If you have access to a later model underhood wiring harness (updated to eliminate the C101) you can swap harnesses. Here is the 89 MJ (automatic) harness I swapped into mine when I converted it to 4.0: Image Not Found Jeff

Ive got EVIC, not OTIS....I think. I don't have a menu button, only a step button tho. Can't figger out how to get the remote opener buttons to work with my garage door opener either. Edit...just looked again at it, and the buttons are not labeled....must be OTIS then :(
-
Yeah, I read that link......it says you can do it with the EVIC, but how? Owners manual doesn't say, either. I R confused. I have rear drums, sadly. That was the first thing I looked at, ironically....I was so hoping for discs. edit: it seems my EVIC doesn't have the menu option to disable the rolling door lock. More Jeep EVIC info than you ever wanted to know can be found at http://www.lhforums.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-742.html

Pat (or anyone else), is there anyway to disable the auto-door locks @ 15 mph? Quite annoying..... Interweb search led me to a couple of key cycle combinations/pressing the driverside door lock button, but they didn't work. Can I do that through the EVIC?

From my (limited) research on KJ's before buying, the '02's were lowered somewhat from all the other model years....something about rollovers and NHTSA rating. My wife's Forrester has more wheelwell clearance than this thing LOL. Plus it sits a bit low for me, I'm used to stepping DOWN to get out of the seat, not flush with the road. I'm gonna have to do something to get it a tad bit higher, eventually.

Good to know Pat, thanks. I have to admit, it rides a helluva lot better than the TJ, stock. It's got nearly brand new Michelin "Cross-terrains" (WTF that means....) on it now, I'll probably ride them thru the summer then look at putting some AT's on it come winter. Doesn't appear to be too much room left in the wheelwells without a lift to do anything much larger than stock. I might even throw another set of Treadwright 'caps on it. Had both a set of AT and MT's on the TJ, both ran very well.
-
LOL.....yeah, it's a bit "different". It's an auto as well, my left foot doesn't know what to do with itself now. This morning I went to shift it into D and I pushed the imaginary clutch pedal when my hand got on the shifter. Weird. Already thinking of a SAS and 2-3" lift :brows:

Please Lord, forgive me for turning to the dark side of IFS :rotf: Finally came across a KJ that was priced right and had good mileage, and bought it. It didn't really help that as I was driving to look at it, the poor little 2.5L in my TJ decided to crap the bed (sounds like a piston skirt broke off or something else equally as scary). Drove it into the dealer lot sounding like a pack of monkeys banging on a garbage can with a pipe wrench and they still gave me what I wanted in trade for it. 6 hours later, I was driving this home: 2002 KJ Limited (loaded with everything but a sunroof), 58K miles, and not a scratch on it. Image Not Found MJ will be for sale soon too, look for my post in the classifieds  Jeff

Crap.....the wife and I are going to be in Philly Easter week, coming back home on the 29th.

Assuming leaving from the Quantico area? Probably heading due west, but if you are swinging down south a bit thru Richmond let me know. I'll buy you a beer  Jeff

Yes, they are. You will also need the shift linkage parts from the AX15 donor.....the part that attaches to the tranny tunnel, the bracket that attaches to the tranny, and the rod that attaches to the mode lever on the TC. All of these are specific to the AX15. Jeff

New Lifters, Replace Cam Or Not?
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No manifold leak, it's a brand new unit (old one was VERY cracked). I did snug up the manifold bolts, too. The tapping seems to be getting more consistent now. I'm pulling the VC and plugs tomorrow morning, going to check each rocker/pushrod/lifter to see if I can find any slop anywhere. -
New Lifters, Replace Cam Or Not?
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks all. Maybe I'll pull the valve cover this weekend and take a look at the top end stuff. I've had the head on this engine off twice now, once to repair the rear exhaust stud and most recently due to a head gasket leak/replacement. Maybe it's possible one of the rocker studs loosened up (had that happen on the 2.5 that used to be in my MJ, the rocker actually slipped off the pushrod). I'm just curious why the sound only happens under cold load (not at idle) and goes away after a couple minutes of driving. Jeff -
2.5 in my TJ has recently developed a pronounced ticking/clacking sound on cold startup, under engine load. After about 2-3 minutes of driving it goes away, so I'm thinking it's a bad lifter (as opposed to a rod bearing). Frequency is consistent with upper end rotation as well. If I pulled the lifters and could identify a bad one(s), would it be advisable to replace just the bad one or replace them all? And if replacement is warranted, is a camshaft change absolutely necessary? I've read conflicting info on the interwebs ranging from "new lifters on old cam" is ok (but not visa-versa) to "OMG you'll trash the cam in 10 seconds flat". Engine has @ 186K on it, and otherwise runs like a top. 40 psi oil pressure at hot idle, 50-ish while driving. WWCCD? (What would Comanche Club do) TIA, Jeff

It'll fit, but it's pretty tight. I swapped a 4.0 into mine (was a 2.5) and wanted to keep the open system along with the overflow. There is a pinch seam in the wheelwell that you have to modify a bit to get the harness to sit flush. I didn't install any of the EGR stuff on the fender there, and I just spliced the wiring at the ballast resistor to remove it. Here's a prettty crappy pic, but you get the idea. I did have to fiddle with it for awhile, but trust me, it fits. I do have slight interference with the radiator filler neck and the front spring clip on the airbox, but there's enough play in the airbox to gently push it enough to pop the clip. Creeping Idle After New Tps Install
mjeff87 replied to snakedoc67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
X2 on this ^^^^ Jeff -
I DD an 01 TJ. It's only a 2.5, but is a 5 speed. That's a $5-6K vehicle in my neck of the woods. Wranglers do hold their resale value, but it does eventually fade with mileage. I've got almost 200K on mine, and it is spotless, new softtop with tinted windows, aftermarket bumpers on both ends, 31" MT's on alloy wheels, and it's so clean you can eat off the inside and the engine (I'm really anal about my vehicles, especially the underhood bits). Thought about trading it a couple months ago, and found only ONE TJ I was willing to look at in a dealer lot. It had the same specs as yours here, in about the same condition....only had an OEM softtop that was literally falling off the frame. Bottom line price I could get was $9k, and they wouldn't give me a penny over $3500 for mine. Needless to say, I'm still driving mine. Jeff

A Copy Of The Parking Brake Recall?
mjeff87 replied to XJs4Ever's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Holy crap.....it's Rick. How ya doin man? Hope all is well with you and yours. Jeff -
That's what I'm running in mine (AX-15 with about 5-6" of lift). No problems here. Jeff
-
I'm in the same boat as you.....looking for an XJ and either finding all clapped out ones with 200K+ miles on them, or nice low-mileage ones that are SERIOUSLY overpriced. I'll admit, I've seen a few KJ's that caught my eye. :help: Jeff

How Hard Its It To Replace A Timing Chain?
mjeff87 replied to gogmorgo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's a little writeup I did when I swapped mine (way back in 2007). That engine is still running now with over 230K on it, in a different MJ. Guess I did it correctly lol. Jeff http://comancheclub.com/topic/3094-how-to-timing-chain-replacement/?hl=timing+chain -
Fuel Sending Unit Humming
mjeff87 replied to dancome433's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's a crapshoot, but your pump is beginning to die. Mine hummed for a year or so moderately, then it got LOUD. I kept driving it, knowing it was gonna go and one day out of the blue it did. Loaded it up with crap and drove it down to my storage facilty, parked it and unloaded it and it didn't start. I'd change it sooner than later, especially if it starts getting louder than it already is. Jeff -
I'm running the stock mounts on top of the packs. It works, but like Pete says it really isn't ideal. Plus, I also believe they are contributing to some axle wrap. I'll be soon moving them back down to the axletubes with a set of RE mounts. Jeff
