Little? I'd hate to see a big'n.

This will be a brief review of TruckLite 27450C and the knock-offs you can find on Amazon, eBay and elsewhere. Included in this write-up are the aforementioned TruckLites, Eagle Lights and CREE LED headlight of similar design. I may edit the content with links in the future, but this is the "non-electrical N-guy-neer" (read: average consumer) version of the comparison. If you've looked into these, you know the price point of the TruckLite is well over $300 for a pair, $199 for the Eagle Lights and about $100 for the CREE lights. I found a pair of used Eagle Lights on Craigslist, which in and of themselves were a significant upgrade to any of the sealed beams available. In the past I always ran Sylvania SIlverStar Ultras and the Eagle Light range and overall performance was a noted improvement for my tired night eyes. Apologies for the lack of photographic comparison. The next two pics are Eagle Lights high and low ... For comparison to the Eagle Lights I'm running, I purchased and installed TruckLite 27450C and the CREE 5X7 LED equivalent for comparison. Hate to disappoint you guys who dropped the coin for the TruckLites, but the knockoffs perform equally well. The color, range and appearance are almost identical. The only obvious difference is the components. TruckLite board ... Eagle Light/CREE "board" ... Eagle Light and CREE are essentially identical assemblies (at least in visual examination). TruckLites have heavier gauge wiring, with thicker insulation and the connector quality is better. When I disconnected the Eagle Lights to do the comparison, one of the blades fell out of the connector housing. It did snap back in place, but you would have to use a lot of force to push a blade out of the TruckLite's connector housing. I've run the Eagle Lights since October 2017 and have been pleased with their performance. I paid what CREE lights cost new plus $15 for postage and would have been better off buying CREE with free shipping off Amazon. I don't know what the longevity will be, but I have some back-ups. TruckLite does offer a 3 year limited warranty. Meanwhile, you might find a deal on TruckLites (I paid $240 shipped), but I would suggest buying the CREE lights and putting the $200+ back in your pocket.

He was very active when I first found CC.com ... It was evident to me from the start he was a major contributor who shared his knowledge of our trucks freely. He certainly had a bunch of'em. I recognized his absence and wondered what had become of him. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I loved my 99 XJ and would be driving it today if some bonehead hadn't wrecked it on me. Never had a lick of trouble.

Yep, looks great! Where did you get the tailgate lettering? I need to get some and don't want to get junk that will peel off. -

Thanks for the compliments ... much appreciated. I'm really happy with the outcome. It was a package deal. I found an ad on Craigslist that sounded good. He did some work on my XJ ... I discovered some rust/rot when cleaning it up. He replaced a floor pan, some rot behind a rear wheel under a bumper end and repair/repaint of a full length key job on the drivers side. That and the prep and paint for the MJ was $2700 all in. Considering some other quotes I had taken, I was pretty good with that. He had some trouble with the paint "wrinkling" with his first effort. I sent him a text with your question and this is his reply; ""Remove and/or feather out as much paint as possible. Three light coats of SEM high build primer and sand with red scuff pad between coats. Spray with SEM trim black. Final color is satin black, single stage enamel." When we talked about it, he said that would enable me to get any wax off the flares if I was sloppy when waxing. I think that's just the light and the body line. No stripe, but now you have me thinking! As an aside (Don), I put 96 Chrome head light doors and full grille on her. Needed a little tweeking because the configuration is a little different than '88, but it fits! -

Holy crap. Yeah, I could probably manage that. As to the links ... when it comes to dropping transmission pans unsupervised I'd likely do more harm than good.
-
Thanks guys. The repair is beyond me, but I'm going to point to this for my shop. Thus far they haven't fixed it.

Got her back, but haven't had time to upload pics until tonight ... Of course, ya spend some $ on frivolous and get poked. She came out great, but now I'm having some transmission issues. I'll get it sorted. Meanwhile ... -
First question ... what transmission came in my '88? 4.0 Pioneer 4X4 auto column shifter w/OD. Pretty sure it's the original. Second (multi-part) question … Could a ground or electrical problem cause it to; search between OD and 3 at ~45MPH? Could the same problem cause it to "find neutral" after rolling to a stop, or coasting for a period before accelerating? The "searching thing" has become chronic. Finding neutral is not as frequent, but decidedly inconvenient. If I slow to 5PMH and downshift to low and then manually upshift I can proceed. I was driving in a downpour recently and it did the neutral thing. Wondering if the water made it worse.

Have to echo MASH was one of the best TV series' ever. Another credit was each replacement character was as good, or better than the predecessor. Not many surviving cast members. The lastest passing was David Ogden Stiers who died of bladder cancer.

My parents had the Pontiac equivalent to the Nomad … I think it was called the Safari? Camomile and Nimbus Grey (Pink and White). They shipped it to Italy when the USAF transferred my Dad to Naples and sold it to someone stationed there before returning to the states. I'm sure it would be worth a small fortune now. Upon return, my folks bought a Pontiac Catalina Wagon with a 389 or 396 … just a big-a$$ motor in a huge wagon. Yellow on black. Reverse Bat Mobile (sort of).

I can't speak to the dimmer function for dash lights because that's a different set, but the overhead lights are on or off, as are the lights on the visor vanity mirrors. I would agree that the dimmer is necessary and more desirable. I neglected to mention I also installed the same vendors LED license plate, brake and reverse lights in my XJ, all of which perform significantly better than stock. I have 5% tint on all rear glass and the LED reverse lights are low hung flood lamps. They make a BIG difference.

Spent some time (and $) doing some ~upgrades and comparisons for LED interior and headlights. I'll review the latter in my next post to this thread. Quick review of One Way Light (which has moved their inventory to Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/One-Way-Light/pages/15105086011 ) ... They don't have much for the MJ (yet) but a testimonial for their interior cab lights for my MJ is 5 stars. See Goose's pic for comparison. Absolutely floods the interior with light. They're pricey but IMO worth the $ and backed by the vendor. I exchanged several emails with Jason (the One Way Light guy) who told me that "demand" would drive production for MJ upgrades. Currently nothing for reverse, brake, directional, plate or taillight upgrades. I also bought the interior lighting "package" for my XJ w/overhead console, which includes interior lights for 1998-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ and 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee ZJ (Interior LED Light Set Overhead Console Model 1WL-XJ4). I would suggest being selective and cherry picking from what they offer on Amazon. With regard to the XJ, less than half of 1WL-XJ4 is usable in the XJ. I should note that the replacement vanity mirror LEDs only emphasize you're ugly. The dimmer function is defeated and OH LORD can you see your face! The overhead and floor courtesy lights are amazing and an excellent upgrade. Support these guys, they're active military. The 1% who protects you.

In addition to fewer natural disasters than other US states, another nice thing about NH … few to no bugs or animals that will kill you.

Woohooo it's on sale! $213.74. Discovered a cool thing ... err ... person. 72 year old retired industrial arts teacher turned body man. Bill listed on CL as "quality work, best supplies, lifetime* guarantee*". I had to ask about the asterisks, so I called and told him what I had and if he would take a look. His explanation was his work would outlive him and if not, he'd fix it or pay to have it fixed (act of God or MVA excluded). I should mention, he's in very good health! The back story is; 35 years ago he started doing body work for a dealership on the side, because his teacher's salary wouldn't pay for family, house, education ... etc. He discovered he had the knack and made a lot more $ doing autobody (sad fact). Now he does the work in his garage when it's convenient for him, or to pay his mooring charges for his fishing boat. Stroke of luck, he needed cash. Testing the waters, I brought my XJ to him. It was keyed the length of the driver's side while the previous owner left it at a park-n-ride outside DC. The previous pic is a testament to his work. Looks new! My Comanche is in his garage as I write this. Can't wait! -

Thanks ... Yeah, I had mixed emotions about selling the other truck, but I'm a shade tree mechanic at best and can't do body work to save my life. It just didn't make sense to spend any more on it. I posed the new truck for pics and the launching point for updates. -

Like the last one, I found it on Craigslist. This one was in Tryon, NC. At first the seller was reluctant to do a long distance transaction, but things worked out. 88 Pioneer, short wheel base, 4x4, 4.0, auto, with working and updated A/C. I'm actually partial to the long box, but this thing is absolutely rust free and had the essentials. On the trailer, ready to head north ...
