Misfire and hesitation, 2.5L experts welcome!
mjeff87 replied to Shandley's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
disconnect the O2 sensor and run it, see if the problems go away. I chased a random stumble/misfire on my 2.5 for several weeks, couldn't figure it out. Then one time when it was acting up I started disconnecting things one by one to see what happened. When I unplugged the O2 it cleared right up. Ran with it disconnected for a few months and then one day I decided to plug it back in. Ran perfect from that point forward..... Jeff -
just to clarify.....you are getting cranking but no run? or is the starter not even engaging?
-
this is a 2.5 -> 4.0 swap, right? using the cab harness you got from Pat? What engine harness are you using (manual or auto)? if it's an auto harness, you have to jump the NSS (jumper wire between pins A and E, or splice the two wires together). Are all of the grounds hooked up under the hood, especially the ones behind the dipstick and the one @ the back of the head to firewall? Jeff

I imagine it has something to do with the TCU in the auto harness and the extra TPS output.....I'm actually running the entire auto engine bay harness (swapped it in when I converted to a 4.0L). I have the extra TPS output hooked up, but it does nothing......and I jumped the NSS wiring as well. Jeff

I'm running an 89 auto ECU in my 87 with an AX15.....no problems here. Jeff

Are ZJ pitman arms longer than XJ/MJ??
mjeff87 replied to XJs4Ever's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You got them out there in CO??? I thought they were only a "southern" thing...... I love 'em.....the only way I can get my wife to go in one is if I pay. My mother will NOT step foot in one, though. Jeff -
ta da....the old 2.5L, in all it's glory.... Image Not Found

just got done putting it all back together.......wow, what a difference. Turns out I had an intake manifold leak too at #'s 3 and 4. Fixed all that with a new gasket, did an oil change, coolant change (obviously), new plugs, serpentine belt, cleaned the TB, and went and filled it up with gas. The thing is actually kinda fun to drive once again ;) Jeff

Anyone else turning wrenches today? :D Pulled the head on the TJ after dinner....gonna run it up to the shop at 0800 tomorrow and get the rear (snapped) stud drilled out. Should have it back on the road by early afternoon. Jeff Image Not Found head off (what a PITA.....) Image Not Found snapped off stud that costs $1.50, but is gonna cost $100 in gaskets, head bolts, and machine shop work :headpop: Image Not Found

yours may not have had the switch/bezel plate on the dash, but the dash wiring is there.....it may be tucked/rolled up behind the steering column, but it's there.... Jeff

exhaust manifold stud measurement
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yeah, I'm gonna replace both of them while I'm in there. For search purposes, the studs are 3/16-16_3/16-24 X 1 3/4" Picked up 2 new ones today at NAPA. Then drove 30 minutes to get the only head bolt set I could find in stock anywhere :fs1: Had to buy a deep well 1/2" drive, 12 point 1/2" socket and drill out the inside so it will slip over the tops of the 4 long head bolts. I haven't even started the job yet and am already tired... Jeff -
XJ dash harness to rear MJ harness wiring guides.
mjeff87 replied to mfpdm's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
outstanding writeup Paul......like everything you do, it's top notch  FWIW, I went down to the junkyard today (haven't been there in about 6 weeks). If anyone's interested, there's a very nice '88 4.0/5 spd Renix there......both the engine and interior harnesses are intact and in very good shape. Jeff -
yes, if you have a large enough hoist (and a load balancer helps, too) pull the whole driveline as one unit. The 4.0 is a bit heavier than ^^^ 2.5 setup, and it is alot more heavier in the rear, but it's doable. Here's the driveline going into my MJ, which I could have attached the chains a bit better on, but it slid right in (with one person underneath guiding the rear of the transfer case): Image Not Found The biggest hangup is guiding the oil filter past the frame horn on the passenger side while clearing the bellhousing at the top of the tranny tunnel. You may want to remove the MAP sensor from the firewall to avoid crushing it (right Pat?). Also, either drain the TC or else cap the end with a plastic bottle or an old yoke so you don't loose all the fluid out of it. Jeff edit: you could pull the TC off first, it's only 6 bolts.....that would help balance the rest of the driveline a bit better (but then drain the tranny or else plug up the output with rags or something or you'll have gear oil all over yourself and everything else. yummy.

This is for the 2.5 on my TJ, but they're all the same anyway..... :D anyone know offhand the size/pitch (at least for the side that screws into the head) and length of the exhaust manifold studs on a 2.5/4.0? I need to fix the rear one on my TJ next week to get a safety sticker on it, and need to pick up a replacement. TIA, Jeff

904/909's are 23 spline..... found that out the hard way converting my buddy's YJ from auto (909) to stick (AX5) go figure  Jeff

? for those that have swapped wire harnesses
mjeff87 replied to 87mjdriver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I swapped an 89 (4.0) engine side harness that didn't have the C101 into my 87 (2.5) that had the C101......it plugs up 100% Jeff -
and on this fine Veteran's Day eve, I wish you all in the Corps a happy belated birthday and a good day tomorrow (and every day) thank you for your service :USAflag: Semper Fi Jeff (USAR, E-5)

when Pat and I SOA'd my D44, we just set the new perches parallel to the stock SUA ones and burned them in (to retain the original pinion angle, just as mvusee explained). I know you can't do that, since your axle came from an XJ, but IIRC the pinion angle was something like 7 degrees or so. I'll grab my angle finder and toss it on the axle in the morning and snap a pic for ya.....that should at least give you something to start with. Mine's sitting at ride height on 35's, and I don't have a single driveline vibe to speak of (axle wrap is another story, however.....) Jeff
-
that 42" is correct, and it's from the center of the pin hole to center of the pin hole (not from either end of the perch). HTH, Jeff
