  1. Unless you've got a lift and a strong partner, drain the tank before trying to strap it back up. And the frame rail side ends of straps (without the bolt things) go into the side of the frame, not the round hole in bottom of the bed supports, no matter how nicely they hang in there.
  2. The rules leave much to the individual teams, but our car has a Honda f4i motorcycle engine, 600cc, and uses the stock transmission, chain driving a torsen diff (center diff from an A4 quattro). I think the rear axle halves were oem from a Yammy Grizzly, but they've been chopped and extended for our wheelbase. I'm in actually in our shop, er... corner of the tractor lab, right now (quiet place to study when no work's happening), with the cars not 30 feet away, and would take a few pictures, except I don't have a camera on me... This year, we've got some newer Honda 600cc engines, RR blocks, IIRC, and we've got custom made axle shafts which hopefully won't twist apart as much as the re-re-welded ones we've been using. The car running around in the the video is S8, last year's car, and the one in the background of a few shots is the death-proof S1, the first car the team built, back in 97. S8 weighs around 480lbs, and puts down around 70 hp breathing through our required 20mm restrictor. 0-60mph is somewhere around 4 seconds, but with the 4:1 rear end ratio, there's not much more after that. Theoretical top speed is somewhere around 100mph, but we've never verified it. The car's really intended more for acceleration and maneuverability around seriously tight autocross courses than flat-out speed. http://www.facebook....skiemotorsports build pictures of this year's car (S9) although not too many of the drivetrain yet. Right now, the engine is bolted into the chassis, and that's about it. If you scroll down far enough, there are some of S8's build.
  3. Canucks Represent! haha. One of my favourite Canadian classics.
  4. September? Some of us are in school... Not that I think I'll be able to make it out anyhow, as much as I'd like to go. Already got a trip down to Nebraska planned for June, and the two probably couldn't be combined (logistic challenges, apart from the geographical). Moab is definitely a bucket list thing for me though. I'll keep watching this space.
  5. My MJ was out with a broken axle shaft, so didn't make the trip, but I had a blast anyway. Because Saskatchewan, because winter... Because Racecar. This is what I do in my spare time. Mostly we work on building the cars, and don't get out driving them much, especially in the winter, since smooth surfaces aren't all that easy to come by. I should add that I'm a member of my University's Formula SAE team, Huskie Motorsports. We're a not-for-profit student group, mostly engineering students, but we do have a few from other disciplines. Every year, we design, mostly from scratch, and build a racecar, to FSAE specs, and compete against other teams from around the world. We'll be heading to Lincoln, Nebraska for the competition there in June this year.
  6. ^That always confused me. Don't the HMMWV's have onboard air? Or was that just the H1?
  7. That. Maybe it's my first real experience with 4x4, but apart from two instances, one where I was sitting on a stump (result of the truck being faster than I expected the day after I bought it) and the other where I blew apart a 300k mile u-joint, I've never had any issues getting out of where I got into, including parking in a foot and a half of snow in a ditch. I've shoved snow around with my bumper, what have you. No issues. Yesterday, I tugged a Camry out of a parking spot in our lot where it was sitting snowed into a seriously dense drift that formed around and under the front end. Four guys couldn't even budge it. My MJ's first "real" work under my ownership, and it handled it like a champ. 4lo reverse at almost a 90 degree angle (parking lot constraints) with the wheels cranked, and I barely had to touch the skinny pedal. Yeah, it may look like (and might well be) a pos, but it's my pos. And it earns the love.

    Shoutbox?

it's a chat room thing. Use it for whatever you want. Most of the stuff up there right now is pretty random, but there was a discussion about gears earlier. People have used it to complain about weather, whatever. It's useful if you've got a quick and easy question that doesn't really need a thread to itself (not that anyone would mind if you started one) or you need an answer ten minutes ago. Or just need to rant briefly about something. There's no real set of rules to it. If you've got something you want to say, go ahead.

    Shoutbox?

Shoutbox isn't a search tool, it's more like a chat room. You enter something, click shout, and everyone sees it. Mostly it's used if you have a quick question needing a simple answer. The full thing is on the "shoutbox" tab and there's a smaller version above the main forum page. The search bar is in the upper right hand corner of every page, under where your username is. Not sure I understand your issue?
  10. surprised my swiss cheese exhaust is still on there after all the snow I've dragged it through... New axle shaft put in at 4am... I can drive again! :wrench:
  11. Atmospheric pressure is 14.x psi. To double the power, you need to double the compression, meaning another 14 psi. Without a remap, new cam, etc. 40hp is just about all you'd get out of 8 psi on a 120hp engine. Don't believe me? The Buick 3800 L36 is good for 205hp. The L67 adds a supercharger running at max rpm 7-8 psi, and makes a whopping 270hp. 65 is 31% of 205. 31% of 120 is 38. I'd expect that results for the AMC 2.5 would be more similar to the Buick than to an import. That said, I don't think it's a bad idea, per se. I just wasn't sure you'd put as much thought into it as you could have. As long as you're prepared to do what it takes to get it done properly, it would be pretty badass and very one of a kind.
  12. yes... but to get that much out of it, you need to completely rebuild the thing. You're effectively doubling the output with those numbers. The original internals could support a mild turbo, maybe seven or eight psi at the most (and that's really pushing it), which might net you an extra 30-40hp, but to get 200 at the wheels, you're looking at more like 20psi. Don't expect that to last too long before kaboom.
  13. Yeah, I'm from a rural area, the same thing really. Just about everyone stops to help someone else out. In winter especially, you driving past could mean someone makes it home in a wooden box. Cell service is patchy at best, and on a cold winter night there are very few people out and about... I once drove 70 miles down the busiest highway in the area without seeing a single other car. My truck's not equipped for much pulling, but I'll always stop. Then again, I also pick up hitchikers if I'm alone.
  14. Any chance you could take another with the AMC Jeep badge square in the bottom right hand corner? Otherwise, seriously awesome. Might throw it up as wallpaper on my Toshiba 4300, or at least a cropped to fit version.
  15. :rotfl2: torque steer much?
  16. Wondering that myself. Guessing you can see the timing marks on the harmonic balancer?
  17. No. Copy that second link you've got (the img src one) and paste it into the box that shows up when you click . Should work. Like this: Image Not Found To make it a link, select the picture once you've got it into the text box here, and use the button two to the left of the image button. It looks like three links of chain with a little plus.
  18. You might need to let off the throttle for a second or two if you're trying to disengage 4x4 on the fly. Things bind and don't always let go under load. If you're not moving and want to disengage, you might need to back up a couple feet. Also, clutch or shift the transmission to neutral before shifting to 4lo. If you don't, the tranny will be spinning since the transfer case goes through neutral to get to 4lo, and you'll crunch the gears together in the tc.
  19. :rotfl2:
  20. There's also a difference between pulling someone out and giving them a ride to where they could get help, if they were in a cellular dead spot. Or does that count as picking up a hitchhiker?
  21. I once pulled a dizzy on a Chevy 305, to replace the pickup coil (same thing, pull the drive gear off and all) and somehow when I put it back together, there was no feasible way to put it back in exactly as it was marked. I had turned it to tdc, and I know it could go in either the way it came out or 180° from that, but it would only seat at 45° out of where my marks were... It fired up like that, and I got a mechanic to throw a timing light on it, and it was right where it should be... I would swear to you that tdc moved. As far as finding where tdc is first, no it doesn't matter much, but it can be helpful if things might move while you've got the dizzy out. Or so I'm told, and it makes sense in my head.
  22. Yeah, they only wrecked the nose that every xj's got! Unless they're total losers... oh wait, they are...
  23. My parent's house has an electric furnace, forced air. It doesn't put out quite as much heat as ng or propane would (temperature changes take a while, since it's a pretty big house) but once it's up to temp, it maintains it well, and costs less than gas, although MB Hydro's constantly putting their cost up (I'm old enough to remember it costing about 2/3 what it does now). Wood's just about the only thing that comes cheaper unless you want house insurance... I don't really know what's in my apartment or what it costs, since utilities are included in rent, but it's forced air, and the ducts, vents, and thermostat are in ridiculous places, so it doesn't heat so well.
  24. Well, I've headed your words, and went out and invested in these: I'm hoping to attack my axle sometime this weekend... supposed to be sunny and get as warm(?) as 15°F. Good to know...
  25. That's not cool... wait, nevermind... Last year the furnace in my apartment decided it didn't like it's fan, so it blew it into six or seven pieces. Took three days before the maintenance people came to do something about it (university residence, I can't get into the furnace room). Not fun. Hope you get yours fixed soon!
