I've spent more replacing the transmission on a $30,000 VW than at 5 year old subaru would cost. Will never won a modern VW again. If the engine is in the rear its ok. On the other hand my subarus kicked @$$, cheaper parts than VW/MB. Has he considered the Grand Cherokee Diesel? Same engine as the mercedes, super quiet, clean, great torque, great mileage. Leftover 08's with 4wd have been selling in the 25-30k range with all the options.......some thing to consider.

You could do it in software too. Have it read the value and average it over a period of a few seconds and then switch to that average output. If enough people have problems with these guage conversions I could make up a few sets at once for other people as well. I have some 40 pin pics here but those are kinda expensive and seem wasteful since we don't need that many.

The fuel gauge is an analog input polarity sensitive gauge from a sliding pot, up to the input buss change. What you are proposing is a digital resistive stepping box, correct? Basically yup. Just use the POT command in picbasic, and with about 10 more lines of code you have a converter. A 16f88 would be perfect(and I have some here) use two pins for the POT command, leaving the other 14 pins for the resistance steps for your particular gauge. Plus I am going to be using some PICS for some other functions as well, like generating the correct resistances for the cruise control and radio remote controls.

Also, I don't know if anyone has considered this, but it would be fairly simple to build a converter pic with a 8 or 16 pin pic, and then have it open up a different circuit with the correct resistance. In this method you could specify which resistance on the sender means what level on the fuel guage, you could make your gauge completely linear, or make it more like the factory gauge. This is what I am planning on doing for my swap. Solves this whole problem entirely.

Note of caution is that the TJ clusters switched to the PCI bus after 2001, so you need a 2000 down cluster to work with XJ wiring.

I certainly do agree they are tough. And even tougher with a good tranny cooler installed. :D But they do have a lot of power loss, almost 30% in my case on the Hesco dyno, which according to them is normal. If it ever breaks, which I suspect won't be anytime soon, I'll be working with the Novak bros to adapt a 5-speed auto in, preferably the Aisin A650E or A750E. 545RFE or 68RFE could be good too.

ya i've seen that before. Cheap price. I just wonder how the rubber compounds compare to the original name brands. How do they compare for stickyness, wear, etc...... I did see the thing about walnut shell increasing traction, might be willing to give that a try.

I know alot of people swear by redline. Not sure exactly how it works, the only way I can think it would help is if it change the viscosity(the surface tension of the water)

Once on a volvo I was able to replace a stem without un-beading the rim. I don't know how exactly I was able to do that, and it defies all logic.
