Boilermaker Posted April 24, 2025 Posted April 24, 2025 (edited) My MJ has been stripped of paint and is currently in primer. Shop is concerned about the amount of flex in roof. No signs of any previous damage. I know the roof is pretty thin and has some give to it, but is this too much? Thanks in advance roof.mp4 roof.mp4 Edited April 24, 2025 by Boilermaker Edit - can't get rid of video that isn't playing.
ghetdjc320 Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 Oil canning is common on the roofs of MJ’s. You can use map gas and compressed air to reduce it (shrinking the surrounding metal) or, use some dynaplate on the back side. It’s and body panel reinforcer used in subwoofer applications. It will resist oil canning once installed. Or just leave it alone, it’s not critical
89 MJ Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 It’s fairly common, it’s nothing I’d worry too much about.
Boilermaker Posted April 25, 2025 Author Posted April 25, 2025 Thanks for all the responses. The dynaplate is an interesting idea. The plan for inside of the cab is to spray a few layers of lizard skin sound and thermal directly over 2k epoxy. Adding dynaplate to the roof, either above or below the lizard skin is a good option I wasn't previously aware of. Since that amout of flex isnt unusual, I think I'm going to pass on doing anything mechanical like shrinking. Not worth taking the chance of creating a larger problem.
pizzaman09 Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 I had an Oldsmobile that did the same thing. Other than it being very loud in the rain, it never caused an issue. On my MJ, I installed Killmatt across the bottom side of the roof panel, it was definitely an improvement in noise and stopped the drum type noise.
A-man930 Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 Glad to hear this is typical; I've been dreading chasing my tail trying to fix it.
