in the mj and it fire up.
  9. I think I should just add to the outer pinion shims. The inner is just for pinion depth am I correct?
  10. I'm working on installing 4.56 gears in the d44. I'm wondering about pinion preload how do I know if I need to shim the inner or outer pinion shims. Measured original shims then I Installed the same thickness with the new shims way too preload. Should I add to both stacks every time or just 1 at a time? Any help would be appreciated.
  11. You can use a vin decoder and know for sure. Thats how I found out mine was a X model.
  12. I found this post while getting ready to install 4.56 s in my d44. This is the best step by step instructions i've seen. http://www.pirate4x4.com/articles/tech/ ... Gear_Setup
  13. By the way I think all the nuts and bolts are metric. At least my mj is the only standard bolts are the after market parts that I've installed. Guys correct me if I'm wrong.
  14. I have a 94 xj 4.0l in my MJ. I just cranked it after setting in my garage most of the winter. It has a bad oil leak that looks to be coming from the Piece that the oil filter screws into. It has a big torxs screw on the end of it is there a gasket that I can replace or maybe it needs tightening? I don't have a torxs big enough to fit it so I didnt try that yet. Anybody have this leak before if so what was the fix. Thanks
  15. These are the springs I got. They say 5.5 on xj and 4" on a zj.http://www.rubiconexpress.com/Products.aspx?Cn=326&Pn=1710&XnPath=320,322,326&Vid=746F441122900
  16. this is what I got. http://www.nates4x4.com/catalog/product ... ucts_id=39
  17. I used the fusepanel and wiring from inside the donor vehicle. I tried to do like you did but I had the same problem. Replace the interior harness and I bet it will crank. Also some of the connections inside will be a little different but if you still have the donor you should be able to figure it out. It is not to hard, label all your connectors and you should be fine.
  18. I think 79 would be a passenger side drop axle? Be sure its driver side drop unless you are changing transfer cases too.
  19. I just got mine finished on 1 side I went from red to charcoal and it turned out much better than I expected. I used interior paint from Advance. The charcoal grey is almost a perfect match to the jeep interior color.
  20. How did you find out when your 1986 was built? I would like to find out when my 1986 was built. It has a sticker in the drivers door.
  21. No, no modifications to firewall other than drilling holes for the trans linkage and the trans controller wiring becouse I wanted it mounted inside. My 86 was built in oct 85 so I don't know when the firewall was changed but mine fit just fine.
  22. My conversion was from 2.5 to 4.0 but the only difference should be, you will need a new fuel tank I think unless the fuel sending unit will fit in your tank. I t has been a while since I did mine but I will try to help.I used a 94 xj sport with aw4 and np231. My original tranny was a column shift and the aw4 was floor shift. All I had to do for that was remove the plate covering the hole and the floor shifter bolted right in. I had to drill a hole with a hole saw for the trans linkage. I used the radiator support ,hood, radiator, condensor steering column,heat/ac unit, complete wiring harness and fuse panel from the xj. I did have to modify the stop lamp switch to use my brake pedal the hole on the mj was to big for the xj stop lamp switch it might be easier to use the xj brake pedal assembly but I had already hauled the xj off when I got to this part. The trans cross member had to be moved back about 5 inches and the rear drive shaft shortened. The motor mounts just bolted right in. I had to drill new hole s to attach most ever thing like the ecm and radiator over flow bottle and relay box. I removed the engine trans and tc as 1 unit and unhooked as little as possible and labeled anything I had to unhook. Hope this helps you get started. If you have any question let me know. It isnt that hard just time consuming and it is well worth it.
  23. here is an old pic with 4.5 lift and 31s
  24. The problem with the header panel was the hood latch positions on my86 it had 1 latch in the center instead of 2 on either side if you have the newer hood you should not have to mod the header panel I also had to switch the radiator support you may want to check if that is the same as your xj as well. When I did the upgrade I replaced the complete wiring harness and dash and even the steering column. alot of connections was different and it made it easier. There was a thread about installing the newer style dash you might want to check it out.
  25. My 86 was built in oct 85 and I replaced the 2.5 with a 94 4.0 there was no issues with the firewall only the header panel and hood. Your trucks definetly not an 86 since it is a short bed. I think your engine bay should be the same as any 87 or newer mj. If you have any questions on the conversion let me know. Its interesting though that it has the 86 emblems and the 10 slot grill.
