EUREKA
I think I recall hearing somewhere that only the steel wheels are able to safely handle the metric ton payload. Is this true or can i run a set of alloy wheels?
Pete M
it is true that Jeep put steelies under the MTs, but I've seen plenty of guys overload their MJs over the years and haven't yet heard of someone hurting their alloys.

I am one of these people. I've very much overloaded my Comanche many times on both sets of alloy wheels I have with no issues as a result. I have a set of Eliminator wheels , which are quite beefy, and a set of late 90s Cherokee 5 spoke wheels.

jpnjake
I may or may not have loaded 3000 lbs of bricks in The bed of my MJ with metric ton springs+ d44 earlier this year on alloy replica wheels (chrome TJ Ravine) Took it like a champ, even after we unloaded and did it again 20 minutes later Also lots of towing on them no problem, last trip was over 4000 lbs with both the bed and trailer weight

pizzaman09
Not metric ton but I do have a D44. The trailer in this photo has 93 tires of mostly large SUV sizes. We estimated the weight between 5-6k lbs trailer and load. We also put about 1k in the bed.
gogmorgo
My google-fu is failing me. I’ve been trying to find the GAWR for the D44a in the ZJ. My best guess that would be the upper limit of what a 15” 5x4.5 Jeep alloy from the time frame would be rated for, if you’re wanting an actual number. With factors of safety considered I’m sure it’s not going to cause problems to exceed ratings on occasion, but that doesn’t exactly make it a good idea to get into a habit of it. My uncle will work on this Comanche once we clear a space in the garage this week. The rotors and centerline wheels for the F150 arrived so we can take her in by tomorrow.
