mjeff87
For some reason, AX-15's have always fought with me in installation.....much more than any other transmissions I've ever replaced. You just have to keep wiggling it around until it hits that "sweet spot" and they clunk right into place that last 1/2" or so. Make sure you're keeping it in plane with the engine (which is pointing downward in the rear, not level). It can help to put it into a gear also, then you can spin the output shaft back and forth and get the input splines lined up (lightly grease them up as well). Oh, and clean that flywheel off with some brake cleaner to get all that smudge off of the face before you finally get the tranny attached. No point in ruining all your hard work with a contaminated flywheel.
jeepmjga
My AX clutch kit came with both size pilot bearings when I ordered. So that other is just the size you aren't using. Also the tip about being able to spin the shafts to align the splines is a huge help when lining up the trans. What kind of jack are you using? If you did CAD delete on your d30 there is a good write up in the DIY section (its the budget garage writeup) to change that vacuum switch to an actual electric switch so your 4wd lights will still work. scaleless
92 used the larger pilot bearing. The pilot is larger (3/4") and so is the bearing. It will not fit into pre-92 crankshafts. You need a special pilot bushing from Novak, available here: https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/pilot-bushings/amc-ax15 It's the last one. Edit: this should be the same one that @jdog mentioned, I missed that. They swapped to 3/4" pilot for the 92 model year. I replaced the vacuum connector on the output of the Tcase with this to keep my 4WD light: https://www.quadratec.com/products/52247_01.htm But your new case doesn't Have that hole. Is it a 231J or what?
Jesse J
a little confused as to what scaless is talking about. some clarification 1. clutch kit for a 92 cheroke 2. came with 2 pilot bearings one has an od of 1.001 and an id that fits on the end of my ax 15 and the second one has a larger od but a considerably smaller id that won't even begin to fit on the input shaft. 3. no cad delete instead I am putting a wagoneer d44 in the front so no more cad so I don't have to use that vac harness
Jeep Driver
32 minutes ago, Jesse J said: a little confused as to what scaless is talking about Taken from elsewhere- The bottom left is a 95, the bottom right is a 91, and the top gold is a Grand Wagonner, which has the outside diameter of the 91, and inside diameter of the 95, so that is the part you will need in the event of a swap, if the tranny shaft diameters differ from one another. I ordered a 70'something CJ pilot bushing for my AX15 swap. Worked perfectly.

Jesse J
Grade 2 was all they had I assumed it’s fine it’s not like it’s under a hole lot of force
Pete M
grade 2 is weak crap you can snap by torquing it down. grade 8 or nothing. find a better hardware store.
scaleless
Haha, grade 5 is sufficient but anything worse is a big no, and 8 is objectively superior.

scaleless
My local hardware store sells fully-threaded grade 5 bolts but not 8. Never seen fully-threaded grade 8s in stores
Pete M
5 is acceptable if 8s are unavailable. you can also order them online.
Jesse J
well I figure torque it down and then so the unthreaded part is the actual alignment should tear the bellhousing up less.
Pete M
not a concern. the bellhousing will be fine. but trying to thread the nut onto the unthreaded part would be a heck of a challenge.
