jimia1
i think i need to replace my rear differential, a couple of months ago my truck started to make a knocking sound from the rear now its so loud i know its gonna go any day now my question is the knocking seems to go away when i press in the clutch and then when i let off the clutch its start banging, any idea what is causing that and will replacing the whole rear fix it, i put it up on jack stands and put my ear right on the rear differential and i could definatly hear the knocking inside.. BLHTAZ
It will have to opened up to determine the exact cause of the noise ad to see what needs to be repalced. Could be as simple as spider gears or as serious as a complete rebuild. The baffling this is that you say it stops/quiets when you push the clutch...that doesn't make a lot of sense to me if it's a rear differential problem. I guess if it's a ring & pinion issue or carrier bearings going bad it could make a difference in sound by taking pressure off of it when you push the clutch, but I have never heard of that before. bhorocks
dude, just pull the diff cover off and look at things in there. if it is hosed you are going to be able tot ell almost immediately if is is that loud. you could have your answer in two minutes. Eagle
How are the u-joints in the rear drive shaft? Disengaging the clutch would remove any loading from the drive shaft ...
JeepcoMJ
I agree, ujoint. pull the diff cover in case. but, the ujoint in my comanche went bad and did that exact same thing.
Pete M
My vote is for bad spider gears. :D But definitely shake and check the driveshaft for slop before popping open the diff cover.
