Cash for clunkers..................... If you traded in a clunker worth $3500, you get $4500 off for an apparent "savings" of $1000. However, you have to pay taxes on the $4500 come April 15th (something that no auto dealer will tell you). If you are in the 30% tax bracket, you will pay $1350 on that $4500. So, rather than save $1000, you actually pay an extra $350 to the feds. In addition, you traded in a car that was most likely paid for. Now you have 4 or 5 years of payments on a car that you did not need, that was costing you less to run than the payments that you will now be making. But wait, it gets even better: you also got ripped off by the dealer. For example, every dealer here in LA was selling the Ford Focus with all the goodies including A/C, auto transmission, power windows, etc for $12,500 the month before the "cash for clunkers" program started. When "cash for clunkers" came along, they stopped discounting them and instead sold them at the list price of $15,500. So, you paid $3000 more than you would have the month before. (Honda, Toyota , and Kia played the same list price game that Ford and Chevy did). So lets do the final tally here: You traded in a car worth: $3500 You got a discount of: $4500 --------- Net so far +$1000 But you have to pay: $1350 in taxes on the $4500 -------- Net so far: -$350 And you paid: $3000 more than the car was selling for the month before ---------- Net -$3350 We could also add in the additional taxes (sales tax, state tax, etc.) on the extra $3000 that you paid for the car, along with the 5 years of interest on the car loan but lets just stop here. So who actually made out on the deal? The feds collected taxes on the car along with taxes on the $4500 they "gave" you. The car dealers made an extra $3000 or more on every car they sold along with the kickbacks from the manufacturers and the loan companies. The manufacturers got to dump lots of cars they could not give away the month before. And the poor stupid consumer got saddled with even more debt that they cannot afford. Obama and his band of merry men convinced Joe consumer that he was getting $4500 in "free" money from the "government" when in fact Joe was giving away his $3500 car and paying an additional $3350 for the privilege.

I see a couple miss types on my part... :wall: Like I meant to type channel 19 not channel 10 and of coarse I meant 40 channel set not a 30 channel model.    CW

First off, a couple terminology corrections for you guys... In a vehicular mounted antenna, a "whip" has a 1/4 wave 102" mast. Generally it is not needed to be tuned. BUT, not the best idea for a wheeler as it whips everywhere and can hurt people standing beside observing. Also it hits everything above your vehicle on the trail. All shorter antenna masts are sticks and must be loaded. Either with wire wrapped around there length or with a "coil" in the mast. This is to make up for the length being less than 102". SWR, can be set for any one channel, BUT NOT FOR ALL, at least not SPECIFICALLY. Its generally set at channel 19. This is done for two reasons, its also the reason channel "10" is a popular one with on road vehicles. Channel 19 is almost centered in a 30channel set. So setting SWR for here gives you the best SWR for all 40 channels. If you had a need for one certain channel and didn't much care about the rest, you could set the SWR for that channel. But the farthest channel form that channel, will be the worst for SWR. 1:1 is the best you can achieve is a perfect world. 1:2 or 1:3 are more of a commonality. Ground planes are also something that is very important in a CB antenna setup. This is partially why antennas like the "K40 mag mount" are so popular. They sit on the middle of the trunk or roof lid. Both a good sized, flat metal surface, making a good ground plane. Do not "coil" extra antenna wire in the vehicle. Cut to proper length or run it around inside to "use up" the extra distance. Just do not make a closed loop with it. Here is some tips from Radioshack I found with a quick search on GOOGLE: http://support.radioshack.com/support_t ... dio03A.htm Hope this helps, CW

88 dana 44 disc brake conversion (HELP)
CWLONGSHOT replied to misterroadman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
HELLO JEFF!! One thing I forgot to mention to you, the WJ's have a 5on5 bolt pattern. So the swap is more involved if you choose one of these. Your axle in your D44 is 5on4.5 and IIRC the AL44 axle shafts is/are different enough that it won't work. (IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY) Now I have a couple D44 axle seal plates in the garage (as well as one complete axle in my MJ. AND a 8.8 in my TJ, so I can crawl under with a tape and measure... tomorrow.... :D Hopefully one of the guys here will have a for certain answer for you tonight or before I get out there aft work Wednesday... The Sweetness of Married Life The newlyweds were only married two weeks, when the husband said to the wife, 'Honey I'm going to Hank's Tavern to have a beer, I'll be right back'. 'Where are you going, Coochy Coo?' asked the wife. 'I'm going to the bar, Pretty Face,' he answered. 'I'm going to have a beer...' The wife said, 'You want a beer, my love?' She opened the door to the refrigerator and showed him 25 different kinds of beer, brands from 12 different countries: Germany , Holland , Japan , India , etc. The husband didn't know what to do, and the only thing that he could think of saying was, 'Yes, Lollipop... But at the bar.... You know....they have frozen glasses......... ' He didn't get to finish the sentence, because the wife interrupted him by saying, 'You want a frozen glass, Puppy Face?' She took a huge beer mug out of the freezer, so frozen that she was getting chills just holding it. The husband, looking a bit pale, said, 'Yes, Tootsie Roll, but at the bar they have those hors d'oeuvres that are really delicious.... I won't be long.. I'll be right back. I promise. OK?' 'You want hors d'oeuvres, Poochie Pooh?' She opened the oven and took out 5 dishes of different hors d'oeuvres: chicken wings, pigs in blankets, mushroom caps, and little quiches. 'But my sweet honey..... At the bar... You know there's swearing, dirty words and all that...' 'You want dirty words, Cutie Pie? LISTEN UP, CHICKEN $#!&! SIT YOUR SORRY A$$ DOWN, SHUT THE H3LL UP, DRINK YOUR BEER IN YOUR FROZEN MUG AND EAT YOUR HORS D'OEUVRES RIGHT HERE BECAUSE YOU'RE FREAKIN' MARRIED NOW AND YOUR SORRY A$$ IS SOO NOT GOING TO A DAMNED BAR! THAT $#!& IS OVER! GOT IT, DUMBA$$?' And they lived happily ever after. Isn't that a sweet story? MARRIED LIFE ............... MAKES MY EYES TEAR UP!!!

Personally, Hobart was the cheapest, good welder I could fine. I really like mine, kinda wish I had sprung for the 230V unit, but mine has done everything I have asked of it. Millers and Lincoln's are equally good of not better, but cost more. I would stay with one of these brands... Mine is a Hobart 140 115V. IIRC I paid just under $500 shipped with a cart from Harbour freight tools. CW

Dogs have a great sense of danger !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have you ever heard that a dog "knows" when an earthquake is about to hit? Have you ever heard that a dog can "sense" when a tornado is stirring up, even 20 miles away? Do you remember hearing that before the December tsunami struck Southeast Asia, dogs started running frantically away from the seashore,at breakneck speed? Do you know that dogs can detect cancer and other serious illnesses and danger of fire? Somehow they always know when they can 'go for a ride' before you even ask and how do those dogs and cats get home from hundreds of miles away? I'm a firm believer that animals - and especially dogs - have keen insights into the Truth. And you can't tell me that dogs can't sense a potentially terrible disaster well in advance. Simply said, a dog just KNOWS when something isn't right...when impending doom is upon us...they'll always try to warn us!! We should have trusted our dogs. . . . . . . . . . . Wait for it... . . . . . . . . . . Its coming... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Image Not Found

:smart: :rotf: At least you admit it.   Yup, it was kinda OK for a time, but during that wheeling trip we had a couple deep water crossings.. thoroughly dunking the horn.. It REALLY sounded sick for a couple days after that!! LOL You told me it was junk, you where correct!!! :bow down: :bow down: The new one is better, but still not quite what I really would like... Thinking of trying a "bull horn"... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AutoLoc- ... ioQ5fVideo I had some bids on a "hee haw" donkey horn but last as I couldn't get back to the auction before it ended.. THAT would have been funny sheit!!! CW

CWLONGSHOT replied to freakjeep93's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Why didn't you clean the steel first? You asked us for pointers. You asked me in BOTH PM and this post. ALL who know or even those who think that they know have suggested you CLEAN THE STEEL before welding! You repeatedly said you understand and that you will...next time. You mention that you know you didn't birds mouth the steel.. but will next time. Well, guess what. Next time has come and gone, you still haven't done any of this. What you fail to realize is that the damage is done. The welding you have done has muscularly changed the steel under the weld. It is now a WEAK SPOT. NOTHING can change this, anything you do now will need to be done to fix your fix... If stressed it WILL BREAK, where you think you have fixed the problems. Mostly, because you haven't taken the advice.. you asked for!! I WANT TO help you, all of us here do, but if you don't or can't follow the simplest of our suggestions, what or how can we possibly help you......... CW -
I would do something between 2,3 and 4. But not go 4x4. If really that nice, keep it garaged in the winter and it will stay nice for a long time to come. You already have a 4x4, just freshen it up. Make useful, sensable mods. In an effort to make a really nice daily driver. I always wanted to build a V8 2WD MJ. This one sounds too nice for this. WHAT EVER YOU CHOOSE, KEEP US POSTED!!!!   CW

interesting.....frame stiffeners
CWLONGSHOT replied to dunl's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looks to me like it would add more "balast" or armour plating than stiff-in-ers.... :D I have seen stiffners that attcah to the front control arm mounting brackets, weld up along the "frame rail" and terminate at the rear spring hanger, again welding in place.... can't seem to find a link to them... I remember reading about the and seeing install in a issue of either JP or 4WD offroad rag... CW -
Gotta love it. -- Conversation overheard on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai . It's too good not to pass along. The conversation went like this... Iranian Air Defense Radar: "Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself." Aircraft: "This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace." Air Defense Radar: "You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!" Aircraft: "This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait!" Air Defense Radar: (no response .... total silence) God bless our troops.

Painting Roll-Bar - Bed-liner?
CWLONGSHOT replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have used that stuff of many different things!! It very closely matches the look and texture of a firearms synthetic stock. Works nice for a textured grip on handles and like already mentioned, its all in the prep. I painted the bed of my MJ a couple years ago and its held up pretty well. It has held up better than I expected... CW -
