Just don't use that expanding-foam type stuff (a.k.a. Great Stuff). It tends to attract ants fairly well.

Honestly, the only "new" parts on it are the rear struts/springs. Almost everything else that I replaced on it came from the junkyard, right down to the muffler :D The tranny has issues, as well as the #4 cylinder. I do, however, have a brand new set of wheels/tires stashed under the house I was waiting to swap on when the inspection was due for renewal (next month). I'll be able to use them now. I'm going to look at it tomorrow. Buddy says it has a small exhaust leak and the only thing it needs is a donut for the exhaust where the cat meets the pipe (although there isn't a donut there  ). Ain't nothing I can't pull out of the 'yard to fix, or I could just swap whole exhausts between the two. I'll be able to fix the loose heat sheild on the cat while I'm at it (aggrivating as @#%$ listening to that, but it's too hard to get to unless you pull the whole thing off) That and I'm gonna change the timing belt. It's got 130K on it, and he doesn't know if it's ever been changed or not  Jeff

Pretext: see "blown engine, not my MJ" post below Got a good deal from a freind to replace my 1994 Teal green, 1.9L, AOD Ford Escort with............... ........a 1994 Teal green, 1.9L, AOD Ford Escort :D Yup, same make, model, year, driveline, and color  The only difference is it's a 4 door with trunk, while mine is a 2 dr hatchback. BUT, the rear seat backs still fold down, and the lower seat is removeable so I can use it to haul crap in Now I can start saving all that money I was spending in gas for upcoming work on the MJ! Not sure what I'm gonna do with Escort #1 yet.....I don't have room to store it and can't leave it sitting with no plates on it. Ideally I'd like to keep it for parts, or else to fix and resell. I could donate it to the Kidney Foundation, who in turn would sell it to the junkyard...then I could go down there and pull off parts of my own vehicle and have to pay for them  Jeff

My MJ sat in a barn on my family's farm in PA for about 1 1/2 years while I worked on it (drove up from VA on weekends). A commune of field mice set up shop inside the HVAC system....they used the OEM floor padding to make their nests inside the dash. I had no idea they were doing that until the day I finished the project and drove it out for a test drive. I turned on the defroster (on high, nonetheless  ) and got hit with a blizzard of nesting material. Almost two years later and little pieces of matting STILL come out of the vents from time to time  Bastids...... Jeff

I'm-a-still lookin' for ya down here, Eagle. There just hasn't been a single @$(%# longbed in the 'yard lately! Jeff

X2 on the spare can. I carry 5 gallons with me if I'm doing other than around-town driving....you never know what's gonna happen :D The old 5 ton wrecker I drove in the service (M543) had dual saddle tanks, but only one of them fed the engine. The other one held spare fuel and had a transfer pump on it that pumped fuel over to the main tank. The fuel gauge had dual pickups on it, and you could switch it to read either tank......when you saw the main getting low, you had to engage the transfer pump. Not an ideal setup, but it would avoid you having to run a seperate filter and supply line to the engine. Just plumb it to dump into the main tank and use the already supplied factory hardware like normal :D The only thing you'd have to wire in would be the transfer pump. Jeff

Caught a bit of this on a public access channel last night while flipping thru the channels. It's a new concept in rotary engines that employs diesel engine theory. It's called the Rand Cam, and it has no plugs, and it produces 1 hp per .75 lbs of engine weight (compared to conventional piston engines that are about 1 hp per 5 to 6 lbs of engine weight). The thing only has two moving part assemblies! A 6" by 6" prototype version, weighing only 40 lbs, produced 42 hp It's basically the equivalent of a 24 cylinder diesel, 20:1 compression  Anyways, if it piques anyone's interest, here is the website: http://www.regtech.com/directcharge.html Also click the "Rand Cam Technology" link on the page and go to "prototype engine" to see the actual thing. Enjoy! Jeff

Time to airbag it, vato! Jeff

If the fates smile on me (which they haven't been lately  ), I'm planning on swapping a 242 in behind my AX5 this summer..... There's a couple of guys on NAXJA who run/ran one behind a -15, with no issues. Jeff

Yup, sure can. Plus you get the added bonus of building it the way you want to, not the way it came off the line.... Jeff

One jerry can of MOGAS per saddle tank of diesel peps them up a bit. Gotta love multi-fuel engines Jeff

new to manual trannys question
mjeff87 replied to Oizarod115's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Generally, I don't use the clutch when shifting out of gear during normal driving (and sometimes not shifting into gear either). When you get to the shift point, like Eagle says, feather off the throttle a bit and ease it out of gear....but don't try it under load. Then you're basically using the shift fork to pry the gears apart, and you get that "clunk" sound that you experienced. Same procedure almost for when you're coasting to a stop on decel....a quick blip of the throttle while you shift to N.....like buttah ;) I like to think to myself as extending the life of the dreaded internal throwout bearing by not using it as much :D Also, don't be like so many people out there who sit for extended periods with the clutch in while in gear, like at a stoplight. Put the darn thing in neutral. My brother drives his stick like that, and it kills me to ride with him sometimes! Jeff -

Apparently I need some sort of exhaust system.

Forgot my @#&% camera this morning, had to use the one here at work. Here ya go: Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found -
I should have that micro-camera sometime this week, so I can see what the damage looks like. The more I'm tinkering with it, the more I think it's a burned exhaust valve rather than a hole in the piston. I'll find out soon enough. Jeff

Groovy idea.....don't forget the flapper on the top of the stack I wouldn't rigid-mount it, tho....I'd fab a small plate to bolt to the cab, then bolt the pipe to it incorporating some isolators. Seems like a chore to me, though. Check out Pat's rig....he runs a cherry bomb straight off the cat and a turndown tip right @ the rear of the cab. Simple, quick, cheep (my three favorite things!) I got Pat's old/my new bumper wire-wheeled down, ends cleaned up with an angle grinder, and painted last night after work :D Only two more days to go with the Jed Clampett special..... Jeff -
I can do pics, or I can send you my OEM ones once I get them unbolted and ground off. Or if you don't need them, I can trace them out on a sheet of paper and mail you a template. Jeff

This is the object of your desire. It scissors open, and the end that goes into the cable un-winder is spoon shaped: Image Not Found

how to bootyfab a rear bumper
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No, Pat cut the sliders off already (that was painful to watch  ) I'm reattaching those down the road sometime. Pat, the bumper does fit, I'm just cramped for time right now with the 'scort blown up. The factory bumper brackets on mine are welded in as well as bolted....I just have to grind the weld off to get them off and then yours is getting bolted up. Gotta work Saturday, so maybe Sunday hopefully I can get to it. That thing's a summbitch to try to hold up by yourself! Jeff -

I really didn't want to put this in Tech  It was more of a lighthearted post than an actual "how-to" LOL.....
